The RPI for October 1 is out. (But not this week's AVCA poll - not yet.)

The Shockers are at #23 with SMU the next AAC team at #77.

Northern Iowa is the top team in the Valley at #38 with Missouri State at #60.

I see the Shockers' travel partner Memphis is at the bottom of the AAC in RPI at #260. Pretty much the opposite of Shockers' situation in the Valley where they were paired with Missouri State. AAC teams have a much different scenario to prepare for when the WSU-Memphis combo is on their schedule than Valley teams had in trying to deal with both the Shocks and the Bears.

The Projected RPI Project has Shockers at #20 at year-end. Their opponents have a projected W/L% of 65.0.

Of interest, Northern Iowa is projected at #38 and Missouri State at #46. It appears that the Bears need to win the Valley Tournament (it's close) to make the NCAAs. The tournament is hosted by Illinois State.

Honest question. How does it work that Northern Iowa is projected at 38, Shox at 20 but they are ranked 3 spots ahead of WSU?

The poll is the opinion of a collection of coaches. Who knows the criteria they use? Northern Iowa has a big win over Nebraska, currently ranked 4, and a bad loss to UMKC. They have other nice wins over 15 Southern Cal and 20 Iowa State. They have a good loss to 12 Creighton - and a bad loss to UMKC (1-3! no less). So you put that in a pot and stir it and have the opinion that the Panthers are the 21st best team in the country.

The RPI Projections are based upon a formula for calculation of the RPI and upon a probablity-based projection of the end-of-season records for all of the teams. Those projected records are the inputs to the formula to calculate a projected RPI at the end of the season.

RPI is what is important. That is what will get you in the NCAA Tournament or leave you out if you are borderline.

Got it. Thanks for taking the time to explain!

For the insanely curious - or maybe insanely bored:

There is talk on the VT board about Cal Poly getting no respect - they beat Wichita State but continue to be ranked behind them.

The coach for Cal Poly is one of the voters. The first week of the poll, he had his team at 23 and the Shockers at 25. By the third week (after the weekend when Cal Poly beat the Shocks), he had his team at 23 and the Shockers out of the poll. Since then on his ballot, the Shocks have yet to make a reappearance and his Mustangs have crept up to 18. There is at least one voter who is giving them some respect. :)

And I am sure this is a completely unbiased evaluation on his part.

Well, I have about 12 hours of flying pipeline today so stuff like this helps pass the time. Hell, I'll take even more! Lol

In this week's AVCA poll, the Shockers are #22, up two spots from last week. Their RPI is now 20, and their Pablo ranking is 26.

The next highest AAC RPI is SMU at 72.

Northern Iowa moved up a spot to #20 in the AVCA Poll. They have an RPI of 44 with Missouri State at 57.

The Projected RPI, the most useful of all of these numbers, is yet to come.

Who is this Pablo guy and why does he not have our beloved Shockers in the top 25? Not sure I like him very much!
