Common sense seems to be the main culprit here. KU and WSU are 150 miles apart, why not play? When we see KU play Winston Salem and Albany at home, it makes some WSU fans scratch their head. But as time goes by, and we continue to not play each other, I'm hoping that the idea of KU and WSU ever scheduling each other goes way of the Dodo. There is no sense to argue about it cuz it ain't gonna happen. But every year this topic comes up and the WSU and KU bashers come out of the woodwork and we all throw jabs at each other pretending there really is a rivalry, what a joke.
You are right, the two schools are 150 miles apart... but that isn't really the argument here, is it? I think you also know why the Albanys and Winston-Salems are coming to Lawrence. They want a pay day bigger than their own home games bring, and they want their kids to have the experience of playing in AFH. They know a home-and-home is out of the question. I doubt you saying you'd like WSU to have the same terms as Albany gets. amd it seems that is something most Shocker fans don't want. I grow weary of both sides with the same argument over, and over, and over. If WSU doesn't want a one and done, the Albany and Winston-Salem argument needs to disappear from these threads, too.
I also think the WSU AD recognizes that beating KU in baseball gets them a little more pub with people around the state that don't follow college baseball, and draws a little bigger crowd to the Eck than playing Doane College or Arkansas-Little Rock. Someone enlighten me on Shocker home attendance vs. KU and KSU compared to some of the other non-cons on the baseball schedule.
For the record, I hope when Self and Marshall have moved on, because I don't think it will happen while both are coaching where they are now, KU and WSU will start playing home and home. But, I completely understand why it isn't feasible, unless someone comes up with a nifty PPV compensation package. Right now, I doubt demand for a PPV would be high, at least until both teams playing better than they are now.
Texas' athletic budget is over $100M these days. KU has to squeeze every last penny out of the fans and every opportunity - as KU's budget has ballooned from the high 20's to about $55M in the last three years or so.
I hope the Shocks break through against Drake. Oh, and I forgot to add to the person who referenced the Iowa deal... back in the day the Iowa legislature had to force Iowa to schedule Iowa State. Obviously, being in separate conferences, the games between the two were not automatic and Iowa State fans whined about it for what seemed like forever.
So, the legislature threatened to pass legislation to force the two schools to play each other, and UNI and Drake benefited from that finally happening. I don't remember now whether the legislation was enacted, or if the Iowa AD finally gave in to public pressure. Someone else here probably remembers.
Your generation has grown up with the schools all playing each other, but there's more history behind that then you may know.

Originally posted by ShockCityI will never feel any brotherly love or have any fond feelings for KU for the following reasons, and I don't care that Turg went there or we're all Kansans, or whatever. KU can eat it as far as I'm concerned.
- KU never wanted WSU in the Regents system, and they fought tooth and nail against it. They continuously sought to withhold Regents funding of advancements at WSU because they were scared of competition.
- D-Bag Roy Williams
- Even bigger D-Bag Lew Perkins
- The fact that the expect WSU to play them in baseball every year (because it makes them look good), yet they won't return the favor in basketball.
I agree with the majority of Jayhawks fans on this thread that I wish that the teams would play but I see the reasons on both sides not to do it.
I can understand the hard feelings about the state funding/Regents fights, but as a KU alum I recognize the realities of the situation in this state in that higher education on a whole is underfunded and there is only so much money to go around. I want my institution to fight for every dollar that is available. We are already at a competitive disadvantage against schools like Nebraska and Missouri because we have 2-3 major public institutions in the state where they only have 1. Funding is not going to go up, and it is up to each institution to take care of themselves. It sucks that the schools have to be in competition with each other, maybe it could have been set up better so there wouldn't have been overlapping focuses, i.e. KSU ag only, WSU engineering, KU liberal arts, etc., but we can't go back in time. We owe it to the students to give them the best educational opportunities available, if that means that one school does it at the expense of another, then so be it.

Like Royal eluded to however, there is more animosity among "veteran" WSU alums and fans toward KU that goes beyond sports. KU controlling the Kansas Board of Regents, KU raising hell over Doctorate programs WSU wanted to create, etc. That has a lot to do with seeing KU in a negative light.
If this were simply a sports issue, then I would venture to say that a lot of WSU fans would cheer for KU. We have no rivalry so why would we care how good or bad KU performs on the field or on the court. Again, only if this was a sports issue. Unfortunately, it is not and KU's attack on WSU academic advancement is a major reason why.
But alas, I see what you do on phog.net and you do give WSU props from time-to-time and I thank you for that.

I understand what you are saying. Again, most WSU fans, particularly the younger generation do not know the history behind KU and WSU. They don't understand that before KU's football team recent success, that basketball represented and still does a major cash cow towards athletic funding. They may not take the time to understand that in order for you to keep up with the Jones' such as Texas, OU and Boone Pickens, you need pay days at home.

No, what's too bad is that KU feels that even though WSU has the capability to do this Biosciences Composites Industry largely on its own, that it's a new and cool medical thing that could get a lot of money and notoriety thrown at it from across the nation and the world. Therefore, WSU simply cannot have it. KU must own something that new and cool.
Read it as power and greed and you get the gist of it.
After an Eagle news article on Sunday, the KBA told WSU and KU leaders that they needed to tell the KBA Thursday whether the two schools can work together on the initiative. McDonald told the editorial board that WSU no longer has major differences with KU and that the will is there to resolve remaining issues.
But the KBA should have taken such action sooner. McDonald said that WSU asked the KBA several times to help resolve disagreements with KU, but the KBA declined to get involved.
McDonald also thinks it would have been better if the KBA had kept proposals by KU and WSU separate, instead of forcing a partnership. That certainly could have speeded up the process. But Thornton argues that Kansas needs universities to work together -- and have strong leadership from private industry -- for a biomaterials cluster to be successful.
What everyone should agree on is that WSU, KU and the KBA need to resolve their differences and move this initiative forward. This project is too important for bickering and foot-dragging.
