Bingo. There's no excuse for not knowing how to shot fake at the college level. If you're not coached how to do it, it's easy enough to learn on your own.

Name a college coach that HASN'T wanted to go on a rant like that and I'll say you're crazy. I'm pretty sure every coach has been to that point eventually. I know I have. It's frustrating to watch ineptitude at any level, especially when you know your players should have picked things up already

        • Late thoughts on the players:

Fred - 20/20 hindsight he should not have played. I was on an airplane from Chicago Friday with a family friend of Fred's. She comes down a couple of times a year to watch him play. I felt bad that she didn't get to see more.

Ron - played well. Every shot he took looked great. They did not drop at the rate they should have based on the looks he got and how well they looked.

          Evan - quiet game. Fred/Landry/Ron is a better 1/2/3 than Fred/Ron/Evan

Rashard - he has upped his offensive skill to another level! His explosiveness is now controlled. He needs to recognize that he is better than his opponent and exploit that.

Anton - crazy skilled on the offensive end! Borderline unstoppable. He makes this team so much better. Still working on his defense on the perimeter. I think he spends most of his time at the 5. Someone mentioned Eric pushing Shaq. I think Anton might be pushing him too.

Ty - I liked what I saw. He looks like a talented freshman PG. He can really score. Needs to work on the other aspects of his game, but damn!

Landry - Wow! This kid is the best freshman Marshall has had at WSU by a mile. He's a combination of the best parts of Toure Murry and David Kyles. I'd really like to see him run the point some.

Zach Brown - not his best game, but not bad either. The drive and dunk on the break was fantastic. Similar to Kelly and Shaq, he is making consistent strides.

Eric - what a fantastic combination of size, athleticism, skill, and energy! He looks awkward at times, but he "gets" effort. I expect his season to be a roller coaster ride.

Shaq - good effort! He was hedging on screens like a MAN! Needs FVV to get him the ball.

JRS - Better PG than what started for the Shockers in most of Randy Smithson's years

Zach Bush - hard not to like! Another walk-on that doesn't look lost.

Markis - game moved a touch to fast for him. He did all the right things except finish. It will be fun to watch him develop. Minutes will be tough to come by.

Bush - he's okay at altering shots and getting rebounds.

              Darrlyn Willis.

Willis/Morris/Nurger (no particular order) at the 5

              Kelly/Hamilton at the 4

              Brown/McDuffie at the 3

              Shamet/Allen at the 2

              Taylor/Smith at the 1

Keyser will learn the 2 or 3. Frankamp is my pick to start at the 1, but might be a 2. We are pretty long at the 2-4.

While I haven't seen Willis play yet, it sounds like he is a rebounding monster and a great shot blocker who has a nice shot with a 75% free throw stroke. It appears that Willis can play the 4 or5. I may be wrong but it may end up that Kelly has the lowest ceiling of the other candidates for the 4 and 5 and while he played the 5 a couple of times last year, Kelly is less a 5 than the other candidates. It's too soon to know for sure but he may be searching for playing time more than the others in the future.

Kelly is the current starting 4. IMO, he will retain that position for the next two years.

                  • If Saturday is any indication of how games will be called going forward, and it may or may not be, then a starting 5 becomes much less important than your 12-man rotation.

                    • I usually agree with you but in this case, maybe not. You may be right but two years only gets to his Junior year. I can't forsee everything but I think that there may be evidence that you aren't. Kelly isn't a jumping machine, and is only 6'7. Hamilton doesn't have any idea how good he can be at this time. He is 6'8 or 6'9 and 235 and may get even bigger. He has quickness and motor in the tank that he doesn't even know he has. He is going to be a rebounding monster and is very good at the front of the full court press. Nurger, if he becomes bigger and stronger I think has a very high ceiling and he is 6'10. He may get to 245 or more before he is done. He has the frame for it. Willis is 6-9' and averages 4 blocks a game. He has been described as a rebounding monster and has a nice shooting touch too. Morris hasn't found his mgotor yet but he could become a monster too before he's done. 6'7 and 260 lbs. is a great big man and he is extremely athletic for his size

One last addition. Kelly has definitely improved since last year and he is a nice player. I just wonder if the other four players we are talking about don't have very high ceilings.

This is true as long as you have a player who can guard a 7 footer on the other team and block up the middle with shot blocking skills, etc. and hold their own rebounding.

Two years meaning junior and senior. This year I expect he will start most games but not necessarily all. Kelly IS a jumping machine! Did you forget the 10 or so rebound put back dunks he had last year? He's also a ball getter, quick and skilled. Looking at it from the other side, his handles are okay for a PF. Not good enough for SF. He is undersized at 6-6+. His competition for minutes will be bigger. He doesn't have the touch that Nurger has nor the motor that Eric has. He's not the raw athlete that Willis is, nor does he have the strength of Shaq or guard skills of Brown or McDuffie. He's still very good in each of those categories and I expect he will continue to work on tightening his handles.

If you don't think Kelly is a jumping machine, you must not have been at shocker madness.

Oh man I forgot about those in my general anger about the officiating.

                              Shaq's hedges were AWESOME.
