  • Games of Interest: Nov. 7th - 13th

Gonna get this together now as I won't have much time this weekend. Figured it can get "bumped" when it comes time. I'm leaving out exhibition games, so there won't be a whole lot on here during the beginning of the week.

Also, even though I know the Shox haven't done anything yet to warrant being ranked, I am gonna list teams that are just above us in the pre-season espn AP rankings as a kind of a poll-watch. I will bold the teams of interest. Home teams will again be listed first this year.

Teams will be identified as follows:

    Opponent or Possible opponent

poll-watch teams - any team ahead of us, up to about #20 in the AP poll. I was gonna include those around us that are receiving votes but found that to be WAY to much of a headache to list them all. So I will only list those that are actually RANKED ahead of us.

    Valley teams

Pretty sure there is a game of interest on the 10th even if it is an exhibition.

I usually don't include WSU in the games of interest. There will be plenty of topics on the board discussing those. I guess I can include WSU, but that seems kind of redundant on this message board.

Boy I'm telling you....sure would be fun if the Shocks were playing. Even something like a scrimmage might bring some interesting tidbits.

If only that were the case........

What's the board's feeling about a Valley team matching up against a non-con that we also have scheduled?

            Example: Drake vs. Texas Southern.

My immediate feeling is that Shocker fans ought to cheer on TX Southern, in that our own non-con is more important than the peripheral damage of a Drake loss.

Except that we play Drake at least twice (maybe more with MVC tourney games) compared to once for Texas Southern. Valley teams winning helps our RPI.

But Drake will have other opportunities to negate that loss. A good TX Southern team would do wonders for our rpi. Am I still reading it wrong?

Yes. Opponent winning percentage is the bulk of the RPI, so a game with Drake and Texas Southern is going to place a win and a lose in that column. But since you play Drake twice, that win or lose gets counted double. Let's say that Drake and Texas Southern were the only two teams you played.

If Texas Southern won and you swept both teams your opponent winning percentage from that set of games would be .166 (1-5 record) because you would have Texas Southern at 1-1 and Drake at 0-2, but Drake's record gets counted twice, so 0-4. If Drake won, the winning percentage would be .333 (2-4 record).

It doesn't matter that Drake has more opportunities to win, because Texas Southern improving their RPI at the expense of a team you place twice means that you get no benefit from that RPI boost.

Opponent's opponent winning percentage and home/road factors make it more complicated than this, but the basic rule is that conference opponents losing is rarely good for your RPI, even if you play the team they lost to.

If I've done my math wrong on this let me know.

Yes, that's right. Creighton just got out-rebounded by a team who doesn't start anyone taller than 6-7 and without a player on the roster heavier than 220lbs. They didn't do anything to dispel concerns about their 3-point shooting and I don't think that they will be able to rely on getting that many turnover or getting to the line that frequently against more athletic opponents. I'm not saying that CU can't improve, but I wasn't sold on them and this does nothing to think my analysis was wrong.

I don't have any problem with fans supporting their schools regardless of the situation, but I have to think there's a significant amount of Jack Daniels in the Kool-Aid this guy is drinking.
