Now there's some revisionist history.

That statue wasn't put there because of Lee's service as a commissioned officer of the US Army or for his service in the Mexican-American war. That statue was put there for his service in the army of a group of States who seceded from the United States and Lee's efforts to lead those states in a war AGAINST the United States.

We don't have a lot of statues in public places of generals who have led armies in wars against the United States. Lee is the exception.

According to the author of this piece, if it wasn't for those Democrats who insisted that statue had to come down, this never would have happened. Those white supremacists and neo-nazis were just peacefully pursuing their 1st amendment rights. It was the counter-protesters who caused the riots.

Sounds like the old "they were asking for it" defense.

I agree that removing statues is in no way "erasing history". It's just something for white supremacists to cry over and say they're having their "heritage" taken away from them. Boo hoo.

We protect free speech here, which is great, but it's frightening to me that it seems like these groups are less afraid to show their faces in public these days. They're starting to carve a niche for themselves into society. We can't let this ideology feel welcome.

They have pulled off a clever re-branding in recent years. There are a lot of folks who think the Richard Spencer types simply stand for ethnic pride and celebration of cultural heritage, similar to the surge in popularity of similar groups advocating for minority interests over the last decade or so.

This weekend was a grand slam for them. Commentators like Mr. West are placing them on equal footing with other protest and interest groups. IMO, this apologism is a big mistake. Conservative administrations were admirably forceful in the 80s and 90s when faced with the choice of winking/nodding at leaders like David Duke and allowing them to be part of the coalition versus adamantly disclaiming any association with such groups and refusing to let them in the tent. Reagan and Bush chose the latter unequivocally; the choices of this generation's leadership and many commentators seem to lean a lot more to the wink and nod approach.

I'm not familiar with those groups. Never heard of them until they popped up in this thread.

I think it's pretty easy to condemn advocates of violent protest on all sides of the spectrum while noting that the ideologies of those protestors are not equally repugnant, and that there should be a special disdain for groups that openly advocate for genocide in particular.

Of course I'm against Anarchy. I've actually never heard the term Alt-left and I know very little about AntiFa. Granted AntiFa stands for Anti-Fascist, so I agree with their principle at least. Don't know what else they stand for or anything like that.

But that's just the thing. I don't see the "Alt-left" or anarchists having huge rallies anywhere. They don't have a niche so it's not as scary. Of course there are crazy radicals on both sides, but the Alt-Right Nazis are becoming pretty mainstream. Especially since this past election cycle.
