  • There is no doubt that Williams got beat on defense sometimes, but I thought that our perimeter defense was not good and most Shocker guards (no all Shocker guards including KM) got beat on dribble drives, not just DW.

    • It was pretty impressive how bad we were at defending ball screens...

      • On the call in show the Coach who was with Ted Woodward said that they hadn't had the time to work on some things concerning ball screens and Handoffs at the perimeter.
The mountains are calling, and I must go.

Excuses.... This is stuff you learn in at least HS. There's no reason for them to be as bad as they were on it tonight.

This is what I was told:

            1. Processing error.
            2. Hannah not at fault.
            3. Based upon games played last year, he is inelgible for some games this year.
            4. Games played last year x 10% = games inelgible to play this year.
            5. I know this sounds dumb, but Hannah has to sit out 3.5 games. I suppose the Shockers played 35 games last year.

I have no idea, whether the Newman game counts as sit-out 1.

I imagine my information is at least 4th hand. It did come from a big booster though.
Pretty much confirms the "3 game suspension" that I heard as well. Probably a good possibility since the stories are aligned pretty well.

That sucks :(. But Pitt isn't the Pitt of the last few years. I think we'll still have a good team.

            • Credit to Newman for a good effort and some impressive shooting (except for their FT shooting), but the Shocks have a lot of work to do on the defensive end if we are going to be anywhere near as good as we had hoped.

Garrett did look much better and D-Will was a pleasant surprise. Toure' was solid, especially in the 2nd half. Hatch looks much more comfortable and confident with is shot. Ellis and Durley need to step it up.

Rebounding was strong and FT shooting was very good.

19 turnovers vs 12 for Newman was not a good stat.

              I give the Shocks a B- on offense, a D on defense and a C- overall.

Hard to say how much Clevin's situation threw things out of kilter in terms of team chemistry, leadership and lineup rotations.

Not too concerned though. The raw material is there and we should get better as the HCGM refines his primary rotations and works out some of the kinks this game revealed.

I would much rather the team have to work on defense than offense. Defense is much easier to improve...it's mostly determination. This team was good defensively last year...they'll be good this year too.

                • We have never defended ball screens good ... even when Turgeon was here too. We do not defend the perimeter close enough, and hence give up too many 3's.

I have no doubts that Williams D will be improved as we go along. I am concerned about a lack of offense from Manigault, and I still believe a PG that can't score is only half a guard. A PG has to be able to do it all, score and run the team.... Hannah would be a good example. Look at all the really good teams and they have a high scoring PG.

I chose Williams as being my 'darkhorse' of the year (and I did this at the game). He is talented.

Manigault was okay, but just okay... (a couple more games watching him wouldn't hurt).

Hamilton will redshirt. I think Richardson needs too also.

I have to give the team closer to a D on both offense and defense, but I'm not saying that is a bad thing. I realize that this is early, and that not having Clevin to solidify the offense (and the defense to a smaller extent) made a big difference. If the team has to go without Clevin for 3 regular season games, that will certainly hurt for those games. However, it will force Toure' and the two freshmen point guards to hone their skills at the point a little more early and could end up as a blessing in disquise. No, I don't want to go without Clevin at all, especially against Pitt. But, if Toure' gets more work at the point and Kenny and Demetric get more playing time early, that could easily prove to be beneficial in February and March. I prefer to look at the positives and while the Clevin Hannah situation is certainly a negative, positives could result.

                    • Being that the clerical oversight involved Hannah and Taylor Gilmore it makes we wonder if they forgot to pull the files for G & H wile processing the annual certifications with the NCAA.

                      • Clerical oversight? Sounds like it is manditory NCAA paperwork. Somebody (maybe several somebodies) gets terminated for this. Unacceptable.

                        1. Jason Ault was good.

                        2. For the first time in several years, ate at Carlos O'Kellys, where the food is practically always about average.

                        3. Stutz leaned to dunk when up close. Very good. Stamina was better.

                        4. We missed Ramon's intensity.

                        5. Manigault was 1-4 or 1-3 of those floaters in the lane. They were all ugly, and no one is ever going to guard him. He has far less offensive skills than Adam Liberty or Wendell. Also not enough motor. Richardson is more ready to compete.

                        6. If Hatch was to average 30 minutes a game and average 12-14 ppg; he could acually get some mention for All Valley. Who would have ever projected that?

                        7. Blair and Ellis are going to foul. We will be forced to play small at times.

                        8. I expected more transition baskets.

                        9. Murry and Kyles needed to be more dominant, yes?

                        10. Crowd was not into the game much, and neither were the players.

                        11. Newman was pretty good, and we need to defend the perimeter better.

                          • Stutz at the post and Durley at the 4 was played quite a bit last night. That combination could be a good one as the year progresses and Durley has a chance to learn the assignments better at the 4.

                              • I think many of us were/are trying to get that information, but since the details were so late/slow in coming to light, we are still looking for the details.

I spent some time last night searching for the actual paperwork, and as of yet, have not been successful (and I'm still not exactly sure what I am looking for-which doesn't help).
