It is pretty typical for the list to go down that much in some events. In those events you have athletes who are in the top-48 in multiple events, and they will only focus on trying to make nationals in one event. If a guy is ranked 20th in both the 200 and 400, he'll pick one to conserve energy. In events like the Shot Put, most of the top-48 will declare and it won't go down very low.

The Shocks had two throwers in the Javelin. Davis Dubbert was seeded 39th in the field and threw in the 1st of 3 flights. While Davis was not expected to advance in this event he did manage to outperform his seed significantly finishing 26th with a throw of 204-11.
Baylor freshman Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi, a Nigerian, the #1 seed dominated the event with a throw of 266-6 to win. Shocker Taran Taylor, the #6 seed, had his best throw of 240-11 on his 3rd and final throw that moved him up from 5th after 2 throws to finish in 2nd place and Taran will be joining teammate Michael Bryan in Eugene in two weeks.
Congratulations Taran!Last edited by 1972Shocker; May 26, 2022, 12:49 PM.

Freshman Brady Palen probably represents the Shocks best shot at getting another ticket punched to Eugene.
Brady is the thee 7 seed in the West but I think he will have to jump close to his season best to advance.
The men's high jump is Friday at 2:30pm.
The rest of the Shocks are all long shots to advance but hopefully they will follow Davis Dubbert's performance in the javelin and outperform their seeding.

Adam Moore finished 34th in the 1500m run. His 3:47.72 was about 5 seconds slower than his season best of :3:42.92 but he outperformed his #46 seed. Looks like Adam was stuck in the slowest paced of the 4 heats. In any case, Adam does not advance to Friday's quarterfinals. Adam had a pretty solid season for the Shocks
Joakim Generoux ran a 21.05 in the 200m dash to finish 32nd. Failed to qualify for Friday's quarterfinals but did out perform his #46 seed.Last edited by 1972Shocker; May 25, 2022, 10:46 PM.

RH: Yuben Goncalves Shines In Event He Rarely Practices
"He's explosive and bouncy," assistant coach Heidi Benton said. "He was confident, and I was confident from watching his (jump) practices. A less talented athlete wouldn't be able to do that."
Goncalves, a junior from Portugal, considers himself more a hurdler than a triple jumper. When he returns home this summer, he will hurdle.
However, his versatility and willingness to compete are highlighting his career. On Friday, he will triple jump in the NCAA West Preliminaries in Fayetteville, Ark., after qualifying with his first jump of the outdoor season 12 days earlier.
With that jump of 51-3 ¾, he also finished second in the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship, grabbing crucial points for the Shockers on their way to the men's team title.
Goncalves enters NCAA competition seeded No. 23 in the West and No. 47 nationally with his personal-best of 51-3 ¾ in the conference meet. The top 12, from a field of 48, in the preliminary advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Goncalves focused on the hurdles this spring, in part to protect a sore back from the stresses of practicing the long and triple jumps. In the conference meet, he was ready to help by also finishing fourth in the long jump (24-3/4). He finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.07 seconds.
While he didn't practice jumps often, he did work on technique and watch video.
He totaled 17 points for the Shockers, with his jumps providing points that pre-meet form charts missed. Wichita State finished with 185.5 points to Houston's 179.

Matt Everett, who threw the discuss 184-2 in winning the AAC Championship, could only manage a sling of 172-10 today in the West Preliminaries. He finished 27th which was 6 spots above his #33 seeding. However, if had been able to duplicate is big PR from the AAC Championship he would have finished 7th or 8th and he would have been headed to Eugene. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be but Matt will have a couple more cracks at it and maybe his freshman teammate Ridge Estes will join him next year.

Brady Palen was "only" able to clear 6-10.75 in the high jump but at this level you needed to clear 7' to have a shot. Brady's PB is 7-1.75 which was the best jump today by 7 guys. Like Matt Everett, Brady is a youngster and should get at least a couple more shots.
Davis Dubbert only managed to clear 6-6.75 today well shy of his PB of 7-0.25.
The leaves only Yuben Goncalves, the Shocks I almost never do a triple jump but when I do I end up in the NCAA Preliminary Round triple-jumper, for the Shocker men. That events starts in about an hour. Maybe Yuben can pull another surprise out his backpack of tricks.
Looks like Yuben is in the 3rd flight out of 4 but looks like the have 2 triple-jump pits going. Probably will take about 45 minutes of those first 2 flights to get 3 jumps per athlete in.
Yuben fouled on his 1st attempt.
Yuben jumps 49-6.25 on his 2nd attempt. He needs to find a couple more feet.
Yuben does find another foot as he finishes with a jump of 50-6. Won't be good enough to advance to Eugene.
Looks like Yuben will finish 23rd. Exactly where he was seeded. I wonder if he will focus a bit more on the jumps next year. I guess it depends on how his back feels.Last edited by 1972Shocker; May 27, 2022, 08:53 PM.

So the Shockers are down to 2 athletes still competing as the 2021-22 year comes to a close, Sr. Michael Bryan in the hammer throw and Jr. Taran Taylor in the javelin throw.
Top 8 finishers in each event earn 1st Team All-American honors. The 9th through 16th places earn 2nd Team All-American honors. There are 24 finalists in each event.
Michael's throw of 69.32m/227-5 in the West preliminaries seeds him at #5 among the 24 competitors who made to the finals in Eugene. The #1 seed, Penn State's Tyler Merkley, threw 70.79m/232-3. Michael's career best throw is 70.45m/231-2.
Michael has a puncher's chance at winning this event if he can find that one perfect throw. Most likely it will require a new career best. More realistically a top 8 finish would be a great way for Michael to top of his very interesting and unexpected career as a Shocker.
Michael is a 2 time 2nd Team All-American. He finished 12th in the NCAA last year and he finished 14rth in the indoor weight throw this year.
Taran Taylor is also the #5 seed in the javelin with his 2nd place throw of 73.44m/240-11 in the West preliminaries. However, I think Taran's chances of winning this event are pretty slim as 3 of the 4 guys seeded ahead of him have thrown over 80m/262-6. Taran's career best thow was his freshman year at 74.26m/243-8 and the was before he tore his elbow up requireing surgery. Actually, have Taran get back to throwing close that after his injury is quite impressive. My hope for Taran is that he will be near top form and also earn a top 8 finish. I think Taran has another year of eligibility left if he wants it but he did earn his computer science degree this spring. If he finished top 8 to go along with winning an AAC event and team championship I would be a little surprised if he doesn't decide that's good enough and call it a career.
Both Michael and Taran will compete on Wednesday, June 8th (Day 1). The hammer throw is sheduled for Noon CT and the javelin throw is scheduled for 3:45 pm CT.
Good luck guys!Last edited by 1972Shocker; May 30, 2022, 03:16 PM.

The 2021-22 WSU athletic season comes to a close this afternoon and evening at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships:
Top eight in each event earn First Team All-America honors, while the next eight are named to the Second Team, followed by the final eight earning Honorable Mention.
Michael Bryan | Hammer | Flight 2 – Pos. 3 | 4 p.m. (CT) | ESPNU
Bryan, a two-time All-American, looks to add to his honors after winning the 2022 American Athletic Conference (AAC) Indoor (weight throw) and Outdoor (hammer) Championships and placing third at the NCAA West Preliminaries to enter the competition as the No. 5 seed. His season-best throw of 70.33m/230'9" ranks 12th in the NCAA this year and 21st in the United States. Bryan holds a personal best of 70.45m/231'2", which he achieved in 2021.
Taran Taylor | Javelin | Flight 2 – Pos. 11 | 7:45 (CT) | ESPNU
Taylor makes his NCAA Championship debut in the javelin as the No. 5 seed after placing second at the NCAA West Prelims with his second-farthest throw of the season. His season best came at the AAC Outdoor Championships when he threw 73.93m/242'7" to repeat as the javelin champion. That mark ranks Taylor 11th in the NCAA and 14th in the U.S. this year. Taylor is no stranger to championship competition, winning the 2018 USATF Junior Championships and competing in the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships. Taylor holds a personal best of 74.26m/243'8", which he threw in 2018 at the conference meet.

RH: Shocker Javelin Thrower Seeded 5th in NCAA Championships
"I feel really good about going to Eugene," he said. "Having that sort of ease of mind, I'll be able to go out there with those first three throws and find a groove and get in that right head-space."
NCAA Preliminary Round competitors get three javelin throws to qualify as one of the top 12. As Wichita State's Taran Taylor knows, that's perfect number of tries to make it a mind game.
Watching from the stands, fiancé Sydney Wyatt recognized the body language of an athlete throwing with confidence and determined to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
"It was very cool to watch him go from the second throw, which wasn't very good, and see him calm down, center himself, and then go out and jump back up the scoreboard," Wyatt said. "He hit his best one on his final throw."
Earning All-American honors would provide a fitting end to Taylor's college career. He is a two-time American Athletic Conference javelin champion and ranks second on Wichita State's career list with a throw of 243-7 ½. In 2018, he won the USATF Junior Championships with a throw of 233-2.
Taylor's conference title and NCAA qualifying throw were part of a life-changing May. He packed graduation (with a computer science major), engagement to Wyatt, landing a job in Wichita as a software developer and two major meets into that month.
Taylor's organizational skills and attention to detail fit with the javelin, just as they do in computer science. For their senior design project, Taylor and two classmates designed a body temperature monitor for a grade-school student who suffers from dysautonomia, a disorder of the nervous system. The wearable device would send an alert to a phone or computer if the person's body temperature rose or fell out of normal levels.
