  • Yahoo! - Wichita Riverfest shares our its full list of 2024 musical performers

Friday, May 31: Digital Underground, best known for the hit “The Humpty Dance,” headlines opening night, which will be full of 1990s hit makers: Earlier in the night, C&C Music Factory of “Gonna Make You Sweat” fame will perform, as will Tag Team. best known for the hit “Whoomp! (There It Is.)“

Saturday, June 1: Hunter Hayes, a multi-instrumentalist known for songs like “Wanted” and “I Want Crazy,” will headline, and the bill will also include opening acts Tawna Goforth, a Nashville singer/songwriter who sings “Fixing Cars,” and Red Dirt singer Kyle Kilgore (“Hit It In the Morning.”)

Sunday, June 2: Monterey Jack, a popular local cover band, will headline, and Wichita musician Harrision Steele will open.

Monday, June 3: Gospelfest, the festival’s annual tribute to gospel music, takes the stage on June 3. Festival organizers are still working on the specific lineup of acts.

Tuesday, June 4: Drake White, an Alabama country singer known for songs like “Spark” and “Makin’ Me Look Good Again,” will headline a night of country music that also will include Wichita country band Tequila Ridge.

Wednesday, June 5: Starship featuring Mickey Thomas will headline on Wednesday and will no doubt perform 1980s radio hits like “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” and “We Built this City.” The opening act will be 1970s rockers FogHat, known for the sing “Slow Ride.”

Thursday, June 6: Danielle Nicole, leader of a rock group from Kansas City, Missouri, will headline Thursday’s show. Wichita act Pretend Fried Duo will open.

Friday, June 7: Banda Cuisillos is the headliner of a long list of bands performing as part of the festival’s annual Friday-night Fiesta del Rio. The bill this year also includes Yahari, El Meño y Su Orgullo De Parral, Los De La Sierra and DJ Tino Morales.

Saturday, June 8: Kool & The Gang, a longtime R&B band that had big hits in the 1970s and 1980s , will finish out the festival with songs like “Celebration,” “Jungle Boogie,” “Cherish” and “Get Down On It” and many other iconic hits.
This is a pretty solid lineup.

Digital Underground had a few legit hits.

Tag Team had one massive hit and a couple of decent other tunes. C&C Music Factory much the same.

Hunter Hayes is a legit country star.

Starship is one of those bands I always forget about, but damn they have some bangers.

FogHat is another band I kind of forget about until they come on some station and you realize that they had a few good ones too.

And then there's Kool & The Gang which may be the best way to wrap things up.

Pretty solid lineup and we don't even know who will be performing on Monday yet. They usually get some good ones for Gospelfest.

    • Towne West's problems will likely pale in comparison to the **** show "Killer Mike" and his activism bring to our city.

Might be best if I find somewhere else to be in late June. If you happen to know me, don't come up from behind and surprise me around that time because I'll be carrying.

            • WBJ - Hutton, JE Dunn join forces for Wichita Biomedical Campus build

While dirt has yet to move at the downtown Phase One site of the $300-million Wichita Biomedical Campus, behind the scenes two companies well-versed in local and regional construction have been at work on the project.

Hutton, a Wichita design-build firm, and JE Dunn — headquartered in Kansas City, with offices in Wichita and throughout the country — have formed a joint venture to serve as construction managers on the 8-story, 350,000 square-foot building planned for the southeast corner of Broadway and William.

"We love the opportunity to put a permanent mark on the city like this and to do something that's not done every day," said Alex Breitenbach, leader of JE Dunn Construction's Wichita office.
They should break ground next month.

They still hope that they can begin classes Fall of '26, but think it will more likely be Spring of '27.

They expect a lot of foundation and utility work early on.

350 workers expected at its peak.

JE Dunn has done a lot of work for KU, as Hutton has done a lot for Wichita State. They figured a joint venture made sense. JE Dunn also partnered with Eby Construction to help build Riverfront Stadium.

I'm really curious how much more we'll hear about new buildings or renovations downtown once this actually gets going. We've already seen a handful of buildings purchased and in the process of being renovated because of what is expected. Who knows what downtown will look like by 2030!

I don't hate the event, but it doesn't sound like a winner to me and the downside seems needlessly provoked. And I am completely cognizant of the fact many people like and appreciate genres of music that I don't, and vice versa, as well as types of art etc.

                This from the article:

"This could end up being the biggest musical festival to ever take place in Wichita. The inaugural Elsewhere Festival and Conference will be held in Wichita, Kansas, June 21 and 22, 2024.

Created and produced by Midtopia, a Wichita-based artist and music worker collective striving to build new models for the music industry, both the festival and conference will take an unconventional, inclusive approach to supporting regional arts.

The genre-agnostic festival will feature performances from Killer Mike, Lane 8, Vince Staples, Steve Aoki,
Snow Tha Product, BADBADNOTGOOD, Sudan Archives, and more. Many local Wichita venues will host festival and conference programming throughout the event, with one free stage open to the public. The festival will also include various art experiences, an immersive light and sound stage, and will act as a platform for community-based artists of all kinds."

I read the article. Things like "new model" taking an "unconventional and inclusive approach" sounds very participation trophyish to me. Just because you do it doesn't mean it's good. A bunch of untalented people standing around jerking each other off telling them how great they are isn't my cup of tea. That's why I said I'd stay away.

Also, since it's unlikely I've heard of any of the artists listed, I looked a few up. Sudan Archives actually intrigues me and I will find some of her stuff. Anyone using "tha" in their name isn't worth my time or yours. No idea who Killer Mike was, looked him up and I'd bet anything trouble follows him around. Why be a part of that? If you want to, great. But I'm not picking up the pieces. There are plenty of options for even the clown show genre that is today's hip, hiphop, hiphopanonomous rap, but this seems to be unnecessarily ........IDK....poking the bear?

                • Steve Aoki is probably one of the biggest DJs around right now and is an awesome get for Wichita. He will bring in at least a couple dollars from out of state. I haven’t heard of hardly anyone else on the lineup except for the headliners but if they want to pay a couple big names and then have a bunch of no-name regional acts to fill out the rest I’m completely fine with it. If you view giving a platform to local-ish acts as participation trophyish then I won’t say you’re wrong but I’ll say I don’t see anything wrong with it. One of those acts who is getting a participation trophy is the Shocker Sound Machine.

                  • I don’t live in the area, and even if i did I don’t knowing it’s the type of event I’d attend. However, I read up on it yesterday and I hope the event is successful enough that both the artists and attendees walk away with more positive impression of Wichita than they had before attending. These sorts of things are needed to make Wichita a place young people can see themselves finding work and make a home in Wichita.

                        • WBJ - Defense Department awards Augusta aerospace company share of 5-year, $30M contract

The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded a Wichita-area aerospace manufacturing plant part of a $30 million contract.

D-J Engineering Inc. in Augusta is one of four companies that will manufacture supplies related to EA-18G and P-8A Poseidon Boeing aircraft components for Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane, the Pentagon said.

"Government's become one of our top customers," said Ryan Hernandez, director of marketing and quality at D-J Engineering. "Over the past 10 to 12 years, we really focused on government contracts and working directly with the government."

Much of D-J Engineering's capabilities are geared toward legacy aircraft, which Hernandez said is part of what the government needs.

"If you're looking for a customer that flies a lot of old aircraft, you will not find anyone who flies more than the U.S. military," he said. "They tend to hold on to their old airframes, so they really make a very good customer for us."
Always good to see local companies succeeding.

                          • WBJ - Governor Kelly expected to request millions more for state psychiatric hospital in Wichita

The vision for a 50-bed state psychiatric hospital in Wichita had already included expanding to 100 patient beds with time.

Now, that could happen more quickly — with a higher near-term price tag that could hit nearly $120 million.

As soon as this week, Gov. Laura Kelly is expected to propose a budget amendment to request millions in added funding from the Kansas Legislature, so that the hospital, planned for the northwest corner of Meridian and MacArthur in southwest Wichita, can go straight to 104 beds when construction is expected to begin in early 2025.

State and county officials say this approach will save money over the long-term versus circling back in several years to increase capacity.

"There is a huge cost savings to do that all up front," Sedgwick County assistant manager Tania Cole said in an interview.
There's already $70M in the pot for the hospital with $45M coming from the state. Kelly will be asking for an additional $40-$50M to expand the scope right away rather than wait a few years when costs for such an expansion would likely be a fair amount more.
