As an outsider whose opinion on this matter is completely irrelevant, I don't think a name change to the university is necessary. The university's perception will rise and fall on its own academic merits. And the strength of your basketball team alone has brought well deserved brand recognition across the country for your athletic teams. While it's true that most people I know colloquially refer to you as Wichita, they also do the same thing with Boise State, etc. I suppose you could always go the route of Bowling Green State University who just drop the "State" in their athletic branding (not that anyone wants to follow BGSU's lead), or the State University of New York at Buffalo who simply go by "Buffalo" or "UB" (University at Buffalo) for branding purposes.

We've had similar debates on whether the University of Cincinnati should consider a name change. Many people unfamiliar with UC perceive us as being either a city commuter school or private school (a la University of Dayton, University of Tulsa, University of Denver, University of San Diego, etc) that often follow the "University of [City Name Here]" model when in fact we are one of the larger public universities in the nation.

Everyone does realize that dropping "State" means dropping the "WSU" brand/logo? We would then be UW to be confused with either Washington and Wisconsin instead of Wright State and Weber State (assuming anyone nationally gets confused by these two).

We're already confused with Washington State, and your two aforementioned schools.

I'd rather be associated/ confused with Washington and Wisconson rather than Wright State, Weber State and Washington State.

I'm all for it. I remember fondly my grandparents calling us simply, "Wichita," or ,"WU."

Personally, I like Wichita University--avoids all confusion, and allows our mascot to make much more sense.

Does W-U on WU Shock stand for Wichita University?

                            I've always assumed so.

If we DO go with a name change, Wichita University is what it should be, IMO.

Wichita State is a very well established brand name that when it comes to sports is recognized as good to great basketball and good to great baseball (although that shine has become a bit tarnished).

Back in the Wichita University days and even in the early Wichtia State years it wasn't uncommon, at least locally, to hear people refer to the University as Hillside High. I haven't heard that for a very long-time now. Thank goodness we have outgrown that perception.

If the poll taken a month ago is any indication of how Shocker Nation feels about this in general (and it may or may not be) then the great majority prefer we stay with Wichta State University.

Wichita State is a National Brand according to some:
