I believe my hotel in STL was about a mile away this last year. Pretty close to that anyway. It really wasn't that bad and I actually kind of enjoyed it.

If you don't want to have to walk more than a couple blocks, maybe you could have a helicopter deliver you at the front door.

I'm afraid that the Intrust Bank Arena will be no different than any other arena ever built. Not every person will get a front row parking spot or seat. Unfortunately, that's a reality when you put more than a couple thousand people in one building.

If you thought differently, you were mistaken.

Actually the real issue with parking downtown, is that it is not public parking, but private parking. When the city gave the number of parking spaces downtown in a press release they included all private parking spots downtown in that figure. The number of true public parking spots downtown are very very limited. Just because you see a parking lot downtown doesn't mean its for you to park in.

I am not for sure. First of all the Sedgwick County Commission took out a plan for a hotel near the arena before it was built. I'm sure that the struggling economy can't help with that situation.

Here is a dated article from 2006 about it. http://www.hotel-online.com/News/PR2...chitaSite.html

"I've got to be satisfied by the locations available," Hammons said. "It's all about the market first -- and it looks like the market is there -- and location second."

That was in 2006 and I know the "market" may not be what it was then. I know that developers and the Spaghetti Warehouse are close to lining up deals for things that could go into that building. I do not know if a hotel could.

But yes downtown hotel rooms are something that need to be boosted. The NCAA tournament really, really looks at those sort of things.

The article says around 1,500 downtown hotel rooms are needed to compete for big conventions and events. Wichita currently has around 11-1200

Thats my only complaint about parking. But I also dont mind parking in the public spots and walking on. Ill warm up inside if its cold and get hotter if its hot outside bleh im there for a reason and 9/10 its to yell scream and cause a ruckus anyways.

You’re kidding right? You don’t think every single private lot will be made available after hours and weekends (for a price of course)? I can’t recall ever visiting a decent sized town that didn’t have private lots open to the public during after hours, weekends or special events. Go to an OKC Thunder game and you’ll see.

So the public parking available at the colliseum was suppossed to be free even though I had to pay a parking fee for some venues?

Thanks wsushox. All good and valid points. We're basically 1 solid, or 2 mediocre hotels away from filling up to that 1500 threshold.

Yea I am not for sure if the current number I gave (which is actually dated) includes the newest downtown hotel, The Courtyard Marriott which opened in 2007. Either way you are probably right one more hotel downtown will help.

One of the hotels that is apart of the largest number of rooms is the Hyatt. Most people are not going to pay that price for hotel. So you cant count on that for rooms! Like I said, DUMB! Plus I am tired of walking, I have to walk from my detached garage everyday when I get home! lol

The Hyatt is usually the first hotel that gets fully booked whenever there is a convention/event downtown. I don't think you have to worry about people not wanting to stay there.
