Found an unlocked door to CKA this morning and showed myself around a bit. Snagged this picture from the floor. Real crisp look. Can't wait to see the live action under the new lights

Purely a public service for the Shockernetters.

Lighting only the floor will make a better viewing experience for those at the game. Being in a dark space looking into a lighted space is much better than being in a lit space looking into dark. I'm thinking maybe they're thinking more about those st the game than worrying about people watching on TV thinking there are people in the stands.

I promise I will report on what I saw - the lights! - the lights!
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

There could possibly be lots of "research" done on the lighting during volleyball season.

Emily will no doubt appreciate having help in lighting up the court:

There are a lot of good reasons for taking in a Shocker Volleyball game (I plan on taking them all in). Watching Emily is among them. Watching Emily play is also near the top of the list. Hopefully, the new lighting will only enhance the experience.

I’ve never been to a volleyball game at Charles Koch arena. To be honest, I’ve never been to one in my life. Is it worthwhile? With the 2 & 1/2 hour drive up Wichita, if we make an evening of it, dinner and all, it might be worth it.

If you don't know anything else about it..don't know anything about the players, etc., I would say that you would still enjoy it though you might not be WOWED by it.

If you are able to go to an event like Volleyball 101, spend some time talking to the Lambs or any of the players...and then go watch a volleyball match, you'll be hooked.

Lambo might be one of the most fascinating people you could meet. His wife Shannon is a super, top-notch person. On a basis of personality, some of my favorite student-athletes have been volleyball players. Go ask Doc about names of former players like Jordan Loney and Jackie Church, and 30 minutes later, you might get your next word in.

I went to my first one at the Heskett center when they were doing the renovation HLA/CKA. I was impressed with the flow of the game and the athleticism of the athletes. Bought season tickets the following year.

Most reports we have had on Shockernet from first timers have usually been that they enjoyed themselves very much. With a 2.5 hour drive to Wichita you may want to be selective on which Match you would attend. In the past the Shocks and the Lady Bears of Missouri State always seemed to have tremendous battles very often going 5 sets. The Shocks won't see the Lady Bears in the regular season this year.

After you have attended a few VB101 Dinners and listened to Lambo explain the game you realize there is a lot more to Volleyball at this level than the casual fan realizes. My guess is you will enjoy the teamwork required to play Volleyball well at this level. The dig, the pass, the set and the attack and then the defense. How do you handle out-of-system plays. Breakdown in any one of those areas and a team will struggle. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the athleticism and skill that you will see.

Rally scoring where a team scores on every serve has really made Volleyball more fan friendly. Previously, when you could only score on your serve the sets could take forever to complete. With rally scoring defense is rewarded. Nothing changes momentum like a great stuff block at the net and winning a long extended rallly with great defense can really get the crowd into it.

A 3 set sweep will take about 90 minutes and a competitive 5 set match could go 2.5 hours.

Check in to the Volleyball forum if you want some suggestions on which my be the best matches on the Shockers schedule this year. @WuShock16 said you might not be WOWED by it. That might be the case. But I think there is an equal possibility that you would be WOWED by it.

That photo doesn't make the seating area seem quite as dark as the other photos I have seen. Hopefully, the players won't need to wear sunglasses. Looking forward to the new experience. Won't be able to take the photo that I use for my Avatar anymore.

I hope we don't hear the excuse "Sorry coach I lost the lob in the lights"

Among other things they would be immediately nicknamed Manfred Mann.

Very true. I certainly hope that my comment wasn't interpreted as a dismissal of what Lambo and the girls do. I just know that I have taken people who maybe aren't as tied to WSU and/or volleyball who seemed to enjoy it but weren't blown away. It might have also had to do with the fact that the match maybe wasn't very good. I remember taking my wife's K-Stater family to a match against UNI that was built up as a big-time, pack-the-gym showdown. The girls fell on their faces, getting unceremoniously swept in the match. Bit of a buzzkill.

I'll just reiterate that if you can educate yourself a little bit of the team and on volleyball...and like '72 said, pick a competitive opponent to see, the chances of enjoying the experience go up significantly.

OTOH a UNI match would be one to mark on your calendar becasuse in most cases they are really competitive. And talk about good defense. UNI is about as good as it gets in that aspect of the game. They can really frustrate a team with their ability to keep balls in play. It will be interesting to see if WSU will end up in pre-season tournaments with UNI and MSU in the future. Volleyball at the top of the Valley was quite good.
