Originally posted by Ricky BobbyI truly wish I could have attended KU back in the day, rather than WSU.
Unfortunately, when I went to apply I learned that KU was a good $7 more per credit hour, and required the exact same GPA and ACT score to get in. Clearly, those conditions outpaced my means and abilities, as well as most of my fellow WSU students, so I had to "settle" on WSU. After graduation, I then had to "settle" on working for one of the most high-profile firms in the midwest, along with boatloads of other fellow WSU alum losers. My boss, his boss, and many of the top brass are also WSU business and engineering "leftovers". It's amazing we posses enough IQ points to get anything done.
Some days I wish I could have fulfilled my dreams of an education at the Harvard of the midwest- complete with working in a coffee shop as an "internship", owning a closet full of Birkenstock's, applying beeswax to my white-man dreads, seeing how long I could go without a bath, and protesting the infringement of the habitat and mating habits of the western blue-hair dung beetle- but alas I did survive in the sea of WSU melancholy.
When I get back to my non-Johnson County, non-ARM-financed home tonight I may just have to cry into the arms of my fellow WSU alum wifey. I'll take some solace in my plight when I look at my investment portfolio, the equity in my home, or the non-leased internal-combustion machinery in my garage, and realize it might have not been possible as a KU grad and the accompanying Starbuck's barista, or Greenpeace activist career.
What might my life be like if I were a KU alum and fan? The most obvious advantage, that I could think of, would be the ability to drop a load without peeling off the wallpaper in the next room. That'd be fantastic-o! Also, sporting 3 popped collars while being automatically uber-cool and smug, all at the same time, would complete my life experience.
Oh well...
Honestly, I wish they'd just play a damn series so there could be some kind of catharsis and (hopefully) an end to the bitterness and acrimony that not playing has only exacerbated. Even a loss to KU (which would be *very* likely at this point, as unpopular an opinion that might be around here) would help end some of the bad feelings. As beatmu said over there, we're all Kansans. Some mutual respect would go a mile.

I have to agree with that last point of RyneSandberg's... if we just played, we'd feel so much better about the other guys. I know I almost felt positive about the Jhawks back when Larry Brown was coach, but that was because we were playing. Even if we lose, it still shows respect to play.

Well I have changed my mind.
I don't ever want to play KU unless its an NCAA match-up. Reasons why:
1) Our reputation here at WSU is too classy to be tarnished by playing those guys.
2) We have nothing to win if we beat them -- they will just call it a fluke or rebuilding year on their part.
3) We can only degrade the Valley conference if we lose to them.
4) The state of Kansas doesn't need another rivalry -- heck Butler County versus Coffeyville football rivalry has me all stressed out as it is.
5) And frankly I don't think the media or any corporate sponsorships would be interested in such an event. I mean most of the companies around here would have far too many employees with "skin in the game", and we wouldn't want to disturb the workforce around either community with something as silly as a basketball game.
6) Also, the trip between our beloved Wichita and the other place known as Lawrence is WAY too far to drive for the fans of both communities. Heck with all of the federal dollars being pumped into KU for man-made global warming research, it just wouldn't be responsible for them to promote an event where people would have to pour gallons and gallons of carbon-dioxide emissions into the atmosphere for a simple 2 to 2.5 hour event.
No, I say having a back and forth with KU just doesn't make sense for Old WSU. We have greener pastures to graze in. So BRING IT ON Sacramento State -- that's the 1 and 1 we want!Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!

I'll again say I'm fine with not playing them. Especially if it's a one and done.

When will the madness end? I check out phog.net and 'beatmu' is very respectable toward WSU, I've seen topics created by beatmu praising WSU whether in baseball or basketball. 'Indy' has been very respectful on our board. I like these guys. Of course, you have the fanatical homers on each side that keep the fire burning.
These are the same WSU fans who come out of the woodwork and post on phog.net that we are the best team in the state of Kansas during our S16 run and 8-0 start the following season. Stupid bandwagon WSU fans who create dumb t-shirts that say 'Self-Explanatory' or whatever dumb idea it was. Where are they now?
I would like to see the Administrators delete any future topics about the reason why WSU and KU don't play each other. It is never going to happen and to keep discussing the why and why nots is futile. Lets talk about the reason why we suck so bad instead of why KU and WSU don't play each other.

i have to admit, i never realized there was any hatred from Wichita State fans toward Kansas. granted, i may be pretty young (recent college grad) compared to some of you, so i haven't really seen any type of competition between the two schools. the stupid generalizations about Lawrence, the school, the basketball team...i'm completely lost at the point of it. i figured being from the same state, having shared some connections like Turgeon and you guys not being Kansas State would be enough for us to get along. i don't know Kansas fans that outwardly get angry or make stupid comments about WSU, so i didn't expect there'd be any from either side really. some of your posters even have avatars of KU from what i've seen. when i was a little kid and went to the CWS, i cheered for you guys despite having no connection other than Kansas to your school. when you guys made it to the Sweet 16 a few years back, i was cheering my ass off for you guys - that's how rival-less i feel toward WSU.
as for Kansas playing Wichita State, it seems like a lot of the pushing for this comes from the WSU fans. it feels like something that gets brought up or complained about by lots of the Shocker fans i come across, or on boards like this, but is never brought up by Kansas fans at all. for the simple fact that in my lifetime, we've never been rivals, play in separate leagues, and the fact that my friends from Wichita are bigger KU fans than WSU fans...i've never really found it to be an issue (and to be clear, i am NOT whatsoever saying that people from Wichita like KU more than WSU in general, merely that the ones that chose to come to KU like KU more, which more redundant than anything).
why do you guys feel that it is a truly pressing need that WSU and KU play each other in basketball? i don't understand how "KU plays everyone else in Kansas" is a reason that we must get this matchup done.
also, excuse any Kansas a**hats. it seems that message boards bring out the biggest pricks in any group, no matter the affiliation.

KU doesn't seem to mind to schedule WSU in baseball, why? Because we are the top dog in the state and KU want's to knock us down. WSU is not afraid to play anybody anywhere in baseball and is more than happy to schedule KU. Why can't KU do the same thing in basketball? I know, but see the common sense arguement here?
We are also are jealous of our neighbors to the NE. The state of Iowa has a fine gentleman's agreement where Drake, UNI, Iowa and Iowa State all play each other, why can't we all get along? Common sense says let's hook it up, but what prevents us from playing each other is what I call the three sides to the story. Ours, yours and the truth.
Common sense seems to be the main culprit here. KU and WSU are 150 miles apart, why not play? When we see KU play Winston Salem and Albany at home, it makes some WSU fans scratch their head. But as time goes by, and we continue to not play each other, I'm hoping that the idea of KU and WSU ever scheduling each other goes way of the Dodo. There is no sense to argue about it cuz it ain't gonna happen. But every year this topic comes up and the WSU and KU bashers come out of the woodwork and we all throw jabs at each other pretending there really is a rivalry, what a joke.

ibleedcrimsonandblue,
Being a recent grad you probably don't have the knowledge of the history between a KU-run regents system several decades ago and the WSU institution. Much (not all) of the disdain for KU comes more from what the school and its alums have done and tried to do to WSU.
As for the t-shirt crap that pops up on the KU board, these are students we're talking about. And they probably also get endless crap from their friends who attend KU, so can you blame them for rubbing a little back in their faces when the opportunity exists? If you want to start throwing stones everytime a group of students does something lame or stupid you're going to need rotator cuff surgery.
Personally, I don't care if we play KU or not. A game won't help us any more than it would hurt KU. But having the state schools play each other is good for the state of basketball here. If KU refuses to play for money issues, then they've lost sight of the fact that this is still a game played by amateurs. If they refuse to play because it's a "no win" situation, then they are cowards. If they refuse to play because of a minor, two-decades old incident, then they are petty. (If WSU was preventing KU from adding doctorate programs or trying to turn KU into WSU-Lawrence, then I might understand holding a grudge.)

I will never feel any brotherly love or have any fond feelings for KU for the following reasons, and I don't care that Turg went there or we're all Kansans, or whatever. KU can eat it as far as I'm concerned.
- KU never wanted WSU in the Regents system, and they fought tooth and nail against it. They continuously sought to withhold Regents funding of advancements at WSU because they were scared of competition.
- D-Bag Roy Williams
- Even bigger D-Bag Lew Perkins
- The fact that the expect WSU to play them in baseball every year (because it makes them look good), yet they won't return the favor in basketball.

WSU plays KU in baseball because Gene is a bigger man than all men combined in the city of Lawrence.
Yes, the funding discrimination continues to this day. The new Biosciences Initiative/Composites Industry is just the latest power-grab from KU supporters. It has gone on for at least 40 years and shows no signs of letting up. I knew the day that project was announced by WSU that KU wouldn't let it happen without meddling in it to the point that it would die on the vine unless KU played the major role in it, along with the money that comes with it.
I know at least one legislator investigating the reason behind the delay in funding.
