Can anyone clarify that one? Please and thank you.
I believe if the player is dribbling the ball, then there is no 5-second count. If they are just holding the ball, then the 5-second count still happens.

That's not quite right, but I will probably also be mistaken. I think it's if you dribble the ball and then pick it up, only then can you get a 5 second.

I simply found this aspect of his game a bit uncharacteristic.
He performed similarly in the Nevada game as well. It appearded to me in both games, he pushed the envelope in the second half. Part of it might be Marshall called Ron's number knowing he was silent in the scoring column in both first halves. The great thing about Ron is he is so versitile and is as good of a two-way player as there is in college basketball.

I only listened to part of the game on the radio and caught the entire post game radio show and interview with Ron... no mention of him passing up numerous open looks. I'll defer to someone that eyeballed the game. I have to think his comments about "cutting off the head of the snake" was his primary focus until it was 'Ron Time' down the stretch.

Oops, looks like @SHOXMVC: already covered it.

I didn't see him passing up shots during the game. I was at the far end for the first half so I may have missed some opportunities.

              • Does anybody know why HCGM doesn't let CF run the point? I would have guessed that he would be the primary back up for Fred. I think TT and RB would both prosper at the two.

I'm honestly not sure. A quick google search doesn't make it much clearer.
                  • Eliminating the five-second closely guarded rule while dribbling the ball.
The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Monday approved a package of proposals and areas of focus for officials in men’s basketball to improve the pace of play, better balance offense with defense and reduce the physicality in the sport. The NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee made similar recommendations before the 2013-14 season, and it felt the changes improved the game. But after gaining some positive traction, the balance between offense and defense again tilted toward the defense last season.

My reading of the rules is that the official shall visibly signal the count when the player is not dribbling. I don't see the refs doing that. In any event, the 5-second count has not been eliminated except for when the player is dribbling.

                      • Overall I thought the Shocks had a solid game, turnovers weren't a problem, even though Drake isn't a stellar defensive team. I thought our inside game with Shaq and Anton was solid, Shaq seems to be gaining confidence by the game. Anton seems to be getting his game back together since the Orlando trip. Our guard play is what drives thiis team and they didn't disappoint, Fred started out hot in the first half and Ron had a great second half. Zach Brown had a very solid game and he too seems to be finding his grove. All in all, this was a good start to defending our Crown and we still haven't reached our full potential... The inside game, which was our ? mark seems to becoming more dependable, even though it still needs to improve, I'm more confident about our frontcourt. Three of our next four are road games. We will learn alot about the Shocks over the next week.

                        • Was good to see Conner hit a few deep ones at home. Going to be fun watching him with Fred and Ron once he plays to his full potential and has a few more games under his belt...

Seeing Shaq bust his ass on both ends while maintaining control was great!

Shaq did a great job closing out on shooters. Besides the few blocks he had, he altered several more causing bad misses or airballs. Great effort by Shaq

I was seated at the student end, and saw several passed up shots. To the extent there were a few collective groans in my section at the passive play by Ron, sometimes followed by forced shots at the end of the clock. I don't mean to be overly critical of the guy, he's an absolute stud, wouldn't trade him for anyone. I've just never seen him exhibit that level of offensive tentativeness.
