Originally posted by WSUwatcher View PostHold on, B&Y -- are you seriously suggesting that most of the guys in big-time prep school basketball programs, or military schools like Hargrave, are there because their families are paying for it? I'm thinking the likelihood of that is somewhere less than slim, on the way to none. There's almost certainly scholarship money involved, and why not? Prep schools are widely unregulated and can do wha they want, so if they can afford to give athletic scholarships and to build regional and national reputations by doing so, what's to stop them?

Why do people keep speculating that EW, with both grandfather and father athletic legacies at WSU, would/should/could quit? That family has committed to WSU big time and I hope all of this speculation is dead wrong. I want to see Evan work his butt off for WSU, finish his four years of eligibility here, train his kid to be a rock star basketball player and ship little Evan Jr to WSU.Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!

At some point, Evan will need to start contributing offensively is he expects to see any playing time. He does okay defensively and is good at getting to loose balls. If any of the new players show just as good defensive skills and hustle for loose balls, but also bring in better offensive skills, who do you think is going to get the playing time.?

Evan is a leader. He may not possess the shooting skills that all-stars posess, but he is extremely valuable to the team. I hope he stays, contributes and contines to lead."I not sure that I've ever been around a more competitive player or young man than Fred VanVleet. I like to win more than 99.9% of the people in this world, but he may top me." -- Gregg Marshall 12/23/13 :peaceful:

I think that a couple of posters on here sell EW short and I agree with those who see his high value. He is a glue guy who has a great attitude and if he is only getting 12-15 minutes a game, he still has a great attitude. Marshall used to say that if I throw a ball out on the court and tell the team to go get it, Evan will get 9-10. This isn't just how good he is on loose balls, it is how he plays and getting important rebounds when the Shocks need a score and miss a shot. He handles the ball well and doesn't get turnovers even under high pressure. He is a very good defensive player, is highly versatile, and can guard quick 6'4 wing guards and 6'7 power forwards. He understands the system on offense and defense, and knows where he is supposed to be at all times. He is another high BBIQ guy. He was a fine shooter two years ago, but this year, he lost his confidence. However, I have no doubt that he'll get this back this year. I hope he stays too.

Shockmonster, I agree with all your points until you got to the reason for Wessel's shooting woes last year.
I don't think he lost confidence, I think the injury to his pinky finger affected his shooting,
Time will see if he can compensate for this, but if he was a good shooter before his injury and a bad one after, I'd say that the problem was the injury.
Either way, I hope he gets his stroke back. If he doesn't and with the talent we can put on the floor this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see his role diminish, as opposed to increasing.
