I'm excited about this team, just not National Championship level of excited. Would love to be proven wrong though.
In your opinion, what are the short-comings that hinder your excitement (if you can call being Top 10 excited 'hindered').

I've seen WSU look like a title contender in recent years. This year's team is good, but it just feels like they are missing something. I think the 3 headed monster at the 5 spot was better than WSU's bigs this year. I also think Cle was a difference maker being such a versatile player who could take over a game. Cotton was a shutdown defender. You can never have too many of those. This year's Freshman and Sophomore classes are good, and have potential to be great, but I don't currently feel like they are ready to fully fill the voids from the last few graduating classes. This year's team relies on Baker and VanVleet too heavily. I look back at that Kentucky game 2 years ago and think... man... Fred, Ron, Tekele, Cle, and Darius... with Kadeem, Chadrack, and Wessel on the bench... THAT was a national title contender. Goodness I wish Fred's buzzer beater would have dropped!

The 10th best team in the country can win a title, but the odds aren't great. 17 of the last 25 national champions were 1 seeds. 20 of the last 25 were 1s or 2s. WSU is in the range where they could get hot and do it, but I don't feel myself expecting it to happen the way I did in 2014 at 35-0.

Yup. Win this day. Think about tomorrow tomorrow.

Rather impressive research on your part. Difference is that was in regards to KenPom, RPI, Rankings. This was on a thread specifically ASKING what this team could be in the FUTURE if they shot a certain percentage. But if you want to take the time to search out posts like that, more power to you. My bad.

No research on my part. I recalled your post from the discussion of 2016 Bracketology (future) and found the irony of your post of today to be humorous. That is all and carry on.

I see what you're saying. All about context man. At least it was in my mind. Apparently it didn't come across that way, at least not to your mind. As I said, my bad.

JH4P I agree with your posting as limited to the Shockers shooting 3PT's.

However, IMO if the Frosh and Sophomores continue to mature by the end of the regular season this team will be every bit as good a team as the FF Shocker team. Should that maturation occur, I will be totally excited about a National Championship possibility for the Shockers, regardless of the NCAA Committee's seeding assignment.

My concern lies in our post size and depth. It's good enough to be a good team but not sure it's enough to be a great team.

This is a special year regards the quality of post play; the burger post boys are not starting at some schools (KU and Maryland) and even Ben Simmons at LSU is not that dominant on a game by game basis. SM is improving every game and is now coupled with AG; Shocker post play this year has been more than capable against quality post players (Utah and EU).

Have you identified a team with post play that will preclude the Shockers from winning?

Where's that 40% shooting tonight? 1-9 from the arc right now.

While I absolutely agree with you that 35-1 beats this team, that doesn't necessarily mean that WSU couldn't win the title this year. That team was a title contender. Further, this year, there are no dominate teams so one would argue it is less likely than the 68% chance a 1 seed wins the title. Additionally, one advantage of the 7-10 seed is that the road opens up wide if you can knock off the 1 or the 2. Get to the Final 4 and anything can happen.

However, I do currently share your skepticism. We are a little too inconsistent in the post, our free throw shooting and the amount we get to the line compared to our opponents, and our heavy reliance on the perimeter make me tenative to get hopeful. If you have the best back court in the country, there is no doubt you have a shot to win the title. Whether you believe we do could be argued, but it is certainly one of the best, especially with the increased production by Connor.

I also think one of the best indicators whether you have a title contender is Kenpom's Offensive/Defensive efficiency statistics. If you aren't top 15 at least in both, you likely are not a title contender. Currently we are not.

                                Does 58% work for ya?

Let's wait until the entire game is played out before we open up our mouth.
