        Men's Heptathlon - Day 1:

60m Dash: As WuDrWu reports Tanner Brown wins the heptathlon with a time of 6.87 seconds. He has run as fast as 6.76 but he was the only heptathlete to break 7 seconds. Freshman Adria Navajon out of Spain was 3rd with a personal best time of 7.11. Shockers also finished 5, 6, 8 and 9 as well. Tanner scored 929 points with that effort putting him up 82 points over 2nd place Cannon Riddle of Cincinnati. A long way to go yet.

Long Jump: Adria wins the long jump with his 2nd PR of the day with a nice jump of 23-3.5 worth 915 points. Tanner Brown was 4th with a jump of 22-5 worth
774 points. Adria moves into 1st place after 2 events with 1,759 points and Tanner is 2nd with 1,703 points. Justin Miller is 3rd with 1.659 points.

Shot Put: Tanner with a heave of 41-0.125 worth 637 points takes the top spot in the shot put and continues to hold on to 1st place with a score of 2,340 points after 3 events. Adria finishes 11th (out of 12 comptetitors) with a put of 36-1.75 good for 547 points. This was the 3rd PR in 3 events for the freshman and he is still sitting in 2nd overall after 3 events with 2,306 points, just 20 points clear of Justin Miller in 3rd place.

High Jump: The Shocks did quite well in the high jump. Adria won the event with a very nice jump of 6-7.5, a new AAC record in the pentathlon high jump and just short of his PB. Tanner Brown was 2nd at 6-5.25 and freshman Bailey Hudson was 3rd at 6-4.

At the end of Day 11 of the heptathlon (4 events) Adria, who appears to be competing in his 1st collegiate heptathlon is leading with 3,128 points and Tanner is 2nd at 3,107 points. Justin Miller from Memphis continues to be in 3rd at 2,947 points followed closely by Cannon Riddle of Cincinnati at 2,931 points. Shocker freshman Hudson Bailey is in 6th (2,850), sophomore Chonnor Ludolph is 8th (2,769) and junior Nate Vann is in 9th (2,617).

The heptathlon finishes up tomorrow with the 60m hurdles, the pole vault and the 1000m run. The pole vault will be the toughest of the 3 events for the Shocks. I don't think Adria has run a 60 hurdles race or a 1000m race in a meet this year. He does have a pretty good vault on his resume. I think the PV and the 1000 will give Hudson Bailey some trouble.

As I previously mentioned the Shocks had 4 of the 10 athletes entered in the 60m hurdles. So at least 2 would qualify for the 8 man finals.

3 of the 4 Shocks have, in fact, qualified for the finals as Adria Navajon, Hudson Bailey and Chonnor Ludolph (2 freshmen and a sophomore) finished 5th, 7th and 8th. Ironically, the only Shocker not to advance to the finals was the Shockers' best hurdler Joseph Holthusen who has not been healthy during this indoor season.

That will guarantee the Shocks at least 6 points in this event as long as our guys can finish the race in the finals.

Shocker senior Michael Bryan broke his own Shocker record in the weight throw by 4.5 feet with a huge throw of 74-1 which is also the new AAC record. Congratulations to Michael. Not sure where that will put Michael nationally but I suspect he will be competing in the NCAA's this year.

In the men's long jump freshman Adria Navajon was 4th and sophomore Dowdy Elazarig was 6th to score 8 points for the Shocks.

Josh Cable qualified for the 8 man final in the 800m run tomorrow.

Freshman Joakim Genereux qualified for the final spot in the 8-man 200m final tomorrow.

Clayton Duchatschek, Ben Flowers and Trey Rios finished 5th, 6th and 7th in a decent showing in the 5k.

The Shocker men closed out the day with a 3rd place finish in the Men's distance medley (which is 1200m, 400m, 800m and 1600m). Bryce Merriman JD Prnsloo, Josh Cable and Adam Moore did the honors for the Shocks.

Bryan Wins Weight Throw, Moves up to No. 6 in the Nation on Day One

"Michael Bryan has had a great season, and I feel like what we saw today has been building for the last few weeks," throws coach John Hetzendorf said. "He has shown glimpses of this in training, and I'm glad he could make it happen today."

Bryan's throw set a new championship and school record, breaking the previous records by over a meter. He also moved from 29th up to No. 6 in the nation in the event.

"His throw is historical in our program and within our conference, and I'm excited to see what he can do at the national meet against some high-level competition," Hetzendorf said. "It appears this national meet may be the deepest field in the weight throw there has ever been."

The men's high jump is in progess. This is an event the Shockers hope to do well in. Romaine Beckford of South Florida, the favorite, and Shocker teammates freshman Brady Palen andjunior Davis Dubbert have all cleared 6-9.75 without a miss. They are the only 3 jumpers left in the competition. Shockers Weston Lewis and Chandler Stiawalt were among 5 guys who cleared 6-8. Lewis will finish 4th and Chandler 8th with the tiebreaker of fewest misses. Shocks will get at least 20 points.

Palen and Beckford are over 6-11. Palen in his 1st attemtp and Beckford on his 2nd attempt. Dubbert failed to clear 6-11 and will finish 3rd.

Pallen, who has tied his PR, and Beckford, who has cleared 7-1 this year, move on to 7-0.25.

Brady clears the 7-0.25 on his 3rd try and sets a new PR. Beckford also clear on his 3rd try. The bar moves to 7-1.5.

Both miss their 1st attempt. Palen misses his 2nd attempt. Beckford clears. Palen misses his final attempt. ..

Beckford, a junior, moves on to clear 7-2.5.

Hell of a job by the Shocker freshman.

                      Heptathlon - Day 2:

60m Hurdles - Shocker freshman Adria Navajon continues to excel in his heptathon debut winning the 60m hurles with a very good time of 8.25 seconds good for 920 points. Shocker sophomore Chonnor Ludolph finished 2nd at 8.45 seconds good for 872 points and Tanner Brown finished 5th at 8.60 good for 836 points. After 5 events Adia sits at 4,048 points and leads teammate Tanner Brown by 76 points.

Pole Vault: This was the event I was kind of holding my breath on but the Shocks held their own for the most part. Adria cleared 14-5.25 good for 731 points putting him at 4,779 points. Tanner cleared 14-1.25 for 702 points and trails Adria by 134 points heading into the 1000m. The next 4 guys, 3 from Cincinnati and 1 from Memphis trail Adria by 266 points, 290 points, 313 points and 375 points.

1000m Run: Adria has not recorded a time in the 1000 this year or in any distnce close to that. So I have no idea what to expect from him. Tanner's PB in the 1000 is 2:40.41 which would score 869 points. In order to overcome Adria's lead Tanner would have to beat him by about 12.6 seconds. Cannon Riddle of Cincinnati who sits in 3rd would have to beat Adria by roughly 30 seconds to overtake him. Tanner may have a shot but not sure about anyone else. A 1-2 finish for the Shocks in the pentathlon would be a very good result.

Tanner followed closely by Adria jump out to an early lead. Tanner wins the 1000 at running 2:40.53 good for 867 points followed by Adria at 2:43.27 for 837 points. No one else was under 2:51. Tanner cruised but Adria had to give it all he had as he collapsed after crossing the finish line and was still a bit wobbly after a couple of minutes.

And the Shocker freshman from Barcelona, Spain if the 2022 AAC Indoor Champion with 5,616 points. Shocker Tanner Brown is the runner-up with 5,512 points. Cincinnati's Cannon Riddle was 3rd 350 points back at 5,266 points.

Kind of feel for Tanner as he broke his previous PR of 5,368 points by 114 points but at least he lost to a fellow Shocker. But what a perfourmance by the Shocker freshman from Spain. BTW is officially listed as Adria Navajon Fabregat on the Shocker Roster Also Adrai did very well in his first post championship win as well giving Tanner a lot of credit for helping him.

Adria's score slots him in at #6 all-time at Wichita State which includes some very good multi-event athletes. Heckuva start to his Shocker career. But with Tanner around another year he will have to keep working hard.

Shockers Chonnor Ludolph, Hudson Bailey and Kolby Caster finished 6th, 7th and 8th as the Shockers picked up 24 points in this event.

In a tactical race Adam Moore clocked 4;04.77 in the mile run good for a 2nd place finish. Both Adam and the winner broke the meet record. Shocker sophomore Bryce Merriman managed to finish 8th to pick up another point for the Shocks.

Shortly after finishing the grueling 1000m run to close out the 7 event heptathlon, Adria Navajon, Chonnor Ludolph and Hudon Bailey received the honor of competing in the 60m hurdle race.

Nice scheduling AAC. Chonnor, Hudson and Adria finished 5th, 6th and 7th which I think is about as good as you could expect considering the circumstances. By compairson Adrai won the pentathlon 60m hurdles this morning running an 8.25 second time. This time he ran a 8.57 which I though was pretty good as he was totally gassed at the end of the 1000 meter run to seal his pentathlon championship.

Dae'Trell Gordon with a put of 53' even picks up 4th place finish in the shot put. That put is just shy of his PB. Dae'Trell made a lot of strides late in the season to get to this point.

Shocks sitting at 100 points which is pretty good relative to expectations coming in.

Events remaining that the Shocks have a chance to score:

                            Triple Jump - Dowdy Elazarig
                            800m Run - Josh Cable
                            200m Dash - Joakim Genereux
3000m Run - The Shocks have 8 runners in the 20 man field. Tulsa has 11 runners in the race and are very strong in the distances as thats where they put most of their scholarship money.
                            4x400 Relay

Josh picks up 4 points for his 5th place finish in the 800. Shocks now at 104 points.

Joakim picks up 2 point for his 7th place finish in the 200. Shocks now have 106 points.

Dowdy Elazarig scores 3 points for his 6th place finish in the triple jump. Shocks now have 109 points.

Houston leads with 115.5, Cincinnati is 2nd with 113, the Shocks are 3rd wtih109 and Tulsa 4th with 67.

The Shocks look pretty good for a 3rd place finish but Tulsa is really strong in the 3k.

Tulsa takes the top 6 spots in the 3000m run good for 36 points. The Shocks fail to score. Shocks now lead Tulas 109 to 103.

The Shocks are not the strong in the 400 so I don't know if they can hold of Tulsa for 3rd place or not.

The Shocks have a really good 4x400 to finish 3rd in both that relay race and overal as they finish third with 115 points to 106 point for Tulsa.

Houston finishes off another team championship scoring 141.5 with Cincinnati finishing 3rd at 128 points.

All-in-all a pretty decent performance for the Shocks. A bit better than I was expecting.

Michael Bryan Locks In No. 8 Seed for NCAA Indoor Championships

                              https://goshockers.com/news/2022/3/2...pionships.aspx

Michael Bryan qualified to the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama with his conference-winning mark of 22.58m/74-1 in the weight throw.

Bryan has won five of the six meets he has competed in this indoor season, breaking his own weight throw school record two separate times. He also broke his own conference record in the event at the conference championships.

I believe that Michael is the only Shocker who will be competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Michael is a senior but I have no idea what his remaining eligibility is. You can have different eligibility remaining for indoor track & filed form what you have for outdoor track & field. Throw in the Covid disruptions which have impacted indoor and outdoor seasons differently and throw in his juco career and some redshirting at WSU and it is more work than I want to do trying to figure that out (even if I could).

BTW, it would appear that Birmingham has hit a home run with the development of the Crossplex facility that has become the new home of the NCAA D-1 Indoor Championship among many other events. For example, last week the AAC Indoor Championships was one of 4 conference indoor championships held at the Crossplex during that week alone.

Michael Bryan Named AAC Field Performer of the Year

                                https://theamerican.org/news/2022/3/...-the-year.aspx

MEN’S INDOOR FIELD MOST OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE
Michael Bryan * Wichita State * Senior * Weight Throw
Bryan broke the American meet record in the men’s weight throw on his way to earning a spot in the NCAA field, logging a top attempt of 22.58m (74-1.0). Bryan’s gold medal throw led him to the eighth seed in the weight throw for the upcoming NCAA Championships.

As a sophomore at Hutchinson CC he finished 5th at the Region VI indoor championships with a throw of 51-1 feet.

Think this guy has been working hard (and pretty much anonymously) at his craft? A 23 foot improvement in his time at Wichita State.

How about some Shockernet love for this Shocker!
