Fair point, hook, but teams always look worse defensively when the other guys have a hot night. Obviously there's often a correlation between those occurrences, but sometimes players also just hit shots (like Jerian Grant's tough three at the shot clock buzzer). So although the Chickenhawk defense wasn't imposing against Evan Wessel and the Shocks, it probably wasn't as bad as it looked to Doc; and similarly, WSU probably wasn't quite as bad against ND as some of those tough shots made it look when they went in.

Out of curiosity what is he adjusting for? I thought the efficiency in defensive efficiency implied that pace was already taken into consideration.

I ask that only because on the website I check (because it's free) WSU was #9 last year while KU was #66.

Was the tongue in cheek not apparent? Relax.

EDIT: Also adjusted for home court and more weight is given to recent games.
              78-65

              shows how much he knows.

uni was also defensively better than ku.

Maybe extra weight is given with regard to the fanbase. KU fans are extremely defensive. Possibly the most defensive fanbase in the country. I hate to say it but they absolutely own us in that category (fanbase defensiveness). That could easily explain why the team's defensive efficiency seems higher than what you would expect based on watching the team.

Headed for the ESPN SportsCenter "Posts of the Day," Dave -- fanbase defensiveness. Very nice.

I've said it before, but KU's defensive numbers must be understood in context of their conference. Almost every team in the Big 12 (with the possible exception of Iowa State in recent years), play a lot of one on one basketball since they rely on freshmen and can't depend on instituting more complicated stuff. KU does in fact do a pretty good job of defending against that style offense, in particular applying ball pressure that causes turnovers against players that haven't learned effective ball movement.

The problem, as we have seen time and time again in the NCAAs, is that once KU faces good teams (even ones with less raw talent than the freshmen laden B12 teams) that run offenses that regularly make the extra pass and know how to handle perimeter pressure, their entire gameplan falls apart.

Schools like KU are the teams the want a shorter and shorter shot clock to cut down on the 'extra'l pass

The shorter the shot clock, the more raw talent predominates over talent combined with technique.

@kenpomeroy: Of anyone who has coached since 2002, Self's teams have the best average AdjDE.

But yeah, KU sucks at defense.

I think the question is what exactly AdjDE is adjusted for. I have the same question.
