agreed...i don't think people are taking into account all these girls (in addition to marisah) are all already comfortable with each other. this is much more valuable then some of you obviously think

to me, this is good news, and i, for one, can't wait for the new season to begin - dang summer getting in the way!

I'll think good news when they start signing some of our Kansas girls that are going to Boise State, SMU, Memphis, Missouri, Missouri State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Colorado, Virginia Commonwealth, Sacred Heart University, Northern Arizona, Oral Roberts and others that they didn't even offer. Any coach worth his salt could take 10 girls who left the state who live within 40 miles of WSU the past five years and kick any team the Shockers put on the floor in that time.

Lets start getting some of this talent to stay in house and start winning.

AND I got the same problem with the softball coaching staff. At least the Volleyball team knows where to get some talent and does.

you're going to blame adams for jane's terrible in-state recruiting? i've seen or heard about the staff out at local high school games (cheney, heights, collegiate, etc), but nowadays, you have to start showing interest in these athletes much earlier.

most of the girls you are talking about already had verbals before jody even signed on last march - if she got them to change their verbals to come here you'd probably be griping about her stealing players, huh?

Color me cautiously optimistic and shade that towards the very cautious side.

I think back to this past year's Men's team and to the lack of combined D-1 experience on the roster coming into the year.

Next year's women's team will have a combined 3 years of D-1 basketball experience. That does not preclude success, but it doesn't give one a great deal of confidence either.

Not sure how you predict how this team will perform. It is pretty much an open book with mostly blank pages at this point.

It may take until 3 or 4 games into the conference season next year to get a good feel for what we have with this roster.

I guess I will say it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Perhaps some of these young women want their college experience to include the learning and growth that moving away from home can offer and wouldn't be inclined to stay here unless the program was ranked in the Top 10. I think it's silly to automatically assume it's a failure on either Jane's or Jody's part if they choose to go elsewhere. Jane had a number of Kansas girls--20 out of 31 in the last three years--so I know that it's not that she wouldn't recruit home-state players.

My idea of success? That the girls who are recruited to be Shockers choose to stay once they're here, give it their all, improve with each game, play better as a team than anyone ever would have expected and have a great time doing it. Oh, and are as successful in the classroom and the community as they are on the court.

That may be too lofty a goal for some of you, but if they can do that I really don't care about how many games they win or lose.

Jane refused to even talk to many of the local players. I've heard from reliable sources of talented girls who went elsewhere because the Shocker coaching staff never tried to recruit them.

It was almost like Jane and Turgeon thought the same way by not recruiting those they assumed wouldn't want to be Shockers.

Could not agree more. Very well said.

Not true. Jane and staff did try to recruit some of the locals, but when the players did not return interest, the staff moved on. Now perhaps, the staff didn't start on the players early enough (should go after sophomores at least), the staff did go after local girls.

                      • And as for "reliable sources" saying that Jane didn't even try to recruit local girls, pehaps it was just easier for these girls to say they weren't recruited than to tell hometown fans that they preferred to leave town because of any number of priorities that may have influenced their decision: friends, boyfriend, getting out from under parents' thumbs, desire to live in a bigger, smaller or college town, or, God forbid, because of an academic program that isn't as strong or offered at WSU.

The bottom line: If you don't hear it with your own ears or see it with your own eyes, you don't really know and shouldn't try to pass off second-hand info as fact.

Instead of blaming Jane, Jody, or individual players for a less-than-perfect game or season, wouldn't it be cool if everyone could help get the new season off to a good start by remembering that these young women are collegiate athletes, not pros? And by using this board to support the players who've chosen to play for WSU rather than to berate them?

Yes, they get a college scholarship out of playing, but they also have to give up a lot, too.

                        • This program isn't nothing but rainbows and unicorns so there's going to be negative comments. That's the nature of the beast. Hell, our successful programs get negative comments around here and you want one of the weakest to get a complete pass? Not going to happen.

Believe what you want, but there WERE a number that didn't receive interest from the past staff.

Some didn't get a sniff for one reason or another, most did. I saw quite a few of the coaches recruiting some of these kids as I was back in the day. I ran into Paula on the KS recruiting circuit nearly every weekend.

                            • Based on the article in today's Eagle that 3rd year of eligibility for Morgan Boyd is apparently in question:

A year in question -- WSU recruited Boyd with the belief she had three seasons of eligibility. Now that is in question.

Boyd played two exhibitions and one game at Middle Tennessee State in 2007. She transferred at semester to Arkansas-Fort Smith, a junior college, and sat out the rest of the season with a stress fracture in her right leg. She played the 2008-09 season at the junior college before signing with WSU.

In question is the time at Middle Tennessee State and how that affects her eligibility.

"We're looking into it," WSU associate athletic director Korey Torgerson said.

Whorton and Boyd said they believe she should be awarded a redshirt season for the 2007-08 season because of the injury.

"I can't tell you it's going to happen, but it would be my belief it will," Whorton said.

Whorton is Louis Whorton, Arkansas-Ft. Smith Coach.

                              Stay tuned.

                              • If she indeed had a stress fracture, that would qualify for a medical redshirt.
