The problem is Carl Peterson. 19 years as GM and never a Super Bowl. Pathetic. Carl needs to be fired this year.

Carl has also made a number of good picks. I'm not a huge fan but we could do worse.

But I think that is exactly the problem with Carl. He does just enough to sell tickets and gets by on the fact that you could do worse, but he won't get you a championship.

Just take the Larry Johnson deal. Going into the season, LJ's stock was sky high, and there is no way that a running back, especially one his age, is worth the money that he would be demanding. If Carl had guts to make a winner, he would have dealt LJ, and been able to get multiple players that could have helped the team as well as cap room. Instead, by retaining the "name player" he appeases the fan base and sells jersey's, but doesn't help the team win a championship.

The best teams have always been willing to deal the "name" player if the price of keeping him to too great compared to what he gives the team. New England has done this multiple times. The Colts did it with James before winning a Super Bowl. In the salary cap era, it is necessary to make those calls, but Carl will keep the star at the high price tag, which will just do enough to keep you from absolutely bottoming out and will sell tickets and jerseys.

A number that doesn't include Ryan Sims and Eddie Freeman. I'm glad we took them in the 1st and 2nd rounds of the 2002 draft and passed on the likes of Roy Williams (the SS), John Henderson, Dwight Freeney, Donte Stallworth, Albert Haynesworth, Javon Walker, Ed Reed, Jeremy Shockey Clinton Portis, Brian Westbrook, Deion Branch and Lito Sheppard. (Sorry, I'm still bitter)

Every team has picks they later regret. At the time Sims looked like a great pick and everybody was for it. Hindsight is great sometimes. He's also made great picks like DT, Smith, Gonzo and Shields. Wesley and Woods were good choices. Jared Allen out of nowhere and others.

I'm not a huge Carl fan, I just think too many Chiefs fans look to blame him for everything. The Chiefs have been pretty damn successfuly with him running things. No, we haven't won the Super Bowl, but we've been in the hunt on many occassions. Much of what's wrong with this team now has to do with Dick Vermiel. Yes, Peterson allowed him to make some bad picks but Dick had won a Super Bowl so I could see giving him some room to work. It's hurt us in the long run but I think we'll be fine.

We've got a lot of young guys contributing and showing some ability. Most people I've talked to have been accepting of a couple of bad seasons if we show signs of building to something. I like a lot of the young talent and with Edwards we seem to be drafting better. I never expected us to do well this season. I don't expect us to do a lot next season. I do expect us to be better though.

                3 reasons for the problems:

                1 - Carl Peterson
                2 - Herm Edwards
                3 - About 3/4 of the players

Peterson refuses to actually draft good players consistently.

Herm just needs to be fired, but what can you do with the crappy players that Peterson gets?

See above for explanation of 3.

I turned it on, saw it was 14-0, and figured I might as well do something else.

we will take the better draft pick anyways, because neither the broncos or the chiefs are gonna make the playoffs

Bingo. The term is "rent-a-RB". The Pats and Colts have done this for years on the way to dominating the NFL. Here's how it works: You simply draft a stud RB, keep them on the payroll 3 to 4 seasons-tops, and deal them for future draft picks or veteran players in return (hopefully lineman).

Right now KC needs solid lineman way more than LJ. In the NFL you've got no chance without a solid O-line.

                        I pray for the following:

                        1) KC loses out going 4-12, ending up with top 5 draft pick
                        2) Draft O-lineman
                        3) King Carl is sent off to tend Dick's winery
                        4) Herm joins the broadcast boost
                        5) Bill Cowher has a homecoming of sorts
                        6) LJ has an epic meltdown and forces a trade- ala Kobe Lakers

Sounds like a start to me.

BostonWu I like that scenario! ;) I wonder if there's any chance Cowher would want to come back to KC? That would be awesome, I like Herm but I sure haven't liked what I'm seeing this year and these last few weeks. KC has had some near unwatchable ugly games this year, but they were still in em, yesterday was just horrible. I can't comment past the 2nd half as I didn't watch any of it, but when your only scoring drive is converting 3 4th downs to do it, that's sad.

I'm with everyone on the higher draft pick now, but I wonder if it might end up going for a QB? There are some good ones coming out this year, and I while I know Croyle has had little protection, he just isn't showing me anything to make me believe he's going to be an NFL QB. You can look at lots of young QB's like Manning, Bledsoe, Favre etc. who had bad o-lines but still delivered 300 yd passing games early in their careers. Croyle just doesn't show any consistency, and he seems to be a split second late on all his throws. Maybe with experience he'll learn to unload sooner or maybe that's just how long it takes him to make a read?

I don't know if anyone will take LJ in a trade now but I would be happy to go with Kolby next year and pick up 2-3 good new o-linemen, possibly a QB, definitely a WR, and after yesterday it appears the defense still needs help too. :(
