  • There is no doubt that Garrett needs to improve his rebounding and other aspects of his Game. No one is saying he is a finished product in his 3rd game of D-1 basketball. But I think he is ahead of where most expected him to be at this point and he certainly took advantage of his size offensively last night.

His size advantage equated to only 3 rebounds (2 off, 1 def), which places his overall performance at only a "C".......
I don't completely disagree. Garrett needs to be snagging a rebound every 5-6 minutes he plays. But I think that will come in time as he learns to position himself better and gains experience. In high school he didn't have to work very hard for rebounds.

He'll get there. Guys with his frame typically aren't great rebounders unless they are just uber-athletic for their size, and especially if they have a guy like Clemente on the floor who has the ability to take rebounds away.
Garrett was flat-footed around the glass when it came to rebounding most of the game. I expect him to get better at rebounding, as he will become part of HCGM's grave disappointment if he doesn't improve. I predict garrett will be doing some extra rebounding drills this week.

      • Garrett is definitely ahead of Paul Miller in this stage of his career. What i like that Garrett does, and that Paul hardly ever did, was when he gets a chance to throw it down, he does.

        • Lets also realize that Garrett does a pretty good job of blocking out. He may not get the rebound, but he sure helps others rack up a few more by doing so.

RC, as I watched I could not believe how he was able to get some of the boards that he did. The guy seems to have a reach that spans the entire court.

JTD, played well but still looked a little lost at times, especially in the first half.

It was great to see Griz get back at it, even better to hear the reception the fans gave him.

And the volleyball team at the half...HOT!
I’ve been critical in the past of our marketing department and some of the low-majorish productions. The recognition of the Volleyball team at half-time simply brought tears to my eyes and was first class. Giving coach Lamb a microphone and allowing him to address the crowd was a special touch. I’m sure that Doc and others who follow Volleyball closely felt like proud parents last night. My out of town guests were very impressed with the recognition and the ‘classiness’ of the young women and coaches. If you weren’t a proud Wichita State alum, student, fan, etc., last night, you simply will never be one.

We had 43 straight sellouts from 2004-08. Did our sellouts in 07 and last year translate to home success?

Honestly, don't expect too rowdy of a crowd coming off a home loss to UMKC and with expectations so low right now. It may not be right, but it can be expected. Give 'em something to cheer about and they'll cheer.

How rowdy has Arrowhead been lately?...

And it is pathetic that the student section isn't full when the tix are free. Our students are just as bandwagonish as our regular fans.

Also consider he's been out of high school for about 6 months and he's just completed his third collegiate game. What did Paul do in his third collegiate game?

Granted, it wasn't the toughest competition, but 22 points by a frosh in 20 something minutes is pretty impressive.

                  What's your vertical?

                  • I like a lot of things that Stutz does already. He keeps the ball high and either takes it to the basket or kicks the ball back out. Guards aren't able to knock the ball away if you keep it out of their reach. He has nice soft hands and is able to finish with either hand.

I expect him to get a few more rebounds as time goes on. He will get bigger and stronger, I think he will put on 30-40 pounds of muscle the next two years. Centers won't always get that many rebounds if you have a glass-eater like Ramon or X at the PF. If the other team jacks it up from outside a lot there aren't going to be that many rebounds for the post players. Last year Matt Braeuer lead the team in rebounds in least one game I remember.

Yep, he is persona non grata within 200 yards of Wichita State.

If you go by the grading scale Snapshot9 gave in the 2008-2009 Prouty Ratings thread, both Stutz (0.577) and Murray (0.502) would have been given A's.

                        • I was playing around with the Prouty Rating for Stutz. If he had the rebounding prowess that Clemente has, he could increase his rating another tenth for the season to around 0.571 from his current rating of 0.467. In a couple of years he should be up to that level unless we have another Clemente type player that snags all the rebounds.

                          • I like what Garrett has done so far, just be careful about putting too much stock into the Centenary game. I have a feeling that playing against Greg Monroe and two other tournament-caliber teams is going to normalize his numbers just a bit.
