So Alex is likely to finish 1st in scoring, 2nd in steals, 3rd in assists, 5th in blocked shots and 7th in rebounding......that's strong.

              Updated Through Sunday, March 1st:

Alex Harden's Combo Scores By Year:
              Freshman - 398/33 games = 12.06 per game (9 starts)
              Sophomore - 780/34 games = 22.94 per game (28 starts)
              Junior - 1,030/33 games = 31.21 per game (33 starts)
              Senior - 818/27 games = 30.30 per game (27 starts) and counting
              Career - 3,026/127 games = 23.83 per game (96 starts) and counting

Alex Harden's Career Totals by Category (Current Rank in Shocker Record Books):
              Points - 1,593 (#2)
              Rebounds - 646 (#10)
              Assists - 424 (#3)
              Steals - 255 (#2)
              Blocks - 108 (#5)
              Combined Total = 3,026 (#1)
              Games Played - 127 (#6)
              Average Combo Score/Game - 23.83 (#5)

              Games Won - 93 (#2)

Kelsey Jacobs has played in 124 of the 128 games that past 4 seasons plus she played in 9 games her true Freshman year before going down with season ending stress fracture and getting a medical redshirt. Kelsey only played about 7 minutes a game in those 9 games but the team was 6-3. By my calculations Kelsey has played in 96 wins as a Lady Shocker which makes her the winningest Lady Shocker in history.)

BTW, Kelsey Jacob's current career Combo Score is 1,545/133 = 11.61 per game.

I was going to post Jamillah Bonner's Combo totals for her 2 years but somebody screwed up the current year Stats on GoShockers.com and they are only reporting stats from conference games. If and when they get that fixed I will post the totals for Jamillah's 2 year career. She had a combo total of 683 last year.

The only one of those that could be a little bit iffy is the 7th in rebounding. She currently has 640 career rebounds and trails #10 Marcy Sudbeck (643) and #9 Michelle Price (652). She should move into 9th place without too much difficulty. Jenny Parr and Kiki Stephens are currently tied from 7th All-Time at 670. If she can grab 31 more rebounds she will move into 7th place as you project.

BTW, congratulations to Alex Harden on becoming the 1st Miss 3,000 in Shocker WBB history.

That is career totals in points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks of 3 grand or more as she now totals 3,003 in her Shocker career.

Wichita State senior Alex Harden is on the verge of becoming the Shockers’ all-time leading scorer and will probably come out on top in any debate of the best player in Shocker women’s basketball history.
Harden is the WSU women’s team version of VanVleet, Baker and Cotton rolled into one. She’s an outstanding scorer, rebounder and passer who wants to win an NCAA Tournament game before her career ends.

I think I pretty much agree with the statements made by Bob Lutz in his article posted above. I have had the same thought that Alex has some of the same traits that Fred, Ron and Tekele exhibit to some extent or another.

The thing is it may almost be happenstance that Alex is where she is today. One way or the other I think she was going to be a very good player. But like Ron she was a very good high school athlete who was flying under the radar screens of the P-5 programs. She was probably more touted as a long jumper and a triple-jumper in high school than as a basketball player.

Jody no doubt knew she had a special athlete on her hands but I am not sure even she would have projected what Alex has become although I don't know that for sure. However, I don't think Alex was really recruited to be become our 5-11 point guard of the future but more likely as a 3.

Two years before Alex joined the program 5-2 Sr. Marisah Henderson was our point guard backed up by promising freshman 5-7 Jessica Diamond. Marisah played 33 minutes a game.

The year before Alex joined the program Jessica became our primary point guard and Jody recruited two more point guards out of Dallas. 5-6 Breanna Dawkins and 5-4 Krystle Henderson. IIRC correctly Breanna was the primary backup to Jessica at the point and Krystle took a redshirt year that year. You don't see a lot of 5-11 players recruited as point guards in women's basketball at least at the Valley's level. Alex is probably the equivalent of 6-5 or 6-6 point guard in the men's game.

The year Alex joined the program in 2011 Jessica, now a junior, was still the primary point guard backed up by Krystle. Breanna had left the program after her freshman year. Alex was listed as a G/F at 5-11. She was not one of those players like Hall of Famer Angela Buckner who walked right into a well defined starting role. Alex averaged 18.7 minutes per game and only started 9 games later in the year. I'm not sure Alex played any point guard that year but she might have played a little. She was 6th on that team in assists and 5th in scoring.

Krystle Henderson left the program after the 2011-12 season and Jody basically had 2 options at point guard for the 2012-13 season. 5-7 Sr. Jessica Diamond and 5-9 Sr. Jasmine Jones a juco transfer the year before. Jessica was really more comfortable as a 2 guard and Jasmine also was not a natural point guard. Out of necessity Jody began experimenting with Alex at the point and BINGO, she hit the jackpot. Alex worked her way into the starting lineup about 7 games into the season. She ended up leading that team in scoring (11.7 PPG edging out Jessica), rebounding (5.0 RPG), assists (5.0 APG) and steals (1.6 SPG) and tied Kelsey Jacobs for the lead in blocked shots. Her only negative was her turnovers (2.9 TPG) However, it now became clear that Jody had a special talent on her hands who would be a match-up nightmare. Alex was a great, not good, a great defender who at 5-11 could stay in front of the quickest of guards and she was strong enough to guard any post player in the Valley if need be. Not only that be she was one smart, high BBIQ player. A star was born.

There has been no doubt who the leader of this Shocker team has been the last two years and Alex has averaged more than 30 combined points, rebound, assists, steals and blocks her Junior and Senior years. She is a two-time MVC Defensive Player of the Year and she should win that again. She was the MVC Player of the Year last year except that the Valley voters inexplicable did not award that honor to Alex. I guess they thought another Defensive POY was good enough. She should win both those award this year although I'm not holding my breath on that happening.

She has led the Shockers to their only 3 MVC regular season championships, their only 2 MVC Tournament championships (with a possible 3rd in a couple of weeks) and to their only 2 NCAA appearances with a possible 3rd his year.

Alex is not a perfect player. She is not a great long-range shooter, but she has a mid-range and slashing game that is as good as it gets. Outstanding passer. Outstanding defender. Solid rebounder. High BBIQ and great leader. My only other complaint about Alex is that at times she may be to unselfish (if that can really be anything to complain about).

So I'm left to wonder what kind of career would Alex have had if Breanna Dawkins and Krystle Henderson had stayed around and filled the point guard spot at WSU during Alex's career. I am sure she would have had a very nice career. But one that has us talking Alex up as the GOAT Shocker WBB player? Maybe, but very possibly not.

And if there was any doubt, yes I am a huge Alex Harden fan.

I have been watching women's basketball for decades in person, Cheryl Miller, Ann Meyers, on and on up to the present. Alex is one of the best players in the country. What she needs to do in tight or sluggish games is take the game over and score 25 to 30. Yes she is too unselfish at the times we need her to take over. The only reason she was not POY last year and could be snubbed this year is other coaches opinions of our Coach. I think most coaches either respect Jody or can't stand her and unfortunately that has impacted the coaches whose vote is weighted greater than the other voters and unfortunately hurts the players. Just my opinion based on what I've heard from some assistant coaches I know in the Valley. Not fact, just a hunch. I have heard the opinion that voters base votes on stats, mostly scoring, but I stick to my opinion. Alex is one of the best I have ever seen.

I would not be at all surprised if personality conflicts come into play in the voting. Jody is not a warm and cuddly little lady that's for sure and I doubt the she ever will be. Not in her DNA.

I noticed the stat problem as well. An old guy like me gets pleasure from simple little things like comparing basketball stats, so I enjoy 1972's reports. Hopefully someone will figure this out on Goshockers.com. I wouldn't even know who to contact in the department.

I e-mailed Marta Warren, Administrative Assistant for Women's Basketball about this today. If you ever need to contact anyone in the athletic department their is a staff directory at GoShockers.com.
