  • Something difficult to wrap your head around......one of, if not the best player in the country played 3 relatively meaningless minutes and one of the most talented offensive players on the team played zero (I think most of us can agree now that offense, shooting and FT shooting are going to play a sizable role in winning and losing this season and Frankamp is outstanding in those categories).

And yet they won going away by 20+ points against a decent team. It is a GREAT day!

    • The one thing that impressed me about Charleston Southern is that they played super hard the entire game and their defenses was pretty good. They reminded me of us (imagine that with Radebaugh and Marshall's relationship). We didn't shoot the 3 very well and nothing seemed to come easy in our offense. Fortunately, we dominated the boards and played hard too.

      • Watching the replay on Cox 22. Quickly coming to the conclusion that there was a lot of poor officiating involved with th 66 fouls. Some of this stuff should not have been called even with the new guidelines.
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

        • How is Eric Hamilton like Barry Hinson's wife?

I'm not completely sure, but I'm fairly certain that Barry Hinson's wife... his WIFE...would shot fake AT LEAST one time.

Well, that one took all of 4 minutes for the right answer. On the replay (on Cox as I posted this), there was a pass to Hamilton under the basket. Hamilton made a shot fake, and then just laid the ball in. That's when I thought of Barry's famous rant.

The good part starts around 2:30

                  2. He and Gregg wanted to win. Fred was out there mostly because Fred demanded to be out there. But I'm with you.

                  3. I'm not sure I'd say great, but it was a damned fine start.

                  4. Eh...I loved his motor. A poor matchup early in a foul plagued game doesn't bother me. I like what he'll bring against Duke in the round of 8.

                  5. Ronnie Ryer? You and I are getting old. He's the quickest kid I remember.

                  6. Never ignore @ShockRef: or for that matter, his better half @RefChick:.

                  7. Yes, but he's so talented, he may just be helpful late in the season.

                  8. No kidding.

                  9. Nah....it just seemed like it. He's going to be a load at both ends of the court. Very smart.

                  10. Indeed. Some of us have to work though! ;)
                  Doc,
#6 generated significant laughter from RefChick. Enough that she may even buy you a beverage in Fla.

                  That is all.
Above all, make the right call.

This is no doubt true, but the NCAA still bears responsibility for this. To open the season, they sent a clear message to officials that they would be punished for not calling games tight, which makes it natural for officials to have a quick whistle if they think they will face repercussions for not calling fouls. If games were going to be poorly officiated (and there always will be many of those games), under the current incentives for officials, they will be poorly officiated in precisely this manner.

Funny thing is...there were a lot of fouls that did NOT get called as well.

Without going back and looking for them, I thought 2 of Grady's 3 fouls were hair-pullers. Reaching over the back of an opponent who had position on rebounds.

I think you under value how poorly coached some of those boys were before Hinson and how frustrated he was with their work ethic.

Now I remember playing softball 40 years ago and our coach telling the outfielder, "Never throw the ball home after dark." ...................our catcher simply could not see well enough to catch the ball. Perhaps that lob pass woulda worked with Grady.
That's the thing about turnover stats, unless one was watching the game, one is never sure what caused the turnover. And this play is a case in point. Even the announcers pointed out that BW was late releasing his man. I'm pretty sure TTII will keep the TOs to a minimum and I'm not at all troubled by the one TO he had in this game.
