All I know is that Chris Jans recruited Cleanthony Early, left for a Head Coaching Gig, slapped a woman's behind, lost his Head coaching Gig, and now works for Gregg Marshall again.

What specifically has Chris Jans done/does that has made him Shockernet's most highly regarded, Gregg Marshall-era, assistant?
Because he's a damn good coach. He puts together an excellent scouting report. He's a solid, well-connected recruiter. On top of that, he's just a good dude...and I will also add that he outkicked his coverage with his delightful wonderful wife.

As for the Bowling Green incident, Chris had a REALLY bad night and has seemingly learned his lesson from it.

I'm glad he is back as a full assistant to help with next year's national title aspirations.

Marshall has often mentioned in the past some of the pregame and midgame adjustments Jans has come up with. Specifically, I remember before the Louisville Final Four game all the talk about the two guards for Louisville and how they full court pressured teams and caused turnovers. We had freshman Baker (who was the three) bring the ball up and start the offense, and the two quick guards for Louisville were not able to pressure and trap. I believe Marshall credited that to Jans.

The year Jans was at Bowling Green our in game adjustments seemed to be slower and less effective. Zones bit us in the ass bad that year.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

Planning and In-game adjustments, scouting, recruiting. Got it. These are things I expect of all on Gregg Marshall's staff. My followup question would be: From what you guys notice/know/believe, why is Chris Jans any better than Greg H. or Isaac Brown? The answer I am getting from you all is that you appreciate Chris Jans more so than them because Gregg Marshall has made it seem he appreciates/uses him more than others. Fair enough. I was only asking because I didn't know how I should care when these folks leave. For Greg H as an example - he received praise for his working with our guys on dribbling and ball handling. I am disappointed we won't be keeping him for the assumption that his contributions helped turn Fred VanVleet into a guy who could drive left(see Ohio State), to an NBA pro. That to me is a HUGE recruiting tool. None-the-less I really don't know how much stock to put into a assistance 'recruiting' abilities. I mean, it's a mess for sure. But if we supposedly dump X assistant coach altogether, how much would it really impact recruiting when we have Gregg Marshall, NCAA resume, NBA resume, blah blah blah that may take precedence in recruiting. Does Cleanthony Early come here without Chris Jans? Does Landry Shamet some here without Greg H? Anyway, word salad.

Well given that most contact with recruits start with an assistant, losing one who is good at establishing those relationships with high school kids, is a big loss. While HCGM's appeal is what may open a door, and eventually closes the deal, it's the assistant staff that keeps the door open in between. Also saying that all the resume stuff is what takes precedence is ignoring the fact at the level we recruit and WANT to recruit, we are competing against schools who can say the same, so what's the differentiator? It's the assistants who foster relationships with the kids and help them realize that we will make a home for them.

What I see in all this is we essentially lose an assistant coach errr special assistant coach. Unless Jans couldnt previously recruit we have one less dude out there hitting the streets getting us recruits etc. Were not hiring an assistant from the outside who has close relationships to highly valuable recruits.

Jans could not recruit in his previous role.
