Combine the impact of the NBA rookie salary cap with the tremendous amount of NCAA MBB TV inventory required with the level that Marshall has driven the program and the result is that it is a much better job than it has ever been in history.
The honest truth is that regardless of what happens the best coach WSU could possibly have over the next 5 years in Gregg Marshall. Any other result is not ideal.
Having said that, it is always advisable to be prepared for every scenario and hope most never come to fruition.
The other thread has been trashed and taken off track. My plea is that those not interested in constructive discussion about contingency plans please close this thread and spend your time elsewhere. Hopefully we can keep this on point.
My top candidates for replacement should it come to that:
1) Archie Miller: coached for base of $335,000 in 2013-14. Received two extensions and raises since but likely still far south of the money WSU could pay if necessary, Great pedigree, built team with players from multiple sources including maybe the highest level of rated HS players for a mid major the last couple of years. Has connections to Canadian HS pipeline...builds teams with versatile athletes effective at both ends of the court
1a) Dan Hurley: Guessing his buyout and extension just went up considerably, but was paid maybe 40% of Gregg Marshall for 14-15...Solid both offensively and defensively with defense being a slight major (similar to Marshall), fast paced style of play, forcing the opponent into bad shots and turnovers...the deeper you dig, the more obvious that this is the superior Hurley at this point in their careers. You don't need to dig very deep to see what he did at Wagner and Rhode Island is ridiculous based on what he was given. Dude is a flat stud.
I have more work to do to start to clearly delineate within the next group. All are excellent candidates with nice proven track record and solid upside. Prioritizing within for me would likely be dependent on interviews.
Steve Prohm
Michael White
Chris Mooney
LeVelle Moton
Small separation due solely on small sample size of proven results available
Bobby Hurley
Brad Underwood
Two weeks ago I would have also had Ben Howland on a list of candidates you have to at least talk to, but I'm at peace with that option being taken off the table given the candidates I think we can land.
Tommy Amaker is a more tenured option I might kick the tires on as I feel he has really grown as a coach over the years.
Not relevant at this time, but I think Bradley hit a home run for them as I had Wardle on my list to track and watch his teams over the next couple of years as a potential future candidate for WSU.
I highly doubt you need to go beyond this group to find the BEST candidate for WSU, but would love to hear others thoughts.
I know that many will want to simply hit the easy button and bring Jans back. I am a fan of Jans, but there is way too much to be proven by him at this point in his development. In fact, I would bet that same subset of fans thought it was stupid to not hire Boyle in 2007...solid hire, but not the best available hire as we all now know.
