Going into those games, both UConn and VCU were right on WSU's tail as far as NCAA seeding. As @ShockdaWorld pointed out, Indiana and Cal had good nights, so overall, it was just an average night for WSU. Most predictions I'm seeing have WSU as a 7 or 8 seed currently.
Same, SI had WSU as a 9 in the south against Cal to start, then Iowa as the #1 in the South.

True regarding polls. My concern would be regarding seeding. Cal is definitely right in WSU's neighborhood at the moment. Teams like them losing will help reduce the chance that WSU gets a poor seed.

That ship has sailed. Cal will end up seeded higher(better?) than WSU unless they go below .500 the remainder of the season.

        • A loss by Cal last night would have been preferable, and I don't necessarily disagree @Cdizzle that Cal will likely get a better seed than WSU if they go 4-3. However, 3-4 in their remaining 7 is very possible. Cal and WSU are still neck and neck, and I see no reason to give up hope that WSU can finish ahead on the final S-Curve.

Here is Cal's KenPom page with estimated chances of winning listed next to each upcoming game.

          • Does it really matter that much if we cheer for comparable teams to pass us or get passed by us? As long as we don't end up on the 8/9 line it's fine, right?

Edit: After some actual research it does appear 7 seeds win at a significantly higher rate that 10 seeds. For some reason I was thinking the percentages were negligible.
