That statue wasn't put there because of Lee's service as a commissioned officer of the US Army or for his service in the Mexican-American war. That statue was put there for his service in the army of a group of States who seceded from the United States and Lee's efforts to lead those states in a war AGAINST the United States.
We don't have a lot of statues in public places of generals who have led armies in wars against the United States. Lee is the exception.
According to the author of this piece, if it wasn't for those Democrats who insisted that statue had to come down, this never would have happened. Those white supremacists and neo-nazis were just peacefully pursuing their 1st amendment rights. It was the counter-protesters who caused the riots.
Sounds like the old "they were asking for it" defense.
