  • Some notable variances between the best subjective human poll, and arguably the most respected quantitative analytic:

    South Carolina - AP #24, Kenpom #41 (SOS #218)
    Butler - AP #18, Kenpom #36 (SOS #114)
    Providence - AP #16, Kenpom #45 (SOS #135)

Wichita State - AP Unranked, Kenpom #23 (SOS #45)

    • To piggyback off @SHOCKvalue:, KenPom ranks WSU higher than 7 of the 27 teams currently ahead in the polls.

On the flip side, there are only five 4-loss teams in the top 25, and none with 5 or more, so WSU's 5 losses is significant for mid-January.

If WSU keeps winning, the loss disparity is going to rapidly shrink now that the BCS teams are in conference play. With a win at UNI on Wednesday, I predict the Shox re-enter the AP top 25 next Monday.

Voters supporting us are primarily east coast (Maryland, Michigan, NYC-2, West
Virginia, Connecticut,) plus Kentucky and Indiana (basketball hotbeds) and Mew Mexico, California and Petro in Kansas City.

            • Funny how one game can make such a difference, even at this point in the season's rankings. If we would have won at Seton Hall, we probably would have popped back into the rankings within a week or two after that, and would probably be hanging around #20 or so right now. I agree with the sentiment that even if we were to win out through the Valley tournament, we would not crack the top 10 in the rankings. If we were to win out through STL, my totally unscientific gut feeling is a 5 or 6 seed at best, unless a lot of teams above us now collapse in the next six weeks. Which seeing how this year is going is certainly possible.

Duke is still #1 in Dickie V's heart.

Well #15th according to his AP ballot .. but that's basically saying the same thing after 3 losses in a row.

Didn't he call that game from their arena last night? Cause I think I could rattle off 60-70 teams I'm pretty confident would beat Duke on a neutral court right now.

They are not 'hot garbage.' But they aren't really a very good team, much less a Top 25 team.

                            • I hate to say it, even considering the numbers with KenPom and SOS, but WSU is getting HUGE respect. #28 in the polls and no one with the same or more losses ahead of them.

Considering the strength of the MVC and past season pollsters, WSU is now a proven program with staying power. I remember when past season where WSU wouldn't even sniff votes with the current record we have.

Next week I expect WSU to be back in the polls (barring a miracle of epic proportions for Bradley on Saturday). Good times.

                              • Sneak peak for next week's ballots: Scott Wolf, Bret Strelow, Jerry Carino, Fletcher Mackel, and John Feinstein add us to their ballots. Doug Haller and Randy Rosetta leave us unranked.

I don't want to reveal all of them and ruin the suspense on Monday.
