The only reason he did it was to draw attention to himself, and he did it brilliantly. It cost him NOTHING, he got a TON of publicity for it and he gets to look like the good guy (to the masses) for wanting to give $5 million to a charity, which he'll probably do after Obama doesn't answer (because he cannot, whether it's true or not doesn't matter) anyway.
And which he does every year.
So, what he used to get as just a tax break, now he's going to get a tax break AND more publicity than you, I or any 1000 people combined could possibly dream of buying.
If Donald Trump really wants to give to some charitable organizations, he should just give to them instead of putting conditions on it. His wanting Obama to release his college records, passport, etc should be completely separate from any charitable giving.
And you know what will happen if nothing wrong is found if Obama releases these documents? Probably the same thing that happened when he released his birth certificate. Donald Trump still won't believe it.
I hear ya on the publicity thing, but I think he's also done a lot of damage to his brand with the birther nonsense. Zealously advocating a position that 90+% of America finds ridiculous in exchange for free pub has to bear a heavy cost in terms of enterprise goodwill.
And the likelihood of the records getting released is nil, so the tax break won't be coming anyway.

Why shouldn't he put conditions on it? It's his money to do with whatever he damn well pleases. And by the way, it's about a 99.99999% certainty that Donald has done exactly what you say he should do (give money without conditions), for years, and in amounts far greater than any of us including the President have ever considered. And I'll bet that's exactly what eventually happens here.
Brilliant. If there's nothing to hide Obama should do it and show the world how much he actually cares for charitable causes. If he doesn't do it he obviously has something to hide.
Actually it is pretty funny and potentially could be a distraction for Obama (and if it isn't who cares). If Obama didn't have something to hide why would he not take him up on the offer?
Now had it been the "divorce paper" thing then that would have been lame.

Come on Mr. President, show us how much you care!
If I were President Obama I would take Trump up on his offer but I would negotiate for a bigger charitable contribution. At lease $10 million. Maybe $20 million. Trump said he was open to upping the ante.
Undoubtedly, a portion of the German population during WWII knew fully well what was going on in the concentration camps (inside Germany, like Dachu, located in the town of the same name, 10 miles from Munich) and in the death camps located outside of the country. The exact portion we will never know. But you should keep in mind, not counting the civilian population, a large portion of the German military knew exactly what was taking place.
During the years 1963-66, as a young 1/Lt and Captain, I was stationed as a commander in Western Germany, at Wildflecken Post, Wildflecken,Germany, located 5 K’s from the East German border. And yes, for the vast majority of you who were undoubtedly wondering, some unknown GI during WWII, had many years ago already coined the expression that “There is no Fleckening like x xxxx xxxxxxxx.”
Following are two first hand accounts of stories related to me by three German families and one former German Army officer. Yes, these numbers are very tiny and certainly from a practical standpoint, they are insignificant. All I can say is that they still convinced me that, in general, the German people knew by 1943 what was taking place.
1. My wife and I lived on the German economy for a year in a very nice, eight unit apartment building, in the village of Bruckenau. We became very friendly with three German couples who lived there and socialized frequently with them. On at least two occasions, they brought the subject up concerning the knowledge the German population had concerning the mass murders in the death camps. I came to the conclusion at the time, that many Germans we met had a guilt complex (even though they were not directly involved) and felt the need to apologize. Also, I should mention that JFK had just recently visited Germany and had just made his famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech and the Germans absolutely loved him and Americans in general..
All three couples (who lived in the hinter land and not in the large cities) stated that their parents, relatives, and family friends all knew as early as 1942 about the mass extinctions. But there was absolutely nothing they or anyone could do about it. Their parents were living in a total police state and Hitler was God. Yes, their parents saw neighbors and friends uprooted in the middle of the night and they suspected early on. Then, by 1943, there were ust too many rumors to ignore.
I am not defending them nor condemning their parents. We American have, for 250 years always have had the right to express our opinions and act accordingly, without fear of repercussion against us and our loved ones. This was not their option at the time. Fact is Roosevelt and Churchill knew about this as well and kept it quiet for various and sundry reasons. And some ery debatable.
2. The other situation involved a former Oberstleutnant (LTC) in the German Army I met him at a party and during a discussion he asked me if I knew the major reason Germany lost the war? My answer was that I could think of at least ten reasons, but not just one. He then eplied, “The major reason we lost the war is that I am the only officer you will ever meet who fought against you Americans on the Western Front.” Our friendship grew from there. He stated on a couple of occasions that he knew and most of his fellow officers knew all about the “extermination and the killing camps.” And that the regular German officers hated Hitler and his killers. He was a German officer and could not resign in time of war. His only option as a soldier was to do his very best to try and withhold his and Germany’s honor by his deeds and actions by not killing unarmed or wounded soldiers and treating prisioners with dignity.
