You can't believe the near comeback from the Nigerian runner who freaking missed the next to last water jump in the 3000 Steeple qualifying round.
Top 5 qualify, and he's in a group of 8 and certain to qualify (one of the top favorites) and he gets too far inside and MISSES the water jump, has to stop and go back and jump over it from a stop, lands knee deep in the water, then he's at least 30 meters behind and the lead group is into their last lap sprint. This bastard starts winding it up and passes 2 runners by the last water jump but the other 5 in front, he basically caught 4 of them but couldn't pass any of the 4. Finished .14 out of 2nd and only .02 out of qualifying. Gutty as hell, but there was no reason to put himself in that position to start with.....reminds of a women's world 3K recently where the leader missed the water jump turn and had to retreat maybe 40 meters in total to do the jump. Crazy.
Worth the watch if you get a chance. Dude was pumping coming home, and you honestly won't believe he DIDN'T qualify.
He did take a slight bump trying to go inside before he missed the jump and I'm sure they will protest. He'll probably advance.
Edit: The have already decided to advance him to the finals. I don't think the foul was as clear as the officials (and the commentators) did, because he was trying to pass on a thin margin inside, but the Spanish runner did slightly elbow him......IDK. Nobody asked my opinion.
Kenneth Rooks from BYU who looks NOTHING like a long distance runner was very solid and finished 3rd and made the final 16. Congrats to the 24 year old. His heat was by far the slowest of the 3, and a medal would be stunning to say the least, but making the team is a hell of an accomplishment and getting to the final should be viewed as winning, for anyone.Last edited by WuDrWu; August 5, 2024, 02:00 PM.

Gabby Thomas will get 1/10th the media coverage that Sh'C'arr''ie Richardson gets, but she should get 10 times the coverage. You want a role model?
Someone to look up to? Someone to represent your country?
Gabby Thomas.
