  • Second week highlights include the popular Australian hurdler, Michelle Janneke. Probably need to wake up early to see her compete as she's not expected to advance in the 100 hurdles. Shame.

    • Armand Duplantis, the American born pole vaulter that represents Sweden, just broke the OR in winning the Gold at 6.10.

The clearance was huge and he'll make at least 1 attempt at the WR at 6.25 or 20 feet 6 inches. This guy is different.

There is drama in the 5K as the winner has been DQ'd a half hour after the race. Chaos in women's distance. It could mean a medal for the Italian.

If NBC misses Duplantis live I'm going to lose my ****.

      • Personally, I was hoping for more of Valentina Gottardi of the Italian Beach Volleyball, she is impressive!

        • BOOM!

Duplantis clears on his 3rd attempt! Awesome moment in a packed loud stadium.

20 feet 6 inches. Silver Medalist, Sam Kendricks from the USA, might have been the happiest person other than his family for Duplantis. Kendricks is another American hero.

Phenomenal competition. That's the 9th time he's broken the WR. 2nd most all time behind the great Surgey Bubka.

Why is he competing for Sweden?

His mother is Swedish and a former heptathlete. That enabled him to choose.

                  Why did he choose Sweden?

Mainly because the US doesn’t allow youths under the age of 13 to compete in Pole Vault while Sweden does. Add in that Sweden allowed his dad to Coach him (US doesn’t allow parents as coaches) and it was an easy decision.

The last point isn't true. Jade Carey's dad coached her in gymnastics at the Olympics. He is an Oregon State Assistant Gymnastics Coach

Our country will let a kid switch genders with parental consent but no pole vaulting? JFC, this is brilliant.

I did a little research on this and while your answer isn't wrong, it lacks the complexities of the situation.

                              1. First he's just as much Swedish as American. He's a dual citizen. He was born in America and went to LSU, but he lived in Sweden for a good portion (maybe equal) of his life, and his mother's family still lives there. His grand parents speak Swedish and not English.
                              2. He has competed for Sweden for much of his life. His brother competed for Sweden (it didn't say this but it appears that his brother wasn't good enough to compete for America).
                              3. His girl friend is from Sweden.
                              4. While his father could have coached him for the U.S. Olympic team, his father wasn't offered the job here and in Sweden, he was (a former youth track coach put in the work to recruit his father, brother, and Mondo too.
                              5. It appears that he considered competing for America, but was recruited very hard by a former youth coach in Sweden. The same coach who recruited his father to coach for the Sweden National Team.
                              6. My guess is that Mondo (and his father) isn't really patriotic for America anymore than Sweden. The chances are that he will live his life in Sweden as much as in America.
