I am not sure the Pumps have committed a crime with respect to the ticket adventure.

They bought tickets, which is not a crime, unless the Pumps knew the tickets were stolen property.

I suppose they may have violated scalping laws in some states.

As I think through this, I am pretty sure I have no idea what I am talking about.

The Pumps could be guilty of conspiracy to defraud.

And there is the old standby - tax evasion.

I wonder when the secret taped phone calls and emails begin to surface.

By the numbers - this is really simple.

      1) $1 - 3 mill of tickets get funneled out of the KU athletic department
      2) These are mainly high-dollar tickets worth maybe 4 times their face value
      3) The payoff to KU staffers and alum is reported at $800K
      4) The tickets were worth a minimum of maybe $3-4 mill, possibly $10 mill.
      5) The Pump brothers got the rest of the money.
      6) The Pump brothers are prominent AAU coaches involved with top-level recruits.
      7) 9 players the Pump brothers had on their summer teams ended up at KU.

Follow the money. There is at least the appearance that KU is buying players. The NCAA says this is not acceptable. We'll see.

It doesn't matter if it happened before Lew got there...it certainly happened while he was there.

If you are unable to see this as at least the appearance of an ongoing disregard of rules at KU, then you need to pull your head out to where the sun does shine.

      1) Boosters taking recruits from Oklahoma to Lawrence for all the home games.
      2) Coaches taking tests for players to make them eligible.
      3) Envelopes of money given to players - and placed IN THEIR ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MAIL BOXES!

The NCAA put some slap-on-the-wrist sanctions on KU and took away a basketball scholarship, so Brady Morningstar gives up his scholarship while his Dad was pocketing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the athletic department.

Talk about thumbing your nose at NCAA sanctions! Take away a scholarship, and KU will funnel hundreds of thousands to the father of a player who will play as a walk-on for a year.

KC Pump N' Run players on KU and the year they committed:

      Travis Releford- 2008
      Tyrel Reed- 2007
      Conner Teahan- 2007
      Brady Morningstar- 2006

KC Pump N' Run players on MU and the year they committed:

      Ricky Kreklow- 2010
      Michael Dixon- 2009
      Steve Moore- 2008
      Marcus Denmon- 2008
      Leo Lyons- 2005

Other players from KC Pump N' Run:

Christian Kirk- 2011 (Uncommitted, but not going to KU)
      Trevor Releford- 2010 (Alabama)
Rian Pearson- 2009 (Wisconsin Green-Bay and Toledo)
      Justin Clark- 2009 (Illinois State)
      Jeff Reid- 2009 (St. Louis)
      Dorian Green- 2009 (Colorado State)
      Denver Holmes- 2008 (Evansville)
      Domonique Morrison- 2008 (Oral Roberts)
      Johnny Coy- 2008 (Arizona State)
Ty Madupe- 2008 (Illinois State and then transferred)
      Lamont Austin- 2007 (Missouri State)
      Kyle Weems- 2007 (Missouri State)
Roderick Pearson- 2006 (Southeast Missouri State)
Casey Crawford- 2006 (Wake Forest and Colorado)
      Chris Balham- 2005 (Nebraska)
      Antonio Hanson- 2005 (Tulsa)
      Marcus Frye- 2005 (Northern Colorado)

Yep, they're clearly funneling players to KU. Because KU needs help in recruiting players to its basketball program.

If they've been paying them all along, I guess we'll never know how they do without all this "help". This was the one time they've been caught, who knows what else has been going on.

LJ Goolsby is a pretty good guy. I'd find it hard to believe he was involved in anything nefarious. Besides, does KU really need to "grease the skids" in order for strong local area talent to go to KU?

I don't think many are too concerned about the KC players. There are other Pump teams that I think is where the speculation is more focused here.
Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan
            RIP Guy Always A Shocker
Carpenter Place - A blessing to many young girls/women
ICT S.O.S - Great local cause fighting against human trafficking
Wartick Insurance Agency - Saved me money with more coverage.
Save Shocker Sports - A rallying cry

Nightwatchman, learn to properly use the quote feature, don't post while drinking, go away or all of the above.

Veritas, phog.net is really calling your name.

The "KU doesn't need to cheat" defense is WELL WORN OUT NOW.

              Listen carefully Hawkies: KU CHEATED.

              That is all.

Btw, and not to get too excited, but the word from the REAL money men around town is that this thing is nowhere near over and the other shoe may be ready to drop.

                Hey Doc,

To verify about the thing not being near over, I have heard from someone close to a "money man" who has sunk money into KU athletic improvements that is not near over as well. Both towers are burning so get away from ground zero.

Well we must all be wrong then. I mean, KU doesn't have to cheat to get the best of the best, right?

That squeaky clean, all that's right in sports AND society, social and evolutionary model for ALL mankind COULDN'T POSSIBLY have cheated! Why on earth would they? KU is the best.

Dusting off the old cobwebs, doesn't this line follow a loose parallel with SMU from the late 1980s? I guess we haven't seen the "slush fund" (yet,) but you've got laundering, payments to outgoing players, repeat offenses in a short time, the "lack of institutional control," etc. At what point does the NCAA stop playing favorites and dish out the penalty they would have given any other school?

                          • Is ESPN covering this story in the slightest?

I am not a dedicated fan of ESPN, but I watch blurbs almost every evening.

                            • Maybe its just me but I think the bigger story is the Pump brothers and their ticket scamming operation. I kinda think there are numerous universities involved KU just got caught. There was that old article about how coaches felt that if they didn't give the pump brothers their final 4 tickets they wouldn't get preferential treatment with their AAU players.

It will be interesting to see how this all unfolds.

However, I see you didn't change the grammar.

Good ol' KU edumacation. Maybe they should be allowed to raise their admission standards higher than the rest of the Regents schools, like they want. Apparently what they're doing now isn't getting the job done... "flagship" school and all.
