I'll see if I can dig it up. It really wasn't that great, but I guess the simplicity was what made it attractive. There were some pretty good designs submitted by actual graphic designers.

The consulting group also recommended a third color in addition to the yellow and the black. I believe burgundy was their suggestion.

Whether Jim Schaus rejected this stuff instinctually or was convinced that it didn't fit, it's just another reason to be thankful for where we are today.

I am a farm girl, and I can assure you that the wheat in that logo (guy with the scythe) is completely disproportiinate to a human being.

What was weird about the whole deal is that they went with some generic, volume, out-of-area design group. I don't know a bunch about logo design, but I do know we had (at that time) and still have one of the best in the nation already here in Wichita with the Greteman Group.

Good observation, but it does attempt to provide a 'decent' explanation for "what is a Shocker?"; I would never advocate terminating good ole WuShock. :)

I haven't seen the work the firm in NYC did - but if they have good design and credentials in general - and then you see a logo or mark that is terrible - it says more about he brief and client direction than it does the agency. World-class agencies nip bad briefs in teh bud and tell bad clients to pound sand early.

TL-DR - The assignation of blame is generally the second to last part of the creative process, but it's hard to find the real culprit sometimes.

Wichita has a lot of very talented designers, motion graphic/editing/production houses. Frankly - there isn't enough business for all the local talent as is. I have hired/worked with some big time pros. Greteman and Gardner have done a lot of very good work for quite a while.

Feel free to move this, but can someone point me in the direction of the "logos that never were" for Wichita State? I'm picturing the one with the muscular field worker/farmer holding a scythe. I need to prove that it exists (or almost did).

I can't hate that new logo debacle too much. It prompted the Eagle to run a "think you can do better" WSU logo contest.

One of those was a pretty badass farmer with a scythe. Much better than the logo shown here. I don't remember that one at all.

The 1980 logo is great. Didn't we do an MTXE night with Tulsa a few years back? Would love to do something like that with Tulsa every year with retro uniforms and WSU can push some shirts with that logo.
