So it was no surprise, late Saturday afternoon, when VanVleet spotted Tekele Cotton sprinting behind the Northern Iowa defense (before Northern Iowa spotted Tekele Cotton sprinting behind the Northern Iowa defense) and immediately flung the ball forward, like a quarterback with a receiver benefitting from a breakdown in coverage. VanVleet hit Cotton in stride, basically. There was just one bounce between Cotton and the rim. "And I had a feeling," VanVleet later told me, "that he was gonna do something special."
