KAKE - Major construction coming to Kellogg from K-96 to Andover

Why are we so slow at such projects? I want to say this is about a four mile stretch (I haven't verified that) that I drive on occasion. I drove it yesterday on the way to get groceries after work and it's a real pain in the ass during that time and things get pretty bogged down and chaotic.
It is actually less than 2 miles. The K-96 interchange is east of 127th St. The county line is at 159th, 2 miles +/-. I am assuming that this will not extend any into Andover. It seems like a very long time to complete 2 miles of highway, but it certainly isnt my field of expertise.

    • What I've read has said into Butler County and end just west of Andover. I'm not entirely sure where Andover officially begins but the road name I saw somewhere that they said it would end I'm not familiar with.

Road improvement on 159th (county line) between Central and Kellogg is already underway. 159th from 21st to Central is already completed. I'm pretty sure Andover stops at the county line, however, the Andover school district includes part of Wichita (and us). A small part of the last interchange is in Andover/Butler county. Onewood Dr is along the Andover golf course.

Andover city limits do stop at 159th.

          • EB - The 2022 Asian Night Market was a resounding success for Wichita

The event featured over 40 different vendors selling Asian food, clothing, jewelry and other goods. Many of the who’s who in local Asian food were in attendance such as Pho KC, Himali Eats, Mi No Bakery, Headz & Tailz, and more.

Asian Night Markets are big events that take place across the country, and this was a first for Wichita. It was a great way to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. I stopped by, got my hands on some incredible food and hung out with the estimated 10,000+ people who were in attendance all evening long.
Nice to see an event like this be successful. I think I read something over the weekend that they may need to find a larger area to host this event in the future. Did anyone on the board make it out?

            • EB - What's Happening This Week in Wichita (May 31-June 5)

I may have to try and remember to share this each week. The link has an area for Featured Events, Best Things To Do!, Around The Corner!, Live Music, Performing Arts. Some of those lists include things a few weeks down the road. But all in all, it looks like a nice way to keep up with what's available and going on in the area.

              • KMUW - This summer's Symphony in the Flint Hills planned for Chase County

The 17th annual Symphony in the Flint Hills will take place June 11 in Chase County.

The theme this year is Weather in the Flint Hills and is intended to bring attention to the impact that weather has on the area. Tickets go on sale Saturday.

Kelly Tastove is the operations and donor relations manager for Symphony in the Flint Hills. She said there are a lot of different activities available at the event, in addition to the music.

“My advice is get there early and enjoy the entire day, not only the presentations,” she said. “We have covered wagon rides. We have guided prairie walks. There's just activities to do all day long, right up until that concert time.”

The event will take place at Irma’s Pasture near Bazaar. The location was chosen for the 2019 event but the concert was canceled due to weather.
I hear that this is a great event.

                • Wind Surge hosting school-supply drive for Andover tornado victims (kwch.com)]KWCH - Wind Surge hosting school-supply drive for Andover tornado victims[/url]

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Wichita Wind Surge baseball team will host a school-supply drive beginning Tuesday, with donations earmarked for the students of Andover’s Prairie Creek Elementary School.

During home games between May 31 and the end of August, fans can bring donations to Guest Services, located behind Section 10. Those unable to attend a Wind Surge game may drop off donations at the box office, located on McLean Blvd. Those donating will receive a free berm ticket for a future 2022 regular season Wind Surge game.

“We want to give everyone an opportunity to help the students and teachers at Andover’s Prairie Creek Elementary School in any way they can,” Wind Surge director of fan experience Bob Moulette said. “Donations of pens, paper, folders, and other supplies will go a long way in replacing the items that were lost in the tornado and they will help send the message that we are all one community that supports each another.”
Props to Surge for doing this and being a part of the community.

                  • Here's a little something I missed in regards to Evergy. I'm not sure I get the value of this, but it has apparently been successful in KC so they're opening one here.

WBJ - Evergy opening customer assistance center downtown

The center will provide face-to-face, individualized account support and self-service payment kiosks, among other resources. At the location, customers can also connect with specialists if they need payment assistance or have questions about electric vehicles, renewable energy options or energy-savings tools.

According to customer surveys, Evergy said 87% of those it serves in the Wichita metro area shared that in-person assistance options are important.

The 6,300 square-foot space was recently renovated and Evergy’s facilities team is leading the work to make largely cosmetic updates and to install furniture, the company said. The company did not provide the total cost of the effort.

                    • Out of curiosity, I pulled up the Orpheum upcoming events section. I can only recall one time that I've been, but it's a cool venue. Apparently they show a number of movies. Some are presented by the Tallgrass Film Festival and a few they call their Anniversary Film Series.

The link will show you everything and the following are just things that caught my eye for one reason or another.

Patton Oswalt will be performing June 25th. I've always found him to be a fairly humorous guy.

In the Heat of the Night will play July 14th. I've never seen it, but it's one of those titles I know I've heard mentioned quite a bit.

Casablanca is playing August 18th. Another classic I've yet to see.

Selena will play September 15th. I believe this is the role that kick start J-Lo's career.

The Lost Boys will play October 20th.

Whose Live Anyway? will perform on October 22nd. The cast will include Ryan Styles, Greg Proops and Jeff B. Davis from the hit series Whose Line is it Anyway?

Postmodern Jukebox will perform October 23rd. They are amazing.

Black Jacket Symphony presents Led Zeppelin IV will perform November 11th.

Joe Bonamassa will make his yearly visit November 15th.

My Cousin Vinny will play November 17th.

Miracle on 34th Street will play December 15th.

It looks like the movie nights generally take place on Thursday nights.

I don't know how well the Orpheum generally does for events. I hope things are well attended and would love to see more comedy come through there.

I'm not sure what comedy crowd it would fit as there are a lot of good guys that are beyond playing at a venue as small as the Looney Bin (and one of my favorite comics hates that place and refuses to go back), but maybe aren't quite known enough for a 1200 seat venue. I'd be curious to know how well different acts or types of acts draw there. I do believe the Orpheum is where both Bert Kreishner and Jo Koy performed when they came through town this spring.

                      • I keep forgetting about the slightly smaller Temple Live venue at Wichita Scottish Rite Center that holds around 700. I've seen through FB and such that they seem to host a number of concerts there. I know Dorothy was there in the last few weeks and was a show I wouldn't have minded seeing.

Here's a link to the upcoming shows at Temple Live

Names I recognize are Wheeler Walker Jr. (6/4), Saving Abel (6/15), Static-X (7/18) and Stryper (9/25).

I sometimes forget about smaller venues and this is one that I think is a little newer to this scene, but I could be wrong.

While I'm at it I'll just continue with a few other venues I can think of. Here are the upcoming events at the Cotillion

Of note, Steve Earle and The Dukes (6/9), Tech N9ne (6/10), Aaron Lewis and The Stateliners (7/16), Scarface (7/21), Pop Evil (8/14), Sean Kingston (8/24), Weird Al Yankovic (9/1), Hanson (9/11), Here Come The Mummies (10/7).

I've only ever seen one of these live, but damn those Mummies put on one hell of a show.

I've heard that The Wave is a cool venue that offers an outdoor experience, but I think that they may have an backup option in case of weather.

Brothers Osborne (6/30), Durry (7/15), As I Lay Dying (7/16), The Dead South (8/4), Jamey Johnson (8/18), A Day To Remember (8/20).

Also looks like their beer options focus on local brewers. I want to say most of their food options are locally sourced as well.

Then there's Hartman Arena which has 5k seats and holds around 6500 for concerts. Not much on the agenda there at the moment.

ZZ Top (6/24), The Avett Brothers (7/1) and then Air Capital Bacon, Bourbon & Brews (7/9).

That is all that they have on their agenda currently through the end of the year.

The Brickyard is one I'm not overly familiar with, but they claim to be the premier outdoor music venue in Old Town.

A Band In Kansas (6/3). They have a number of other shows, but I believe they seem to be focused on more local bands, which is great. I just don't know many of them.

Crown Uptown is doing The Addams Family Musical every Friday-Sunday in June. They're also mixing in some fun for the kids with The Three Little Pigs June 9-11 and The Ugly Duckling June 23-25. Those look like 10am start times with The Addams Family shows being at 8pm. The shift to The Wedding Singer in July with some Jack & The Beanstalk for the kiddos.

I've seen people post from Barleycorn's and I've linked the upcoming events. I'm not familiar with any of it.

I'm sure there are other venues that host things. I know a lot of places will have live music as part of their atmosphere, like Mort's.

I admit that I'm not over familiar with Bonamassa, even though I follow him on FB. I know I've heard some of his work in the past. I also know he comes to town at least once a year.

PMJ I listen to more often than I'd like to admit. Just find some of their stuff on YouTube and it's amazing. Some of the artists that they get to come in and perform these re-worked masterpieces is just brilliant. I've become quite the fan of Haley Reinhart because of PMJ. But they're really just a lot of fun either way.

I'm also curious about Black Jacket Symphony. Sounds like they're performing the Led Zeppelin album IV, and then doing their greatest hits. I think the blurb I read said they've done this with 40 or something best selling albums. Has anyone seen them or know more?
