I think with Duffy it may be that he does have more command with a little less speed on his pitches. It will be interesting to watch as the season winds down if his velocity continues to drop, that is not a good thing. They talked to him after the game on Tuesday and he talked like he was trusting his defense more and maybe not trying to be quite as fine with his pitches. He has sure pitched well since coming off the DL and I will take that.

I think the point of the blog's analysis was to show he may not be pitching any better, but getting luckier with the extreme swing in his BABIP pre/post DL. You might be able to argue that a portion of the change in BABIP could be due to getting a little more movement on his pitches, but that's difficult to qualify without an analysis of pitchEFX data.Originally posted by ShockerDropOut View Post

The only thing about Duffy that makes me feel better is that it seems like when Eiland visits the mound, a simple mechanic adjustment is all it takes to get him back. Was at game, first one this year. Except for being corn cob night it was a great night. The Royals are never out of a game. They scored 3/4 runs in back-2-back innings to stretch the game open. Guth/Hoch couldn't get it done in the middle innings to make it interesting. I love watching Dyson run. He is a catylist. Holland closed out a good come from behind win. On to tomorrow.Comment

Unfortunately, Ned still looks at wins as an indicator. He even commented about it after JGuts last start. "He got the win, didn't he?"

Ventura is weird. Look at a couple recent starts involving the Johnny Cueto factor. The day that Cueto was traded to Kansas City, Ventura pitched a gem against Houston, almost to say, "Hey guys, I can still pitch pretty well." After a couple of mediocre/bad starts, Ventura has to follow up Cueto's complete-game shutout home debut. So of course, Ventura has another outing, showing more signs of being ACE Ventura.
If Cueto keeps pitching well and Ventura finds a way to feed off that and compete with him, the Commisioner's Trophy is coming back to One Royal Way.78-65Comment

Even with all the walks he had last night, I thought the key was that Ventura was missing low. Shox is right though, you never know what pitcher you are going to get from inning to inning. I am happy he battled through it though. I think we need him for the postseason. Let him get this all worked out now while we have a HUGE lead in the division.
Royal, you are right, quality starts is a much better indicator of pitching performance. Wins can be a fickle statistic.Go Shocks!Comment

I'm really hoping that Volquez and Cueto can be the stabilizing force that YV needs to get him grounded. KC is going to need Ventura and Duffy in any of the 7 game series in the playoffs. It was also nice to see that a lineup sans Rios and Omar led to a win. Ned has to be able to see that Rios has no hustle and Omar is a blackhole on offense. That Zobrist error might have him thinking twice about sitting Omar but it needs to happen. No way does Rios make the play that Paulo made in the late innings. It's a much different game if that ball drops and Detroit scores a couple. Oh, and Moose showed some signs yesterday. I can't imagine playing a game when your mother is deathly ill. It has to be wearing on him some. Missing low is definitely preferable. But one think I noticed several times last night (and I admit, I didn't watch closely, but did pick up on some things), there seemed to be a lot of pitches where neither he nor Salvy had any idea where they were going. I don't know if these were all off-speed pitches or what, but the command didn't seem to be there while I was watching. They used to call that "effectively wild".
