It's really quite the situation up there.. It's a college town, they have a billion dollar endowment and are in a power conference, yet the people running the show have absolutley no idea what is going on, regarding football. With all that going on ku fans try to pretend football doesn't exist and get angry everytime the football subject is raised. People can blame their basketball focus all they want, but I think that's merely the tip of the iceberg regarding their football problems.

All's wsu has to do to pass ku football is build a football stadium, bring in equipment, coaches and players. Put a team on the field of the new stadium and just like that ku is the distant 3rd best football team in the state.

There is a freeze on spending and hiring freezes have been discussed if not implemented. Simply put, the university cannot responsibly implement a football program at this time.

It is a 3% cut FFS. Some of the emotion-over-reason nincompoops employed at WSU need to discover math and get a hold of themselves.

Besides, approximately 70% of the Athletic Department's revenues are derived from private support having nothing to do with the parent University. The WSU AD is already the most self-supported AD in the MVC by a factor of two. The primary capital expenditures associated with a possible football resurrection would also be derived privately.

They are NOT going to turn their allegiance to WSU during the football season--especially as it would take years to have a team that could even compete.

How many Wichita non-ksu alumns actually drive to Manhattan to watch the wildcats play?
One of the issues that must be addressed if WSU does bring back football however, is the football stadium. Cessna stadium is a TERRIBLE design. The Shockers need an attractive venue in which people get excited about visiting.

I went to pretty much every Shocker football game between 1976 and 1986 and I don't ever remember crowds of less than 2 to 3,000. I agree with veritas on this one. The smallest crowds against crappy no-name teams were in the 6 to 10,000 range. The biggest crowds I remember were the Okie State game in 1978 that drew over 30K and the Kstate game in 1977 that drew just under 30K. There were others that drew between 25K and 30K but most games drew in the 15 to 25K range.

And, actually, a LOT of WSU area KSU-alums drive up to Manhattan. I've made that drive (and I'm a WSU grad) and have seen countless cars going back and forth on game day. The largest crowd I ever saw at a WSU game was against Tulsa in 1982, a few weeks after WSU beat KU 13-10. The Shockers lost the game vs. Tulsa...had maybe 25K at the game.

Do concrete numbers exist as to the alumni makeup of Sedgwick and its surrounding counties? I know Lutz's poll puts Wichita State at around 75% of people's #1 college but that's far from scientific.

Edit: Quick research shows 9k K-State alumni in Sedgwick County. KU Med Center has 1k alumni in Sedgwick County. Couldn't find numbers other than those but they probably exist somewhere.

Partly factual... Believe the 25k attendance for Tulsa, and can only believe the 1,000 attendance number if there is less than 30seconds in the game during horrible weather and the Shox getting trounced.
Additionally, I do believe "WSU area KSU alumns" drive up to Manhattan. I stated not that many Non-KSU alumns from Wichita drive up to Manhattan.

According to this article from December 1986 (from the Lawrence Journal World of all places) the average attendance in 1986 was around 9,700 which was the 2nd lowest since Cessna Stadium opened in 1969. I am assuming that was actual attendance since the article reports that 12,000 season tickets were sold mostly to corporations at reduced rates. I have not been able to find any other attendance figures for 1969 through 1986.

Too little income, too much outgo.

The Shocker's 1982 team coached by Willie Jeffries and lead by Prince McJunkins was an okay team although we really did not beat anyone of note.
