Conference Shake Up 2.0

Sounds like the CAA may be preparing to invite Coastal Carolina. There's been discussion about them looking towards College of Charleston, Albany and Stony Brook as well. Some have wondered about Liberty, but it sounds like Liberty wants to move up to FBS as well.

CUSA officially adds Charlotte, FIU, LaTech, UNT and UTSA. All schools will begin in 2013 with Charlotte joining in football in 2015. They have to spend two years in FCS before they can move up to FBS. They begin football this coming season.

San Jose State and Utah State officially members of MWC starting in '13.

FSU Athletics at a Crossroads. Sounds like they may be planting the seed to leave the ACC and move to the XII.

And more rumors of Clemson joining Florida State in a move to the XII. If this really goes down, it's going to create another round of chaos for a number of conferences. I'd suspect if this happens, the XII would be looking to move to 14 by adding Louisville and someone else. I used to think it would be Cincy, but that doesn't seem to be a popular thought anymore with others. BYU is still thrown around and I've heard rumblings here and there about Tulane. I've even heard UConn mentioned in the past.

If they do move to 14, and all at once, we could see the BE and ACC poaching from CUSA and others. The way the BE has been, they may add the University of Frankfurt...

What are the odds that the Valley would have the votes to add New Mexico State for everything but football? The WAC is falling apart and they have a respectable basketball program. It'd probably be a long shot but adding them and Milwaukee to the MVC wouldn't be the worst thing ever.

I wouldn't mind NMSU at all, but you better find another non football playing member that is either south and/or west of Wichita to bridge the gap. Then you would have to go with 2 divisions, east and west.

West: Denver OR UTA, NMSU, WSU, MSU, CU, Drake

East: UNI, SIU, ISU, ISU, BU, UE

I wouldn't mind Arlington. But I don't know if the poorer schools would welcome two additions to the SW of Wichita. Although, if you break up into east and west it doesn't effect them as much. And I'm sure you could figure out a schedule where teams like Evansville don't have to travel to both NMSU and UTA (or whoever) in the same season if that'd be a concern.

However, I don't think the gap would be that big a deal to NMSU. I think they'd just be looking for some security and the MVC may be able to provide that.

I'm not sure that NMSU would have much interest in a conference that won't take their FB program too.

We'd take their football if they were going to drop to FCS. There's been some murmuring that the SBC MIGHT take their football, but nothing else. But there's no guarantee they'll take their football even. The Belt has said that they really want to stay within their current footprint and not expand. NMSU is definitely outside of that. Football has no other options if they want to stay FBS. Independent appears to be likely. If that's what they have to do, then I could see them wanting to at least find a home for their other sports.

Personally, I hadn't even considered this idea until I saw a NMSU fan bring it up on another board.

My fear would be that even if they did join, it would be temporary at best. Once they eventually find a home for FB, they'll be gone. Is it worth it?

The A10 is doing it right IMO - carve out a niche of schools that are basketball focused and do not care about having top tier FB for the most part.

In the short term, it may be worth it.

The A10 is doing a great job. The problem is, there aren't a lot of midwest options for the MVC to strengthen the conference. Not like the A10 did with Butler anyway. And if they ever do pull in VCU and/or Mason....

The list of schools that could potentially get us to 12 isn't all that attractive. Would getting to 12 or 14 help us get more bids? Better TV money? Exposure for recruiting? If I were to start with a large list of schools to research and narrow down, it's NMSU, Arlington, Little Rock, ORU, XDSUs, Wright State, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Murray State, Belmont, Denver, UIC and Detroit.

As far as who doesn't play football at all, that'd be Belmont, Detroit, Green Bay, UIC, Little Rock, Milwaukee, ORU and Wright State.

Sadly, I think the answer is no. And I firmly believe that the "flat broke" branch of our conference will fight any expansion that waters down their NCAA tourney share money.

Which is why I'm really starting to dislike this conference. I would love to pair up with you guys and split.
