A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many
others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and
was very much in favor of the redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, a
feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had
participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that
her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he
    thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes
on the rich and the addition of more government welfare programs. The
self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the
truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she
    was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and
let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking
a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her
no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even
have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends
because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, "How is your friend Audrey doing?"

She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy
classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so
popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to
all the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes
    because she's too hung over."

Her wise father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's
office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your
friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and
certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired
back, "That wouldn't be fair! I have worked really hard for my grades!
I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next
to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!"

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, "Welcome to the
    Republican party."

Democrats don't believe in making life hard on people who are working hard to achieve success in life, either through excessive taxes or anything else. I'm sorry, but the Republican party is not the party of working people. You can never convince me of that. This is the party that ships your job overseas, gives the ultra-rich huge tax cuts, never raises the minimum wage, and opposes the right of workers to organize.

Given enough time and the proper forum, I could cite much evidence of how Republican policies benefit the rich more than the middle and lower classes, but this isn't the proper forum for that.

And that is exactly why I can't stand the Republicans that we have in power today. There are some more moderate republicans out there, but the far right-wingers are so previlent that no one really knows that not all republicans are that way. But as long as the people like GW are in power, I will never like the Republican party.

The Replican Party "never raises the minimum wage."

Let me first state that I value everyone’s opinion. Much like religion, politics is debatable and each side has valid arguments. I would consider myself somewhere between moderate and far right. Do I believe everything that the Republican Party represents? NO!

I do want to comment about the minimum wage. First, for anyone making minimum wage, it's likely that you probably deserve to be. It's a free market... just ask Mark Turgeon and everyone else who has ever left one job to find a better paying job. If you're not satisfied with your current wage, go out and find a better paying job... believe me, they are out there… it’s that simple. In fact, they should consider abolishing the minimum wage and let the free market determine an employees worth to an organization. Just start a new business today and advertise this message… “We start everyone at minimum wage!” I’m sure they’ll be knocking down your door to apply.

Take a minute to study the Quik Trip (QT) wage philosophy. http://www.quiktrip.com/jobs/wages.asp
They pay considerably more than the current minimum wage... and they hire the very best people. In today’s business environment a company will not survive by paying below market wages.

Oh, and go start a new retail business today and get back with me in 5 years… you’ll be singing a different tune. Sorry, I should have said 3 years… because there’s a 95% chance you won’t be in business for your 4th year.

I’ll end with this short story that occurred several years ago in my business. I hired a gentleman (I'll call him Jimmy) that had went bankrupt and lost his business. After his first 6 months with my company, I gave him a wage increase. He immediately told me that he was disappointed in the increase and said, “When I was in business, I always gave larger wage increases.” I then asked Jimmy why he wasn’t in business any longer and he said,

          Stay with me here…

          Are you ready for this?

          You’re going to like this…

          It’s a classic…

It’s in my all-time business hall of fame file…

          “Well, I went broke!”

          Enough said.
          SFL is back!

You've given me some things to think about SFL. I understand your point about allowing the market to determine wages based on an employee's worth to a business. But I have to say, I think it's too radical of an idea to put in practice. Too many people would be taken advantage of.

Republicans do often oppose minimum wage increases, and Democrats usually favor them. If the market currently dictates starting wages significantly higher than the current minimum wage, what do Republicans fear by raising the minimum?

                  WSF,

Because tomorrow the situation may not and you are never going to go back on the MW.

Everyone should see, first hand, how hard it is to run a business and just keep the doors open, much less turn a profit.

When you, as a business owner, sink everything you own or may own someday in the future including your heart and soul, into a business whose main goal, in all likelyhood, is to make payroll, pay real estate taxes, payroll taxes, income taxes and corporate taxes (not to mention sales taxes) and hope to hell after that there is enough left over to pay the interest on the loan you took out to make payroll, then come to me and tell me how fair it is for someone else to tell you how much to pay your employees.

Now, personally, I don't have a HUGE problem with an increase in the minimum wage as long as it is offset by tax breaks. Remember that the government gets 7.65 cents out of every dollar AND your employer has to DOUBLE that amount to send to the government every payroll.

The democrats want an increase because it is a TAX INCREASE and the more money they control the more power they control.

Silly - individuals must have a certain minimum amount of $ for survival (some form of shelter, food, utilities, and a form of transportation). People making those sorts of wages are pretty desperate or they wouldn't be working in those postiions. Now I dont consider myself a 'bleeding heart liberal' by any means but common sense would indicate that if a person cant make it through work they will choose 'other means' just to survive. This would result in subsisting on government and charity handouts (little or no work and you pay through your taxes) or crime (and once in prison congrats - you now pay for everything).

                        Something else not touched on.......

Everyone likes benefits that come to them, as long as they don't have to pay for it.

If you like the idea of a minimum wage increase then I hope you are willing to pay more for the goods and services at establishments that employee minimum wage workers.

People that like the idea of more income > People that like the idea of more expenses

The minimum wage only benefits those who receive it first, and only for a limited time. It pushes up all wages, costs of goods and inflation until it becomes a wash.

Democrats have no faith in the markets, only faith in themselves to control them. This isn't the early 20th century anymore. If an employer doesn't pay a competitive wage, their competitor will and the cheapskate will be unable to hire quality help and lose business.

The minimum wage should only be a safeguard against collusion among employers to low-ball workers, not a method of collecting more taxes or wealth distribution, which is what it has become.

The low wage jobs might provide enough income for survival if the government wasn't driving up the prices of everything in their attempts to control the markets, raise taxes, spend our country into oblivion and screwing up their monetary policy.
