After a game at San Diego State on Thursday, the Shockers stay in town over the weekend for the Torero Classic hosted by the University of San Diego.
[Games are on Friday at ?? (The Shocker site says 9 am CT, but that cannot possibly be correct - 7 am PT? no way! - I suspect 11 am CT - I will check on it in the morning) against Utah Tech]
EDIT: No word from the Office. For the time being, I will assume all of the times posted on the site are actually PT with one exception seen below. Times below will be CT.
Games on Friday are against Utah Tech at 11 am and Boise State at 4 pm. The Shockers play Fairleigh Dickinson at 4 pm on Saturday and host USD at 9 pm. Their final game of the tournament is another matchup with Fairleigh Dickinson at noon (although the FD site still says 1 pm) on Sunday.
Utah Tech are a preseason pick for eighth among the fourteen teams in the Western Athletic Conference. Shea Clements and Hannah Hughbanks are members of the preseason Alll-WAC team while Carly Eldredge was a second-team choice. The Trailblazers opened their season in Hawaii where they went 3-2. After the first tournament, Tanya Windle and Lauren Almeida have OPS greater than 1.200. Lauren Garton has an ERA of 0.51 and a WHIP of 0.66, easily the best numbers of the three pitchers who saw action.
Boise State are a narrow pick for first place in the Mountain West Conference. The Broncos opened their season at the UCF Classic where they were 1-4 with three games against ranked teams. One loss was to UCF by 9-8. UCF scored two in the bottom of the seventh after losing a 7-1 lead. Serena Huchingson (1.357) and Eliyah Flores (1.271 with two home runs) were the leading hitters. The three pitchers with the most innings all have a double-digit ERA and a WHIP greater than 2.0.
Fairleigh Dickinson (in Hackensack, NJ - but you already knew that) are members of the Northeast Conference (and you knew that, too). They opened their season in FL with a 3-2 mark at a tournament hosted by the Stetson Hatters. I am not making this stuff up. Courtney Mahoney and Alayna Savaglio were Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively for the NEC. Mahoney has an OPS of 1.059 with Cassidy Triska at 1.021. Of the three primary pitchers used, Savaglio (1.11 and 0.95) and Malori Bell (1.75 and 1.63) have the best numbers.
USD are tabbed for third in the six-team West Coast Conference. Alexia Torculas was named to the Preseason All-WCC team. Their opening weekend was in the LA area with games against Cal(2), Fullerton, and #2 UCLA(2). With that schedule an 0-5 record for the weekend is no great surprise. However, one of the losses to UCLA was on a walk-off home run and the game against Fullerton was a one-run loss. [EDIT: They split a DH against Long Beach State on Wednesday.] Izzy Owen and Arisa Tovar have the best hitting numbers. Nobody has great pitching numbers but Kelsey Tadlock pitched the close game against UCLA [EDIT: and got the win against LBS.]
I will throw the numbers for the Shockers in here after the SDS game and perhaps update the USD info.
