Shocks are at the Addidas Classic today and tomorrow hosted by Nebraska. Not surprisingly, the Huskers have a top notch indoor track facility.

Not much going on in Nebraska for the Shocks on Friday. However, the Shocks sent a group of distance runners to Washburn to compete in a 5k race and they did pretty well.

In Topeka, Clayton Duchatschek raced a personal-best 14:23.37 in the 5,000 meters to place third and move up to fifth on the WSU all-time list, with Trey Rios finishing behind him in fourth at 14:34.30 and Jackson Caldwell placing eighth at 14:37.86 to both set new personal best and to enter the top-10 list at eight and 10, respectively.

These times are the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fastest times in the AAC so far this indoor season.

Saturday at Nebraska Adam Moore tied the Shocker school record in the indoor mile with a 4:01.51 tying the 1973 hand-timed record of 4:01.5 by Alan Walker. That one has only stood for 48 years.

            .
Davis Dubbert and Brady Palen go 3-4 in the high jump both clearing 6-10.25 to tie with four other Shockers for the 9th spot on the all-time indoor high jump list. That mark is 2nd best in the AAC this season.

RH: Adam Moore Ties Shocker Indoor Mile Record Set in 1973 by Alan Walker

"For me, the whole thing is about breaking four (minutes)," he said. "Nowadays, a really, really good college runner is a sub-four-minute miler."

The oldest individual record in Wichita State men's track and field is from 1973 and it is an event worshipped by runners and running fans. Generations of Shockers set their sights on the indoor mile time of 4 minutes, 1.5 seconds (hand-timed) set by Alan Walker.

"To have a record like that last that long is pretty incredible," Shocker distance coach Kirk Hunter said.

Moore, from Staines-upon-Thames, England, hopes that performance is a one step on the way to breaking four minutes and qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships. He will rest this weekend before running the event next week in Topeka at the Ichabod Mid-Week Challenge. While breaking Walker's record is important, it is also a step toward breaking four minutes and qualifying for the national meet. He expects a time of around 3:57 is necessary.

One of the reasons that Walker's time stood for so long is that it is difficult to find opponents who can push runners to that time. Walker set the record during a strong period of distance running under coach Herm Wilson.

Tanner Brown, a junior, helped by serving as the rabbit for Moore in Lincoln. Moore ran alone for the final 900 meters.

The Shocks hosted the Herm Wilson Invitational at the Heskett Center. Definitely not a major event. Mostly Jucos and a few D-2 and NAIA schools participating. On the men's side I think the only non-WSU athlete competing was one from Nebraska in the heptathlon. I addition, a scaled back Shocker squad participated in this one. With all the juco athletes participating I wonder if this is a much a recruiting event for Coach Rainbolt as anything.

In the heptathlon the Shockers best multi-event athlete, Tanner Brown, was poised to win that event going into the final event, the 1000m run. Unfortunately, Tanner did not finish the race. Not sure if it was due to cramping or some other injury or whether he just hit a wall If Tanner is healthy he is definitley capable of winning an AAC helpathlon championship this year.

The best and most notable performance for the Shocker men was in the weight throw where Michael Bryan launched a season-best 20.94m/68-8.5 to win the event and move up to 25th in the nation. That is about 9 inches shy of Michael's school record, Michael does have the top throw in the AAC this year by about a 4 foot margin.

Otherwise not much of any significance to note.

Adam Moore is now the sole owner of the Wichita State indoor mile record as he clocked a 4:01.08 time at Washburn today breaking the previous record he shared with Alan Walker (1973) that he acheived 8 days ago when he ran a 4:01.51

It will be interesting to see if Adam runs in the Arkansas Qualifer next week. The meet would have the kind of field that could pull and push Adam under 4:00 minutes. The AAC Championships is the following week.

The AAC mile will very competitive. Adam currently sits at 3rd on the AAC 2022 performance chart in the mile. The top 6 guys have times ranging from 3:59.39 to 4:02.79. That will make for a very interesting race.

The Shockers are sending a group of athletes to the Arkansas Qualifier this weekend but with the exception of a handful of athletes for both the men and women combined they are not sending their top athletes to this event. Not too surprising considering the AAC Indoor Championships are the following weekend and you want to make sure your key athletes are well rested.

So will have to wait another week to see if Adam Moore can perhaps break the 4:00 minute barrier in the indoor mile.

As I said not much going on for the Shockers at the Arkansas Qualifier as most of the team focusing on the AAC Championships next weekend.

However, Shocker senior thrower Michael Bryan did compete in the weight throw and broke his own Shocker all-time record with pull of 69-7.5. That puts him back on top of the AAC form charts by 1/2 inch.

AAC Indoor Track & Field Championship - Friday (Feb 25) & Saturday (Feb 26) - Birmingham Crossplex

The AAC did not hold an Indoor T&F Championship last winter due to Covid. The previous year Houston was the men's champion with UConn runnerup. The Shocks finished 5th. UConn has, of course, moved on to the Big East so there are only 7 teams in the AAC who field men's track & field teams.

I do not think the Shocker men nor any of the other AAC teams will challenge Houston again this year. Based on the AAC performance charts were probably final scores something like the following:

                            1. Houston - 190
                            2. Cincinnati - 120
                            3. Tulsa - 100
                            4. Wichita State - 95
                            5. South Florida - 65
                            6. Memphis - 50
                            7. East Carolina - 30

Top 8 finishers in each event score on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 system.

These assume everyone is healthy and performing at or near their season best which, of course, will not be the case.

The main interest for following the Shocks in this meet will be individual performances. The main athletes and events to follow for Shocker fans are as follows:

60 Meters - Tanner Brown has the 4th fastest time in the AAC this season. However, I am not sure if Tanner is totally healthy. If his healthy he will be one of the favorites in the heptathlon. Whether he will run in the open 60 remains to be seen. Plus the difference in times among the Top 10 times in the AAC is only 0.13 of a second. Not much room for error.

200 Meters - Freshman Joakim Genereux charts in as the 8th fastest but several athletes on right behind him.

800 Meters - The Shocks have no one in the Top 8 scoring slots but are in 9th (Josh Cable), 10th (Bryce Merriman), and 11th (Britte Magnuson) on the performance charts so perhaps one of them can squeeze out a scoring performance.

Mile: Shocker senior and WSU record holder is 3rd on the charts in what looks to be a very competitive field. The top 6 runners are only separated by about 3 seconds. I am thinking Adam may have 1 more year of eligibility remaining if he wants it. If not, this might be his final shot a breaking the 4:00 minute mark in the indoor mile. The do not run the mile in collegiate outdoor championships.

5,000 Meters - Clayton Duchatschek slots in at #4 on the charts, Trey Rios is at #5 and Caldwell Jackson at #8. Ben Flowers is 5 seconds behind Jackson at #10.

60m Hurdles - Neither of the Shockers 2 top hurdlers from last year are at the top of their game (depending on what their game is). Antonio Norman transferred to Eastern Illinois and is now perhaps waiting on or serving a jail term (this was discussed earlier in this thread). Joseph Holthusen is running this year but he has been well off his times from last year which indicates he many not be totally healthy. His bet time this year is 8.34 seconds which is 8th best in the AAC. Last year he was consistently under 8 seconds with personal best of 7.74 seconds which would be best in the AAC this season. Shockers also sit in the 9th (Tanner Brown), 10th (Bailey Hudson) and 11th (Chonnor Ludolph) slots in this event as well but Brown and Hudson will be in the heptathlon.

4 x 400 Relay - The Shocks are not a strong 400m squad. The are slotted at 6th out of 7 teams in this event.

Distance Medley Relay - Only 4 AAC teams have a time in this event this year. I assume the Shocks will field a time but have no idea how they might do.

High Jump - Potentially one of the strongest events for the Shocks. The chart in at #2 (Brady Palen and Davis Dubbert both at 6-10.75), #5 (Weston Lewis at 6-8), #6 (Tanner Brown and Chandler Stiawalt both at 6-6.75).

Long Jump - Dowdy Elazarig is at #4 with a jump of 23-7.5 and Freshman Morgan Conner is 6th at 23-1.75. However, those jumps may be a bit of an outlier for both of these guys.

Triple Jump - Dowdy Elazarig is a #7 at 49-3.75.

Shot Put - Dae-Trell Gordon sits at #6 with his best throw of 55-5.5 which came this past weekend.

Weight Throw - Shocker senior and school record holder Michael Bryan sits atop the AAC charts at 69-7.5 that he chucked this past weekend to break his own school records. However, he is only 1/2 inch in front of #2 Robert Watson from Memphis. Would love to see Michael uncork a 70 footer.

Heptathlon - There are only 9 athletes that have posted an heptathlon score this year and 7 are Shockers and 2 are Bearcats. However, some athletes prefer to work on individual events at different meets during the season and the AAC Championships will be their first meet of the year to compete in a full heptathlon. So very hard to know where the Shocks really stand here. Tanner Brown has the top heptathlon score of the season among the limited number of guys that have recorded scores and, if he is healthy he should be one of the favorites. He is followed by 2 Cincinnati athletes. Shocker freshman Hudson Bailey charts in at #4 and is an interesting young athlete to follow.

Best chances for individual event titles are Tanner Brown in the heptathlon (if he is healthy), Michael Bryan in the weight throw, perhaps Adam Moore in the mile but he will probably have go sub-four minutes to do it, and possibly Braden Palen or Davis Dubbert in the high jump if the top ranked high jumper from South Florida stumbles.

The Roundhouse podcast with Assistant Director of Track & Field John Wise. Coach Wise provides a preview of the AAC Indoor Championship this Friday and Saturday and provides much better insights than I ever could. Also talks about how the coming AAC changes will or could impact the Track & Field program. Finished off with a discussion of his Traveling With the Wise Guy youtube videos.

Shockers Ready for AAC Indoor Championships

                                https://goshockers.com/news/2022/2/2...pionships.aspx

On the men's side, Houston is projected to win their third-straight team title as they lead the conference in nine of the 17 events. The Shockers will have to battle for second with Cincinnati and Tulsa. For the women, UCF is projected to win the team title with Cincinnati not far behind, and the Shockers will have to contend with Houston and Tulsa to break into the top three.

"We've got a variety of aches and pains that are causing us difficulty, so ultimately going to the track meet and feeling like the athletes performed well and rose to the occasion for championship track and field is what will make me leave feeling good," Rainbolt said.

In the heptathlon the Shockers have 7 of the 12 entrants. Cincy has 3 and Memphis and ECU have 1 each. Tanner Brown has the highest score this season but I am not sure how healthy he is.

The Shocks have no one competing in the pole vault.

The Shocks have 4 of the 10 entrants in the 60m hurdles. Even if the Shocks run the 4 slowest times they will score 3 points if there guys can just finish. In the past Joeseph Holthusen would be among the favorites but he is battling some kind of injury this year and while he has been competing his times are well off his best times of a year ago.
