Some freshmen are going to be hard to keep off the field this Spring.

They even use that upside down 2 on a computer graphic.

This was a 10-inning game vs Emporia State. Taylor Selacek homered.

Sydney Zenon had 3 or 4 hits and Erica Schertz was our best pitcher today.

I heard Sydney Z stole home. If so was that on the backend of a double steal? Sounds encouraging regarding the freshman pitcher. Have you seen Chloe Barber pitch?

Yes, it was a well executed play. I’ve only seen Barber pitch an inning or two. Seems like a great overall athlete as she was DP again today.

Every one of the freshmen have a legit chance to be solid contributors this year and 2-3 everyday players.

The Shocks close out their fall season ball games on a bit of a sour note losing both ends of a DH to South Dakota State.

                Game 1. SDS 10 - WSU 1
                Game 2: SDS 6 - WSU 4

SD State is a Top 25 level team who has a very high level pitcher (baffles me why we can’t get one ourselves), so only scoring one run wasn’t that surprising. What was surprising is how our veteran pitchers continue to struggle, namely Howell and Aguilar. Can’t figure it out unless the new pitching coach is taking time to get used to. Schertz was the only one who didn’t allow a run. Barber started the second game and Cooper replaced her and did pretty well. Right now I would have Cooper, Scherz and then everybody else in order.

The freshmen have to play based on what I’ve seen in the fall. I think SS, C, and two of the OF positions are locked up. Sedlacek will fill one of the other positions somewhere. The rest are up for grabs. Seaton, Av Bernard, Zenon and Barber as DP all are outstanding athletes.

Seems to be a position with regular turnover at least for Wichita State softball.

The Director of Operations is often an alumna who sticks around for a couple of years to work on a graduate degree. So, yes, there is a lot of "turnover" in the position.

The big news in that podcast was that both Lauren Lucas and Camryn Compton are taking medical redshirts this year. Not having Lauren on top of Syd the Kid graduating is huge.

Sounds like Addison, Burbs and Taylor will be the starting outfield backed up by 3 freshman, Avery, Sydney Zenon, and Mila Seaton. Both Coach E and Bailey had good things to say about Taylor.

Bailey said that in a home-to-home race this fall that Addy beat Avery.

Regarding newcomers Bailey said grad transfer CC Wong just seems like she never makes an out. Bailey said the pitcher she and her teammates least like to face in scrimmages and hitting against live pitching is freshman Chloe Barber and her 68 mph fastball. Bailey also said Sydney Zenon has made a lot of strides with her hitting this fall.

Coach E had good things to say about CC Wong as well. Said she is one of the better natural hitters she has worked with. She said, although CC is listed at 5-4 on the roster, she is probably closer to 5-1. But despite not having long levers she has surprising power. Between her and Taylor there have been a lot of no doubters leaving the park this fall.

One of the better podcasts Paul Suellentrop has had thanks to Coach E and Burbs.
