2021-22 Shocker Men XC and Track & Field

There is a reason Tulsa does so well in the distance events...its because they give the bulk of their money to XC athletes in mens and womens with little support to other track and field types. It is interesting to see how schools emphasize groups ie Houston and its sprinters and relay folks. Not many scholarships available for T&F and X country combined. WSU did a great job against a an always strong Houston contingent. And as Shoxlax pointed out Carl Lewis does look like he could still run a gazelle to ground.

RH: "Every Point Mattered"
https://goshockers.com/news/2022/5/1...-mattered.aspx
It took five years and four outdoor championship meets but Wichita State's depth finally caught Houston's speed.
The Shockers scored points in 19 of 21 events and exceeded the chart in 11 of them. Houston scored in 13 events and clustered 93 points in the 100, 200, 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles.
‘Proving a point’: Wichita State men stun Houston for AAC track and field championship

WSU scored in 19 of 21 events and had 28 different athletes score for the team, the kind of depth that helped the Shockers wrack up double-digit points from multiple scorers in the javelin, discus, decathlon and high jump. Rainbolt and his staff of John Wise, John Hetzendorf, Kirk Hunter, Heidi Benton and Pat Wilson take particular pride in recruiting the state of Kansas, which makes it special that 15 different in-state athletes from towns such as Beloit, Bucklin, Douglass, Leroy, Ness City, Wamego and Winfield helped WSU secure the title.
I guess it is fitting that with so many athletes from small town and rural Kansas that the Shocks win was primarily due to field events.
I would think this win has to be the pinnacle (so far) in Coach Rainbolt's long coaching career. He has won a lot of MVC Championships and has had some great athletes but he has never had a team overcome a the challenge that Houston provided.
Certainly a high point for Shocker Athletics so far this year and the only thing left is baseball and softball.
Individually, we will have to see how MIchael Bryan fares in the hammer throw at the NCAA National Championships. Other Shockers who should/could be heading to the NCAA Championships (at least the regionals) are Brady Palen who ranks 15th nationally in the high jump, Taran Taylor whose winning throw this weekend put him at #11 in the country and possibly Yuben Goncalves whose first triple jump competition of he year resulted in jump that ranks #47.Last edited by 1972Shocker; May 16, 2022, 04:58 PM.

Birmingham seems to have hit a home run with the their Crossplex facility where the AAC (and many other conferences) hold their indoor track & field championship meets plus 3 of the last 7 NCAA Indoor Championships among numerous other sporting events and meetings..
A nice small outdoor track & field facility would be nice at Wichita State if it could be surrounded by nice big buildings like Shocker Hall to block the spring winds. In addition, to the Shockers hosting the AAC Championships this year they hosted 3 outdoor meets this season. Mostly drawing Jucos and Non-D1 programs. Any hopes of becoming the Hayward Field of the Midwest are a nice pipe dream. But we need to be the best Wichita State we can be. We just need more rich folks who would like to have an athletic facility on campus with their name on it.
Perhaps the biggest most financially impactful event at Cessna Stadium these days is the Kansas State High School All-Classes State Track & Field Championships.

The NCAA allows 12.6 scholarships for men's track and field which includes XC. No separate scholarships limit for XC. For the women the limit is 18. As far as I know they can be divided up any way you like although I am not 100% sure about that.
Tulsa's men's roster list 29 athletes this year. 21 of those are listed as middle distance or distance runners. They have a few sprinters but the have not field event athletes (long jumpers, high jumpers, triple jumpers, pole vaulters, shot putters, discus throwers, hammer throwers or javelin throwers). There women's roster is of a similar makeup.
Compare that to Wichita States roster which lists 45 athletes (and I have seen it as high as 60) of which 13 athletes are distance and middle distance runners.
This is why Tulsa's men have won the last 8 AAC XC Championships. Louisville won the first one in 2013. The Tulsa men finished 5th and 6th in the NCAA National Championship meet the last 2 years so they seem to be getting stronger.
The Tulsa women have not been quite so dominant but have won 5 of 9 AAC XC Championships. The other 4 were one by the Shockers in 2018, UConn and SMU twice.
The Shocker women have had 4 individual XC Champions. Winny Koskei in 2018, 2019 and 2020 and Yazmine Wright in 2021.Last edited by 1972Shocker; May 18, 2022, 01:13 AM.

The Shocks may need to send a Thank You card to Memphis. The Shockers beat Houston by 6.5 points.
Matt Everett, who is from Winfield, Kansas, spent 2019-20 and the 2020-21 seasons at Memphis before transferring to Wichita State this year. All Matt did was win fhe discuss throw for the Shockers which scored 10 points.
The math is pretty easy to do.

2022 NCAA Track & Field Championships
The NCAA splits the nation into an East Division and a West Division. With the exception of the decathlon/heptathlon the top 48 marks in each event in each division compete in the NCAA Preliminary Rounds. The West Preliminaries will be hosted by the University of Arkansas on March 25-28. Indiana University is hosting the east preliminaries. The top 12 finishers in each event in each Division (24 athletes per event) will move on to the NCAA Championship finals in Eugene, Oregon June 8-11. The top 24 decathletes and heptathletes scorers bypass the prelims and go directly to Eugene.
Looks like the Shocker men have 6 athletes qualifying in 5 field events in the West Preliminaries (The number preceding their name in where they are ranked coming into the meet)::
High Jump
#7 - Brady Palen
#38 - Davis Dubbert
Triple Jump
#23 - Yuben Goncalves
Discus
#33 - Matt Everett
Hammer
#5 - Michael Bryan
Javelin
#6 - Taylor Taran
#39 - Davis Dubbert
Obviously, Brady Palen, Michael Bryan and Taylor Taran have the best shots at moving on to Eugene for the National Finals. But they will need to be at the top of their games.
Adding Adam Moore and Joakim Generoux per @goshox74:
200m Run
#46 Joakim Generoux
1500m Run
#46 Adam MooreLast edited by 1972Shocker; May 20, 2022, 10:36 AM.

Also in the field will be Adam Moore in the 1500m and Joakim Genereux in the 200m. They take the top-48 declared athletes. The list can be found here: https://www.rtspt.com/ncaa/d1outdoor22/
