  • A big strong body is nice but not necessarily the end all and be all of a basketball players ability. Couldn't be much bigger or stronger than EO.

I still value quickness and speed as much as strength as an attribute I like to see in basketball players. If you can have both all the better. The Chatman kid at Creighton is not exactly a behemoth and he has done OK. He is listed at 6-0, 185 although I'm not sure I'm buying that. D-Will is listed at 178 on his 6-2 frame.

We will just have to see with Rian. I think if he can build up to 175 over time he will be OK.

    • Stephan Curry was a pretty small dude at Davidson, he turned out alright.

If Ri'an is a Stephan Curry, he'll have no problem. Dan, not saying Ri'an won't be a very successful player for the Shocks. Sub and I feel that a RS could be of real benefit. Even their local press has Ri'an at 6' 140 lbs. In D-I basketball that 2" shorter and 20 lbs less than Curry is somewhat significant. A RS year could benefit Ri'an in several ways. Just an opinion, not an inditement of his skills and abilities.

            • If ever there was a knock on Clevin Hannah it was that guys could muscle him around because of his size. It took all his craft and savvy to be the successful player he was. 140 in todays game will be a challenge. I agree that a RS year of weights and muscle milk would be warranted.
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

              • for the record, I agree he needs to bulk up, but I'm betting he's got a pretty smooth stoke.

                • No doubt. I think I even referenced at one point the Curry kids as an example of not having to be as strong. But he definitely needs to add 20-30 pounds over time. We play in a physical conference. Not everyone has to be built like Tekele, but a little added bulk wouldn't hurt this kid.

With that said, he's a shooter. Added size would help him take contact when penetrating and help open up his outside game. I worry that he becomes another Ogirri if he doesn't bulk up some and we saw how easy it became to guard Sean.

                  • It's simple. Someone go out and snatch up some photos of his mom, dad, and his siblings. If they're all bean poles, then we've got our answer. If there is some beef in the mix, we got hope.

                    • He is more of a 2 guard, can play the 1 but I would not rely on him at point against a defense that presses (say like Louisville). He is small, don't think he is 6'0 yet, but very quick. As everyone has noted, he has unlimited range, but he also did a great job of driving in and adjusting his shot to not get it blocked. He, and his team, was a lot of fun to watch. They had a 6'9 sophmore too. He's a bit of a project, but he is already built by like a college PF.

                      • 3G on Ri'an

For those of you who are familiar with our recruiting, we signed a young man from North Carolina who’s very similar to Russ Smith in stature. Ri’an Holland. That’s kind of a good comparison physically. I hope Ri’an can play like him. We really are excited about Ri’an. But that’s lofty expectations.

Entire article was great and link was posted in Louisville predictions thread

"I not sure that I've ever been around a more competitive player or young man than Fred VanVleet. I like to win more than 99.9% of the people in this world, but he may top me." -- Gregg Marshall 12/23/13 :peaceful:

A physician called into a radio show and said:

                        • Rian was chosen to the 2013 NCPreps.com 15-member All-state team, and was chosen to the second team of The North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association team. The NCBCA team covered all classes of schools and was a typical five-per-team all-state team (making him a top 10 player in their eyes).

Another recruit mentioned on the board, Oshon West, was named to the NCPreps.com squad as well.
