  • A small ripple but one to watch...

With USU, SJSU going to MWC, UTSA going Conf USA, Texas State or La Tech possibly going Sun Belt will there be a WAC? If not will the Valley have another shot at DBU for baseball?

    One can only hope!

The WAC isn't going away. It will most likely become a non-football conference and stick with Olympic sports only. Now, if Texas State and La. Tech end up in the Sun Belt and UTSA will find itself no worse than the Belt, DBU may decide it needs to change conferences anyway as they'll lose what was the draw of the WAC. UT-Arlington may find itself in the Belt as well as a non-football member, or it could remain in the WAC as it becomes a non-football conference.

I'm not sure CUSA wants La. Tech so they'll probably end up in the Belt. I feel bad for Idaho who is stuck in the West with nowhere to go.

If the MWC/CUSA is a football only merger or whatever you want to call it, we could potentially be attractive to the MWC if they go to 12 or more basketball schools and break into and East/West format. I think I've been over something like that before.

      • Back to the Butler/VCU/GMU to the A10 talk. What happens if Louisville and Cincy go to the B12 and UConn and Rutgers join the SEC/ACC? What does the BE do at that point? Would they then look to focus on basketball and go after some of the Catholic schools? That would more or less gut the A10 would it not? Is it possible that if that happens in the next few years, that Butler would be willing to look to the MVC for a home? Would the BE look at Butler? Would we be able to poach from the A10 or would Dayton, Xavier and SLU all end up in the BE?

Just something to think about I guess....

        • Texas State is now officially going Sunbelt. I would really expect La Tech to push hard to get into SunBelt and NMSU probably will push hard for that as well considering WAC football is dead. Idaho will be dropping down to FCS as they have no where to go but big sky.

Looks like UTA is joining TSU in the sunbelt.

So UTSA, TSU, UTA all leaving the WAC.

Krusty needs to get ahold of Elgin and get DBU back into looking at the Valley ASAP! Then he needs to retire, lol.

            • Idaho is more likely to try Indy. They do NOT want to drop. Same with NMSU as word is the Belt doesn't want to grow their footprint. LaTech desperately wants CUSA and may have a shot. We'll see.

              • News of North Texas to CUSA in '13. Arlington to take their place in the Belt according to Dallas TV station.

Looks like CUSA will officially announce invites on Friday. Looks like UTSA may actually get an invite to CUSA. Sounds like Texas State will go to the Belt.

According to ESPN, Butler is supposed to officially announce today that they'll join the A10 in '13.

Appears that CUSA will be adding Charlotte, ODU, FIU, LaTech and UTSA. LT kind of surprises me. I know they desperately want it but many don't feel that they really bring much to the conference.

                • There are also a lot of rumors or theories behind what the Belt will do. Talk of Georgia Southern and Appy State.

How much power does the Big East have at that point?

With AQ status gone, the Big East in football is meaningless. With Syracuse, Pitt, UConn, Rutgers, Louisville, and Cincy gone ... How much power do they have left in basketball?

At that point the Big East is down to Marquette, Notre Dame, and Georgetown. All three of which are private Catholic universities, the A10 MO. Does the Big East have enough juice without those teams and wihout football to keep rebuilding? Or does the A10 start looking more attractive as a basketball conference, steal those three, and leave the Big East with almost nothing? And of course ND always relies on their football team not going to a conference and taking the basketball team with them ... The BE certainly wouldn't be where the football team would go.

The BE has more name value in basketball, but that seems very reliant on the teams. Without the teams, I don't think they have any power. I would guess it depends on how fast teams are leaving. If they can keep it spread out, they can still project an illusion of power and keep replacing teams. I would also think, though, that the A10 looks far safer as a conference, and it would be in the best interests of those schools to huddle away in a conference focused on basketball over football with other like minded, academic and athletic, schools. The Big East rebuilding every two years can't be the stability those schools are looking for.

Maybe I'm not giving the Big East enough credit for it's name value. I don't think it would take the A10 long at all to take over the BE's place in the basketball world, though.

                      • The big east very well could die into oblivion before too long. There really isn't much left there. The a-10 really could be a power conference soon.

That would seem to work against the Valley making any kind of power move by way of additions. However, even if the BE were able to draw teams from the A10, they'd be likely to, at that point, take the teams we'd want in Butler, Xavier, Dayton and/or SLU.

                            Look on the bright side:

If the A10 raided the Big East into oblivion, maybe we could expand with DePaul!

Nothing like a 4th Illinois team.... At least it would guarantee some exposure in Chicago.

I'd rather have Butler/Xavier/Dayton. Teams that would immediately compete near the top.

I don't want to give into the fact that we're pretty much screwed without a miracle invite to the MWC or the A10. Maybe not now, but in 5-10 years I still think the MVC is going to look different. And not a better different.

                              • George Mason is NOT going to the A10 according to sources inside the athletic department.

If Mason and VCU aren't joining then I think the A10 should turn their focus out west to Creighton and Wichita State...
