    • WSU - NSF director praises 'amazing' applied learning at Wichita State

The director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) visited Wichita State University last week.

The Honorable Sethuraman Panchanathan toured Wichita State’s National Institute for Aviation Research, WSU Tech and the National Center for Aviation Training as a guest of U.S. Senator Jerry Moran.

“I always believe that the real work happens in places like Wichita, and Wichita State is truly an example,” Panchanathan said.

The tours focused on demonstrating how Wichita State partners with industry to educate and train students for the workforce through applied learning.

“Wichita State University is doing amazing things,” Panchanathan said. “When I look at the convergence of what industry needs and what we need to train the next generation of experts, that fusion is right here in action – live - which is phenomenal to watch.”

“For the national security and economic well-being of our nation, we need to make sure that we are investing in science and engineering,” Moran said. “NSF is the primary funder of opportunities to grow that science across the country.”
I don't care if you love, like, hate, or are indifferent about Moran, the guy has been pretty good to Wichita and Wichita State over the years in trying to showcase what both have to offer.

Moran brings home large amounts of pork to the Wichita metro. It's why folks love it on a micro/local level, but hate it on a macro/national level, and why it will never end. It's why we have the fat, bloated omnibus bills that will eventually put the US in the position of being subservient to China.

Pork is “the bridge to nowhere”. Building something like NIAR and leading potential customers to it is not “adding to the political fat and current omnibus bills.”

          • In fact, work being done now at NIAR is going to be instrumental in the US kicking China’s a$$ in the future (figurative and literal translations intended).

            • The most interesting thing about that article to me was the mention of Micron technologies and SpaceX coming to Wichita for tours and being lead around by Moran. Site visits happen all the time, but senator lead site visits by some pretty big names make me salivate on what ifs… anyone know anything about why they were here?

Wichita has had some local involvement with space exploration and is trying to diversify a bit and get a bigger foothold in that area. It allows us to use our aerospace expertise and talent in a different way, and one that isn't likely to fluctuate quite like the business and commercial aviation markets. It's also why you've seen a major push towards military as well.

There are a lot of local companies that could become major suppliers for space exploration.

                  • WSU - Wichita State's $2.4 million NSF award aims to recruit, retain cybersecurity students

In the nation’s ongoing efforts to thwart cyberattacks and scammers, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Wichita State University more than $2.4 million to fund scholarships for the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.

Beginning in fall 2023, the five CyberCorps Scholarships will be awarded to current Wichita State undergraduate and graduate students, as well as incoming transfer students. Recipients will receive funding for tuition, a stipend of $25,000 for undergraduate students and $34,000 for graduate students, as well as money for travel and supplies.

Wichita State’s CyberCorps Scholarship has two aims, said Dr. Sergio Salinas, associate professor at Wichita State’s School of Computing and principal investigator on the project.

“First, the scholarships will support exceptional cybersecurity students, and we hope they will encourage more students, especially those from underrepresented populations, to join our cybersecurity programs,” Salinas said.

Secondly, there is a dire need to expand the cybersecurity workforce in the United States, Kansas and local governments.

“Cybersecurity professionals in government organizations protect the critical infrastructure that supports the country,” Salinas said. “We wanted to help this crucial effort to protect our national security.”

                    • WSU - Treatment for burn wounds could be revolutionized through Wichita State research

Every year, there are roughly 450,000 burn wounds that require clinical care throughout the United States. Of those, more than 3,500 people are fatally injured.

An interdisciplinary team of Wichita State University researchers is working to revolutionize burn-wound care with a scaffolding system that prevents infection and promotes healing.

Dr. Eylem Asmatulu, associate professor of mechanical engineering, recently received a $25,000 grant from KTEC Holdings to develop a “novel three-layered multifunctional bio-scaffolding for localized and fast burn wound treatments.”

“We saw the burn-wound market as a huge growth opportunity, and we can contribute to this with a better product and help people with something that can treat different sizes of burns on any part of the body,” Asmatulu said.

Current commercially available burn treatments include gels, pads and ointments.

“Those are temporary solutions for the burn,” Asmatulu said. “We can produce something that can keep the wound clean, and it has a drug-release mechanism. It will release the drug through the skin and have a patient heal in a quicker, cleaner way.”

For this project, Asmatulu is working with Dr. Shang-You Yang, research associate professor of biology; Dr. Jeremy Patterson, dean of the WSU’s College of Innovation and Design and executive director of Innovation and New Ventures; and Dr. Ahmed Ijaola, who earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering from Wichita State in 2021.
There's a little more detail in the link and it all sounds pretty cool and appears to potentially be a huge upgrade into how burns are currently treated.

                          • Braeburn Square is adding a few more businesses.

Eagle - Three new restaurants and a retail store to open at Wichita State's Braeburn Square

One of the many things the pandemic derailed in Wichita has been progress at Wichita State University’s Braeburn Square, the restaurant and retail development on the school’s Innovation Campus near 21st and Oliver.

“COVID put quite a dent in any . . . new restaurants wanting to open up,” said Tonya Witherspoon, associate vice president for industry engagement and applied learning.

Now, the university is making up for it with the announcement of three new restaurants and a store, which will bring the occupancy of Braeburn Square’s first building to 100%.

The new businesses include Sesame Mediterranean Kitchen, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Two Hands Korean Corn Dogs and the Pedego Wichita electric bike shop.

They join existing tenants Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Social Tap Drinkery, Sungrano Pizza, Wheatly’s, Meritrust Credit Union and the Shocker Store.

The Journey East Asia Grill restaurant at Braeburn Square closed during the pandemic.

“The only reason it seems like all of these are opening up at once is it’s time to finally open up restaurants again,” Witherspoon said. “At the same time . . . we also have some new business partners that have been opening up.”
Didn't realize that both NetApp and AirBus had until recently still been on global orders to work from home. Having those people back on campus should help quite a bit and hopefully lead to more growth at Braeburn as I believe there's still more space to utilize

                            • A pretty cool feature recently opened that could be quite valuable for the students looking for a future in the film/TV industry.

WSU - Shocker Studios sit-com set brings an 'element of Hollywood to Wichita'

The classic sit-com set – think anything from “I Love Lucy” to “Seinfeld” to “The Big Bang Theory” – is now a teaching tool at Wichita State University’s Shocker Studios.

The set, part of a 6,500-square foot film studio, opened this semester and is used by students studying film, cameras, editing, lighting, scene design, writing, acting and sound. Similar to what one might see on a variety of familiar TV shows, the set features a living room, kitchen, dining area, doors and windows with which to create any number of atmospheres.

“This brings an element of Hollywood to Wichita,” said Justin Rorabaugh, director of Shocker Studios. “This is the type of set they build. This isn’t limited to the coasts.”

Actors learn how to perform on the set, technicians learn how to adjust the lighting for time of day and story — all skills that will translate to careers in television work.

“You can get actual practice with lighting,” said Mason Vietti, a senior film major. “We are learning a lot about how to light a scene naturally, killing the overheads and then rebuilding natural lighting from there.”

The set also saves students the hassle of scouting locations suitable for a project.

“You’re able to be creative and come up with cool stories and not have to go find a location,” said senior film major Lainey Caldwell.
