3. Get cheer leaders who actually take charge and try to organize the crowd. This group IMO are really weak from years past.
4. Start the tradition of standing for defense out of every timeout.
2. That might work, I don't know the residence hall people that well...
3. Agreed. And the Shocker Maniac group needs to get more involved with creativity as well. Heck, both sides need to talk to the pep band, easily the most creative of the official spirit groups...
4. Can't. Some old person with deeper pockets than yours would complain.Deep in the heart of couldn't give a crap about college basketball-land and I miss the SHOX.

I remember the watch party at the bowling alley behind what was then Jocks and Jills when the 2006 team clinched a tie for 1st by beating Drake. there were about 6 cheerleaders there.
Those 6 people were the least interested in the game of anybody in the room and probably the least interested of anybody in the building. They didn't pay any attention to the game, didn't watch the game.
The cheerleaders are more interested in working on their stunts than in the games.
If someone had the wit, the time to do the research, and the time to write up a page or two of potential taunts and chants, getting someone to hand them out at games could probably be arranged. The printing cost could probably be offset by advertising, especially if the needed wit and humor was present.
WSU will never have a real active student group. There aren't enough students at WSU on Mom and Dad's money for that. That doesn't mean us old farts can't do something. If I was handed something clever to chant when an opponent went to the FT line, you bet I'd go for it and LOVE it.The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

Here's a novel idea, if we want a more engaged crowd like USU's, how about we start a streak of 10 consecutive years of 23 plus wins and multiple NCAA Tourney appearances? Winning will bring out the monster and crazy in people, we just have to get there first.

Our fan base and student population is different than USU and many schools. However, I still think that the 1100 tickets that are available should be filled by students (only 1100, and they're FREE basically) and for crying out loud they can come up with some new stuff for chants, etc. What was cool about the USU folks is their coordinated stuff and the originality. There's no reason why 1100 WSU students can't be some of the best despite not being the largest.

Originally posted by BCSCatSuccess breeds large and noisy crowds especially when a large part of the arena is reserved for students. When we were bad for an extended time students quit going and that really hurt KSU crowds. Won't hurt WSU as much since they have such a small student crowd and older fans tend to keep going so they can keep their seats for when success returns. Doesn't hurt to have 500K population either. Students are there 4-6 years and gone. KSU crowds are back to where they were in the 70's at Ahearn when I was in school. Loud, creative and being noticed nationally. When Mussberger says it's the best student section he's seen all season and the Gameday crew agrees it means something. I have been to a few games at WSU and the crowds are very good considering the lack of students but not like Ahearn was or Allen was before they moved the students and no where near what the Bram is like now. Give Marshall a break!
You're the hot name at the moment, but don't get carried away with your flashpan of success and your beyond lame excuses.Deuces Valley.

I must say our student crowds were pretty exceptional in the 2005-2007 period. We had some real clever and dedicated students. Lots of pride, enthusiasm, rowdiness, etc. It may not be a coincidence that that time period had our relatively best success.
The students that do show up are good and very dedicated and I appreciate that. But they just don't seem to have the creative kick and "fire" like they did about 4 to 5 years ago. :(Deuces Valley.

LOL at ShockerFever for confirming my post. Success on the court always affects crowds especially when a large amount of students are involved. That's why you saw the sparse crowd at the Bram in '01 and why it's usually packed now. The older crowd at Koch means it's usually fuller when times are not as good though I have been to every WSU/KSU game there since we moved here in '85 and never had any trouble getting tickets and there was plenty of purple there.
Flash in the pan?
19 Conference championships
4 Final fours
16 Sweet Sixteens
11 Elite Eights
Then about 15 years of wondering in the wilderness ala WSU in the 90's and early '00s.
But since then finished 4th, 3rd, 4th and likely 2nd in one of the top conferences in the country. Recruiting is continuing to be very successful. Future is very bright.
So not so much "flash in the pan".
