No, they play in conferences that have legit respect.

I hate the MVC when it comes to entertainment value. I want the games to be a challenge and I love going to a game like the old CU Blackouts

So I try to find a ray of sunshine - the MVC's Ray: WSU should go to the tournament every year that they play in a league this bad. Going to the tournament is the most important action a team can do to build national respect. It becomes a nice echo chamber.

    • Well I can agree with you on one thing, I hate the disgusting, miserable, pathetic conference called the Missouri Valley.

Today, as a Shocker team with very few quality wins is earning tons of national respect and prepares to become the highest ranked 5 loss team in the country, these same people are telling me to simmer down because this is obviously no big deal and is simply to be expected.

        Absolutely bizarre.

Huh? WSU is ranked ahead of Duke this week. I don't understand.

        • Another quality loss for KU last night. If losing by 19 to OSU kept them at 3/4 in the polls, this should move them back up to 2/3 right?

Depends on the poll. In the AP, we are 22 and Duke is 24. In the coach's we are 25 and Duke is 20.

Well Vitale did his part. He made sure to rank Duke at 20 and leave WSU unranked.

                  • KU was #3 in the AP poll last week and fell to #4 this week. Of the 9 teams right behind KU last week, Texas A&M was the only team to go undefeated last week and not pass KU in this week's poll. Following 2 mediocre wins, A&M went from 504 points behind KU last week to a mere 37 points behind this week.

KU had the perfect storm to help keep their high ranking after the OSU loss. If KU loses to Kentucky this weekend, you will see the bottom fall out from their ranking. If they win and go 1-1 on the week against two top 25 opponents, I think KU will drop a bit, but it will be more dependent on what other teams around them do this week.

Just for full disclosure, I'd put KU around 10-12 on my personal ballot if I was doing rankings as of today. Lose to Kentucky, at home, and I'd drop them to around 16-18.

                      True.

I should have been more clear. Most of the back and forth over the past few pages has been in regards to the AP poll. It is almost unanimous here that the coaches poll is worthless and should be ignored.

WSU is the highest ranked 5 loss team in the country according to the AP poll. Considering the lack of quality wins, I think that is pretty cool to see WSU getting that kind of respect.

That's hilarious. Someone needs to buy some billboard space in Lawrence or JoCo ad post this up for all the KU airheads to see.

Membership in the Valley isn't exactly a plus these days, but it isn't clear that the MVC is consistently weaker than the WCC is, and the league they play in hasn't hurt Gonzaga's reputation. Until there's a change, if there is one down the line somewhere, WSU just needs to keep dominating its league the way the Zags command theirs. Do that, schedule well, and get some quality wins instead of just quality losses (as they would have done this year had FVV been healthy), and everything will be fine.

It's possible for a team to establish itself as an at-large fixture even if it plays in a second-tier league. WSU has done it and has the resources and coach to stay there. Even SIU did it in the Valley a decade ago; they just didn't have the resources to maintain that status once they achieved it, partly because their resources didn't enable them to keep the right coach. (Football can be a big drain, even if it isn't played at a level that can make it an asset.)

                            • WSU received a 1 seed in a year where the conference was ranked 11th overall and the 2nd place team in the conference was a 1-and-done in the NIT. I would love to see the Shox play in a better league, but it is more about entertainment value of good opponents than it is about the MVC currently holding them back.

It took an undefeated season to get a 1 seed.

1 loss to a Valley school would have dropped them 2, maybe 3 seed lines.
