With all of the AAC speculation going around, I found myself pondering a sensitive subject. I live in Illinois and I notice that many of the casual fans refer to Wichita State as "Wichita". To me, it makes sense to drop the "State" from the name. "State" makes us sound small time. By using "University of Wichita", the name would fit with the other programs of the AAC. The University of Memphis, University of Cincinnati, University of Tulsa, all fit our profile but none use "state". I see this as a important branding issue for the university. Think of the merchandise sales, I believe this would help branding on a national level. Just throwing this out there.

This is a debate that has been discussed several times in the past. There are pros and cons for both WSU and U of W. I feel U of W does sound more professional, but WSU has built up some good brand reputation these past few years. I suppose a name change wouldn't hurt that, but maybe it would.
I myself would support the name change, especially if it was in conjunction with an AAC move. University of Memphis changed their name from Memphis State in 1994, so I suppose WSU could switch back.
Of course we could also go back to being priviate, religious, Fairmount College and wait for our Big East invite to come along ;)Last edited by Shock Top; March 9, 2017, 03:40 AM.The Assman

FWIW, Boo. I hate this idea. The Wichita State brand is rolling right now.
Stay the course.
Thousand points of light.“The rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying. But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'”

The NCAA is trying to go back to the 1950's with the return of four quarters (it didn't work then) so why not revert to the 1950's with University of Wichita, or WU, too?"I not sure that I've ever been around a more competitive player or young man than Fred VanVleet. I like to win more than 99.9% of the people in this world, but he may top me." -- Gregg Marshall 12/23/13 :peaceful:

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".
A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

Never forget this: if we drop "State" from our name, the morons from Missouri State will think it was their witty repartee that forced us to it. Don't even think of giving them the satisfaction
I don't care what people in Illinois, or Georgia, or California or Armenia call us.. We're Wichita State University--since 1964--because we're part of the state's regent system. Not that hard to understand outside the city limits of Springfield.
Changing the name is the worst idea since "The".Dominance is a state of mind.
