  • Shocker SB at Torero Classic (USD)

After a game at San Diego State on Thursday, the Shockers stay in town over the weekend for the Torero Classic hosted by the University of San Diego.

[Games are on Friday at ?? (The Shocker site says 9 am CT, but that cannot possibly be correct - 7 am PT? no way! - I suspect 11 am CT - I will check on it in the morning) against Utah Tech]

EDIT: No word from the Office. For the time being, I will assume all of the times posted on the site are actually PT with one exception seen below. Times below will be CT.

Games on Friday are against Utah Tech at 11 am and Boise State at 4 pm. The Shockers play Fairleigh Dickinson at 4 pm on Saturday and host USD at 9 pm. Their final game of the tournament is another matchup with Fairleigh Dickinson at noon (although the FD site still says 1 pm) on Sunday.

Utah Tech are a preseason pick for eighth among the fourteen teams in the Western Athletic Conference. Shea Clements and Hannah Hughbanks are members of the preseason Alll-WAC team while Carly Eldredge was a second-team choice. The Trailblazers opened their season in Hawaii where they went 3-2. After the first tournament, Tanya Windle and Lauren Almeida have OPS greater than 1.200. Lauren Garton has an ERA of 0.51 and a WHIP of 0.66, easily the best numbers of the three pitchers who saw action.

Boise State are a narrow pick for first place in the Mountain West Conference. The Broncos opened their season at the UCF Classic where they were 1-4 with three games against ranked teams. One loss was to UCF by 9-8. UCF scored two in the bottom of the seventh after losing a 7-1 lead. Serena Huchingson (1.357) and Eliyah Flores (1.271 with two home runs) were the leading hitters. The three pitchers with the most innings all have a double-digit ERA and a WHIP greater than 2.0.

Fairleigh Dickinson (in Hackensack, NJ - but you already knew that) are members of the Northeast Conference (and you knew that, too). They opened their season in FL with a 3-2 mark at a tournament hosted by the Stetson Hatters. I am not making this stuff up. Courtney Mahoney and Alayna Savaglio were Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively for the NEC. Mahoney has an OPS of 1.059 with Cassidy Triska at 1.021. Of the three primary pitchers used, Savaglio (1.11 and 0.95) and Malori Bell (1.75 and 1.63) have the best numbers.

USD are tabbed for third in the six-team West Coast Conference. Alexia Torculas was named to the Preseason All-WCC team. Their opening weekend was in the LA area with games against Cal(2), Fullerton, and #2 UCLA(2). With that schedule an 0-5 record for the weekend is no great surprise. However, one of the losses to UCLA was on a walk-off home run and the game against Fullerton was a one-run loss. [EDIT: They split a DH against Long Beach State on Wednesday.] Izzy Owen and Arisa Tovar have the best hitting numbers. Nobody has great pitching numbers but Kelsey Tadlock pitched the close game against UCLA [EDIT: and got the win against LBS.]

I will throw the numbers for the Shockers in here after the SDS game and perhaps update the USD info.

The Shocker site has corrected the start times. The start times are all CT and are given above. First game is 11 am on Friday.

Shocker stats update: Sydney and Lauren are the offense. There is a good chance the pitching will be more than adequate.

        Utah Tech v Shockers

I will likely be a few minutes late for the start of this one. So if someone ...

Addie will get going before too long. Just hope it’s sooner than later.

Lauren Howell on the mound. Sami moves up to 6 in the order. Camryn and Bailey get another shot.

Kate Dolinski, their apparent #2, is pitching for Utah Tech.

Lauren gives up a single and walk in the first, but no runs. Sydney has a leadoff infield single but is thrown out trying to advance to second - on a bad throw on the single? Lauren reaches on an error with two outs but Zoe is out to end the inning. No score after one.

USD uses Sidearm for their LiveStats. Once the next game starts, the previous LS are gone (of most interest, the play-by-play) and only available when a school posts the results on their site. Ugh!!

Lauren has two strikeouts in a down-in-order second for the Trailblazers. No runners and two strikeouts in the Shocker second. Still no score.

The bottom four in the order for the Shocks are Sami, Camryn, Lainee, and Bailey.

And Sidearm appears to be dead for the moment. ... And we are back.

Both teams are down in order in the third. No score after three.

Three out in the fourth for Lauren and ten in-a-row. A two-out walk to Zoe ends nine in-a-row for the Shocks. After Lolo is hit by a pitch, Sami delivers a triple to right to give the Shockers the lead. 2-0 after four.

Tech opens the fifth with a triple of their own. Two strikeouts and a fly out follow. 2-0 as we go to the Shocker half of the fifth.

Has there been an earthquake in San Diego or has live stats just stopped? It's been the Top of the 3rd with nothing happening for quite some time

What a lackluster first 4 innings on offense.

Ok, so it was a lackluster three and two-thirds. Sami came up huge!

Good to see some production from the bottom half of the lineup. That 2-run triple by Sami doubled the season RBI total for that part of the lineup.

Lauren has pitched pretty darn well to this point as well. Two hits, one walk and 6 Ks thru 5.

Lainee opens the Shocker fifth with a double and is wild-pitched to third with one out. Unfortunately, neither Sydney or Addison can get her home. 2-0 after five.

A single, two outs and another single in the sixth for the Trailblazers. A pop out ends their half of the sixth. With one out, Zoe doubles and Lolo walks, but no one can push them across. 2-0 after six.

Ground out, strikeout, ground out and the Shocks win.

                          Utah Tech 0-2 Shockers

Lauren throws a four-hit shutout with one walk and seven Ks. The Shockers only had four hits themselves, the two-run triple by Sami being the big one.

Is the character of this team going to be exactly the opposite of expectations when the season started? Led by the pitching rather than the hitting? It is still early.

A win is a win. Nice job by Lauren Howell with little support from the offense in this game.
