I heard somewhere that all BOR schools in Kansas are required to have "state" in their name--of course with the exception of Our Glorious Exalted Flagship. Hence Emporia State, FH State, Pittsburg State, etc. Not sure if this is true.

I grew up a few hours outside of Wichita around a bunch of KU and KSU fans and I never heard anyone ask "why is it called Wichita State?".. Think about that for a second. The most die hard Big 12 fans for the most part don't think twice about why it's called Wichita State.

It is. To drop the "State" would require an act of the state legislature.

This is the right answer. You make that sort of move when you need to re-brand due lack of attention or to spark a new campaign or something. Our program is becoming a nationally known brand, at least in basketball, I don't see any reason to mess with it. Maybe something to revisit down the line, but right now I see columnists writing about Wichita State left and right or commentators debating how good Wichita State is, everyone is hearing Wichita State all the time, let's not confuse them.

I doubt they wouldn't be able to make the connection of the name change. Memphis was able do transition successful, I think Wichita would be just fine in that regard too.

Well, unless they get into the AAC somehow, they'll need a new "rival" anyway, and the shirts will just be collector's items.

In the tradition of Midwest universities (University of Kansas-KU, University of Oklahoma-OU, University of Colordo-CU, University of Missouri-MU, University of Tulsa, TU or just Tulsa etc) I would very much be in favor of University of Wichita, just Wichita, or WU for branding. It makes total sense for us to do a name change to better fit into our new conference and peer schools. Listen to a national broadcast and see how many times they just call us "Wichita." FYI, it is the majority of the time.

The rest of the nation follows conventional branding , University of Washington- UW, University of Kentucky-UK, Indiana Univerity, IU.

I suppose. That was over twenty years ago so I really have no idea if the transition was seamless or not. My point is it seems to be trying to find a solution without a problem. The WSU brand has some serious cache right now - why mess with that? Do you really think changing it to the University of Wichita will elevate it higher? Probably not and I wouldn't mess with it.

No. We would remain a Kansas Board of Regents School (state school), while changing the name. At least the way it is proposed here.

Yep we are a part of the state regents system. U of W or WU indicates a civic institution, which we are not. We are proudly a state university.

Period. Get over it if it makes you think small time. Ask Gregg about that ...
