It's petty and spiteful, but I'm of the opinion that we fought, bled, and won that "State" in our name and every time we get to say it, a Beaker gets pissed off at us all over again.

I like pissing off Beakers. It's Wichita State.

I recently finally read Uncloistered Halls and I have to agree 100%. I'm glad it isn't some variation of University of Southern Kansas, like was suggested in the book..

They were a big fish in a small pond, and they did everything they could to keep the pond from getting bigger.

Yep we are a part of the state regents system. U of W or WU indicates a civic institution, which we are not. We are proudly a state university.

Actually, Sedgwick County residents pay a 1.5 mill property tax levy to Wichita State University.

The residents of Lawrence and Manhattan do not. We are still far more attached to our roots than many people realize.

Many of the college's and programs carry a mission statement to serve the community as a result of this tax, including such lauded programs as the Hugo Wall School of Public & Urban Affairs or the the Criminal Justice program to only name a few.

Of course the entire discussion is a moot point and I will not lose any sleep over rather we are WU or WSU.

I heard somewhere that all BOR schools in Kansas are required to have "state" in their name--of course with the exception of Our Glorious Exalted Flagship. Hence Emporia State, FH State, Pittsburg State, etc. Not sure if this is true.

But anyway, changing from 'Wichita State' at this point would just be silly.

Wichita State, Emporia State, Fort Hays State, Kansas State, ???Universiy of Kansas- State?? I don't believe KU or U of K had lost any State funding, have they?

So let me get this straight. The branding of Cincinnati, Memphis, Louisville, Houston, Pittsburgh etc is inferior to Wright St, Youngstown St, Cleveland State, Chicago State, or any other midwest city state school for that for that matter. I just want to make sure we are on the same page. There is a reason why we wore uniforms that's said "Shockers"'instead of ones that said"Wichita State" at the Final Four. It was about branding, nationally we are Wichita.

I think we all have been, or we wouldn't be on shockernet plotting. When WSU went through the name change, politics was a lot different in the state, especially with the KU alums calling all the shots. I believe we would easily have the political clout to change to University of Wichita. In fact doing so, will only likely piss off the hawkers even more.

Or be allowed to start the Dental School that was apparently approved, but considered by the university gifted the program by the board of regents, not a priority to be submitted during this budget year.

A generation ago you could tell someone's age if they referred to the school as "W.U." You hardly ever hear that moniker anymore. Today the tell tale is if you refer to the the Union correctly as the 'Rhatigan Center' or if you still say 'C.A.C' .
