80-90% of Hawkins' game is driving to the basket. He's going to be in more situations than any of our other players to charge. I've seen him be able to avoid the charge just as often, so he clearly has the control. This issue, as I see it, is between the ears.

If you want to talk about out of control, look no further than guards who drive the lane, pass off, but keep going right into a defender.
I was just about to post something along these lines. There have been baskets made by Hawkins where the body control was nothing short of amazing. He might have the best body control on the team. But as you say, Royal, there seems to be a lack of recognition at times about what the best play would be. (The best case read on this is that he simply has a lot of confidence about his ability to get by the defender. Even if that is the case, however, by this point in the season with the number of charges he has committed, he simply has to change his approach). At the last Shocker BB luncheon, Marshall mentioned that they have been working with Hawkins on this and have seen some improvement. It's clearly still a work in progress. I like Hawk's game a lot and I think that, as with Hatch, a year off does cause some rust to accumulate. Hopefully we will see even more improvement in the future.

    • Regarding his improvement, since he had two charges last night, does that mean that some game previously he had three?

      • Hatch and Hawkins situations are totally different. I hope AJ was not accumulating rust last year.

        • Maybe Hawk wasn't getting it called in the A-10. Marshall says they play pretty physical in practice and don't call many fouls.

It could just be that's the way he's played his entire college career.
